I dreamt of making it to Fiordland in New Zealands South Island for many years. Finally setting my tripod up to frame up Mitre Peak was a special moment. This rugged region is absolutely stunning. A walk upon the volcanic black sand shores of Kare Kare will leave you deep in lament. Kare Kare translated as rolling thunder is the site of a brutal massacre that took place in 1820. The Iwi of the region Te Kawerau a Maki who had lived peacefully here for around 700 years were attacked by Enemy Iwi with muskets from above. The massacre ended Maori settlement in the area. It wasn’t until 1993 that the Te Kawerau a Maki returned to claim their status as Manua Whenua. 😧 The Waitakere Ranges with their western margins at Karekare were formed millions of years ago during a sustained outburst of volcanic activity in the Tertiary period. Landforms have a backbone of andesitic lava overlain by ash and other volcanic debris. What is an image without the story of the adventure to capture it? This shot was captured at about 10am after the guests had had their breakfast and were ready for the morning hike. I strapped the drone onto my back and we sped away from the mothership #motoryachtparadise. We pulled into the bay that you can just see at the bottom of the image (see if you can spot the tinny) We then climbed the limestone mountain in the foreground. It was a pretty vertical climb with no smooth flat spots to launch the drone at the top. Somehow I managed to launch it by hand while the others enjoyed the view.
