High school theater is so much fun because literally everyone is unstable as shit, pretty much no one has their schoolwork fully up to date, we’re all exhausted, and there’s usually huge amounts of relationship tattering drama but during performance nights we drop all of that off and if asked, we would all still die for each other. The Master typically assumes themselves to be a solid anchor of reality, they can’t help but indulge in owing to inner desires. Sacha’s Master in particular, inhabits other roles in order to assert positions of authority and control, hence he feels so threatened by TTC as it opposes his ability to act within their own free will. They want complete assurance to rely on the Doctor to appropriate their desire for self affirmation, while also wanting them to be a subject that willing chooses to murder at their behest.

But then thought of the Doctor being a free subject terrifies them, so he attempts to deny their right to choose. The Master wants them to know not what has been lost, but what has been given, only his truth. They reveal Gallifrey's past sins only once he's destroyed it. Leaving himself as the proprietor of all knowledge and robbing the Doctor of any redemptive closure.

Acknowledging the Doctor as someone who exists outside of their narrow perception is to admit vulnerability. Suddenly the burden of responsibility seems less daunting and easier to ignore. He shrouds himself in abstractions of legacy. He needs the mythology of the individual.

So it feels very appropriate that the Master paraphrases a quote from Ozymandias in relation to him destroying Gallifrey

"Look upon my work Doctor and despair"

the lesson of discarded legacies, which ofc he completely misappropriates as the focal point of his entire existence, only seeing the superficial in a literal sense. Broken pieces of a likeness.

Both Ozymandias and the Master's retelling of TTC are told to us by an author who gains the information from an external presence, who was interpreting the work of an artist time forgot. But as time goes on their true value is revealed, a long forgotten history and a kingdom in ruins.
