Things have been really hard the last year or so. It started with the murder of my best friend and her son the day after I totaled my boyfriend’s car in 2015. Then I had to drop some of my classes in school and after that things just went on a downward spiral. We’ve lost jobs, my van was repo’d after a surprise baby who’s pregnancy and birth nearly killed me (almost bled to death 12 weeks postpartum and had a emergency D&C), we had to move across town to be close to my college since we only have my boyfriend’s car and he needs that to put in 10-12 hour days just to try to keep the roof over our heads. Which hasn’t been going well. We haven’t been able to keep up with our bills. I’ve maxed my student loans out trying to help, and now I’m not going to have enough to finish school. I can’t afford to buy a second vehicle to help work a second job, or to get my ass to clinicals at college/the hospital to finish my degree so i can start getting paid the 56k-60k as an RN that would help pull us out of this black hole we are in. As it is we are on food stamps, wic, i wash our clothes in the bath tub when we can’t afford the laundry mat, i cloth diaper, i cook smart, and we have no luxuries. I don’t have a cell phone bill, i use the wifi, which is sometimes dangerous because when i leave the house with the kids, i have no cell service unless i find a mcdonalds or walmart that has wifi. We don’t have cable. we don’t have anything extra or expensive. We don’t go out. we don’t spend money on ANYTHING.  Everytime we get close to getting back on our feet, something happens and knocks us back down. A sick family member, a car breaks down, an emergency happens, something. We just need a break. We have no family or friends who can help us. This is my last resort. I don’t want to post it on facebook because we have a few judgy family members, and a few people we don’t want to worry (like my teenage daughter back home). But I’ve seen education funds on youcaring for tuition and cars and i’m hoping that someone will want to help. If I can just get through RN school, I can help take the burden off my boyfriend, and help get us back on our feet. A second car would help us do that.

I was at Disneyland yesterday and when I walked into the Princess Fantasy Faire I welled up with tears as I witnessed a magical moment with the newest princess Elena of Avalor speaking in full Spanish to a small princess visiting from Latin America.

I remember being teased relentlessly throughout my childhood and my teenage life where people would say that because of my skin I’ll never be beautiful enough, they would even recommend skin bleaching products. So as a child I quickly realised that as a dark skinned girl I was not considered beautiful enough… At that time I didn’t know that it was the negativity from the people around me that was causing me to hate my skin and myself for that matter. I remember a time during school photos where a girl shouted “she’s too dark! You won’t see anything on her ID but her teeth!”, of course everyone laughed it out… And so did I…. Because I didn’t want to make it seem like I was offended… Their feelings felt more important than mine… After all growing up I was always reminded of how unlikely I was of ever being beautiful or finding someone that found my darkness beautiful….. As a 19 year old today I sit here and say “I never gave in to skin bleaching”, “I was constantly reminded of how ugly I was but that only made me love myself even more….. I began considering myself as someone different, someone beautiful and out of the ordinary.” Your skin no matter how dark it is that when you smile you can only see the glow of your teeth is worthy of love, your skin is that of a goddess and you should never feel anything about your skin but self love. I write this to all of the people that have gone through similar and worse, you don’t need to learn to Love your skin, the love is already there… You just gotta unleash it.

What first seemed to be an abscess under her chin, and then was assumed to be a snake bite, turned out to be a secondary infection in connection to cancer. Kate had been unresponsive to the meds and treatment she was receiving. Yesterday she was sedated to take a closer look. We found a large tumor on her neck and the evidence of malignant melanoma. The decision was made to euthanize her to end her suffering. During her post-mortem exam, we found her lungs ravaged with cancer. While she was not showing signs of any respiratory distress before, it would not have been long until it would have killed her. This is a very sad time for us, especially since we have lost so many cats to cancer – melanoma specifically. It has caused us to raise many questions about why. As we have looked back over our losses, it has become clear that the cats that have been diagnosed with melanomas have all been related in some way. Our research partner, Dr. Brian Davis from the NIH, has been interested in this commonality and genetic connection and that is why every time we experience a loss like that we send him valuable genetic information to continue his research on cancer. The cats here are interesting to study in relation to why melanoma occurs and why it is more prevalent in certain bloodlines. Unlike with humans, there are so few factors that may be contributing to cancer – just their diet (which is always meat), their water source, their stable and fairly unpolluted environment, the sun and of course, their DNA. They don’t use cellphones, they don’t eat produce treated with insecticides, they don’t drink alcohol or smoke, etc. It is so important that we work to unlock the secrets of cancer. Loss is painful, and Kate will be missed and will always be loved, but she will follow others that will have their passing hopefully play a part in discovering ways to beat a vicious and unfair disease. I had the best night last night celebrating my birthday with my best friend, my boyfriend, the man who makes my dreams come true and my life complete.
