Death of a Doll by Hilda Lawrence (1947)
Tumblr media
A very interesting and strange blend of genuinely creepy suspense and funny, quirky cozy. Death of a Doll is a murder mystery set in a lodging house for young women, and features some actually scary moments along with four—count 'em, four!—detectives. It's "A Mark East mystery" but our man Mark and his much duller police buddy Foy are somewhat overshadowed by the elderly sleuths Beulah and Bessy, who tag along and add some unexpected hilarity. I'm a sucker for settings that involve dormitories, boarding houses, or hostels, so this one pulled me in.
VIBES: The Girls of Slender Means + Gaudy Night + Picnic at Hanging Rock
CW: As with all old books by white people, expect some problematic content in regards to race, class, and disability representation.
