Pet hoarders - Control the number of animals in a home

In an attempt to rescue homeless animals, some people get inundated with them instead. They are what we call the hoarders. I Wildlife Rescue and I foster cats and kittens. As part of an organization that rescues homeless animals we are always in need of foster homes. Many of the animals we receive come from HOARDER homes.It seem to some people, even if well-intended, is drowning in animals. They are taking in too many, can not feed and take care of them properl and stay out of trouble. Recently in a neighboring city, where over 100 cats and dogs that are found in terrible conditions. Some dead, some alive. The home was a $ 2.4 million U.S. dollars mansion in a very luxurious city, but the owners had left home with the animal in them when they went bankrupt. A few of the animals were trapped in the walls. Faeces were several inches high throughout the home. A delivery man noticed the stench. The house was bought at an auction block and in the circumstances the buyer can not examine the site until he had already bought it. It probably will be convicted. The new buyer is out luck.The animals that were rescued were placed in the local Shelter. Some have been adopted. Some were too sick to put up for adoption. They were emaciated, dehydrated, had upper respiratory diseases, tooth decay, birth defects due to inbreeding and behavioral disorders. The owners have been charged witrh 20 cases of animal cruelty .. In many situations hamstring larger animals will prey on smaller animals. Dogs become food aggressive and smaller, weaker dogs and whelping mothers are prey.I have a neighbor nearby who has been in over her head. She has been with the cats but not gettng themspayed. She is elderly and disabled. Our local organization has tried to pry some of these cats away from her. One of the problems with hoarders, they often do not want help. They are secretive and un cooperative. They feel no one else will treat their animals well. The license their animals because they're afraid to get them removed. This particular woman has a hole in her garage door so the cats can go in and out. Although I live on a very quiet street at least once a month one of her cats are dead on the road. The rest wander neighborhood.Another problem is the living conditions of people in these circumstances. It is dangerous and can be fatal. What begins as a sanctuary for homeless animals is one unhygienic environment that is observed only when the conditions have been beyond extreme.Intervention is important, prevention is even more important. Hoarded animals need immediate attention such as hamsters. For much of the good is really too much.

The Amazing Race 16: Episode One Review

Eleven teams jaws dropped when Phil Keoghan announced that he would use public transportation in Los Angeles to get to the airport for the first phase of The Amazing Race 16. The first 3 teams to arrive were to receive the tickets on the first flight, which would be an hour before the second flight. But, surprise! Moving Our Dogs to Germany was terrifying for us than it was for them

The big news, Big Trip-when my husband, Bill, said we would be heading to Germany, I was not as happy as I could have been. Instead of thinking about all the wonderful experiences we can have in Germany, I thought about our two beagles, Flea and MacGregor. My dogs are the closest I have children of my own and I worry about how they would fare, but in plastic boxes for over seven hours, riding in the trunk. I found myself wishing my dogs were a bit smaller so that I might have a prayer to bring them into the interior. "Do not worry," Bill said, "People take their animals to Europe all the time. They will be fine. "I looked doubtfully at Flea, which, at about eight years old are pretty set in his ways. He hates to be locked away in a drawer. Suddenly I was glad he was too big to ride in the cabin. I knew he would spend the entire flight, howling in anguish, protesting being locked in his doggie jail instead of sitting on my lap. Fortunately, MacGregor, is my younger beagle, much more relaxed about being in a box. He seems to see it as a safe haven. I worry a little less about him.Like some good human beagle mom, I started hunting on the Internet for advice on how to get my two beagles abroad with a minimum of pain and hassle. I found a couple of good articles that offer suggestions on how to make my dog more comfortable during their flight. The first thing I needed was two plastic carriers that had holes on all four sides and met the standards that the airline industry for safe pet travel. For I went to Petsmart, where I was sure I would find the perfect carrier. I did not give my dogs with me on that trip, figuring they would be too much to hold while I looked at drawers. I knew each of my beagles weighed about 25 pounds and I thought I could guess at their height. I went to the box section and started looking at the carriers, who all appeared either too big or too small. I knew that my dogs need to be able to stand up, lie down, and turn in their boxes, the boxes had not yet even within the size limits of the airline. Buying equipment and teaching my dogs to use ThemI saw a couple of boxes that seem to be about the right size and their labels said they would hold a dog that weighed about 25 pounds. The next size up, I knew would be too large. I put the boxes in my car, eyeing them for only a moment before I checked out, wondering if they would be too small. I finally decided that I could not go with the larger, forked over $ 60 for two carriers, took them home and put them together.Once I had my trusty dog carrier mounted, I thought it was time to have my beagles try them out. I looked at the dogs, wonder which would be more cooperative of the two. Flea tend to fight less than MacGregor does, but MacGregor is more comfortable in the boxes. To further cuddle my dogs and gussy up their plastic pillows, I bought them a couple of really soft cushions to place on the floor of the cage. After letting them nap on new pillows for a few days, I put them in boxes. Then it was time for the moment of truth. I took Flea and tried to get him to go in the box. He was having none of it, so I grabbed MacGregor. Same result. None of my dogs wanted no part of trying out their new airlines. I was left feeling like a frustrated failure.What to do ... what to do ... I thought to myself. I consulted the Internet again. One article advised me to feed my dogs in crates and give them lots of candy there. As it so happens, happens my dog Flea to be pretty finicky about food, especially for a beagle. There are times when he actually turns down his morning rations, choosing to eat them later on MacGregor not already snarfed them down. But Flea loves his treats. Maybe I could get him to like the box by giving him lots of dog cookies in there. I began to hide the candy in the small carriers. MacGregor was a little more interested in finding them, but Flea got into the act too distant future. Both dogs would sniff out the candy, but they would only go into the carriers for long enough to find and retrieve their dog snacks. They liked to eat them out of the drawers. September 16th was the big day. I fretted that my dogs would not get used to the boxes in time for their flight to Germany. As the day approached, I knew I had to get my dogs in carriers, if only for a minute or two. I tried to make them go in head first. It was not successful, because the dogs would stay with their forelimbs. Then I had the bright idea to back them into the cage. Jackpot! They still struggled a bit, but it was much easier to get them in the carriers. They would not cooperate by showing me that they could turn, but I could see that despite the fact that the boxes looked a little crowded, the dogs seemed to fit pretty well, even if they do not look too happy. I spent the summer trying to prepare my dogs for their great adventure. I worried about everything, especially after I made the mistake of reading a few horror stories about dogs overheating during flights and dying while trying to flee their carriers. I imagined my beloved beagles suffering in that way, then realized that most airlines will not fly animals when the ground temperature is greater than 85 degrees Fahrenheit. I felt much better when Bill said that our flight was leaving in the evening, when soil temperature was probably cooler. Even better, our flights direct one to Frankfurt. We were able to catch a connecting flight to Stuttgart from Frankfurt, but thought our dogs would be better off if we just got them out of their crates as soon as possible and drove the rest of the way to our new city. In the long run it proved a wise approach. The dogs came out of their boxes, stretched their legs and had a chance to escape before we started the two-hour drive south and we did not have to worry about them doing it on another flight. One thing to be careful when flying with pets are quarantine requirements. It is best to get a direct flight, if possible, but pay special attention on layovers in other countries. Some countries require animals to be quarantined and will confiscate all the animals that pass, even if they are on their way to another country. Other requirements to move to GermanyThere were other things to consider in addition to actual flight. I wanted my dogs would be welcome in Germany as soon as we got there. Once again the Internet came to the rescue. I have heard the German Embassy's website and found out the country's requirements. First, there are several breeds banned in Germany. It is illegal to import pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, bull terriers, and some dogs that are known to be bred for fighting. There are other breeds that are legal to own, but must undergo a temperament test or be muzzled while in public. Complicating matters is the fact that the laws that apply to restricted dog breeds are different for each of Germany's 16 states. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that my beagles were not on any of the lists of banned or restricted breeds. I was not surprised by it, of course, but I wanted to be sure. When I checked out other requirements, to realize that I had heard that the Germans were big on paperwork and quite strict about adherence to rules. I found out that Germany requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies every year and does not recognize the three-year vaccine is available in the U.S.. Dogs who come to Germany must be vaccinated at least thirty days prior to arrival in the country. Our dogs were well within three years vaccine requirements, but they would need a new rabies shot before we left the U.S. I got it taken care of about three months before we left. All dogs must be microchipped. Flea and MacGregor were two dogs that we got through a breed rescue. I knew that MacGregor was chipped, but Flea had managed to slip through the cracks, so I made an appointment to get him chipped too. Finally, Germany all dogs to be examined by a veterinarian within ten days after arrival. The veterinarian must complete a health form that is translated into German and the form must be stamped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Fortunately, vet check no problem, because Bill is in the army and all military vets are USDA certified.Bill told Army veterinarian who examined the dogs that we were a little worried about how they would handle the flight. The vet laughed and said, "Oh, do not worry about it. You take a Valium and they'll be fine. "The big day! On the big day, we loaded our beagles in carriers and got them to Dulles Airport. A helpful baggage handlers pointed us to the right ticketing counter, where we paid $ 200 for both of our beagles to ride as checked baggage at our United Airlines flights to Germany. Two friendly ticket agents, we had to fill in various forms, including instructions for their care. We had hamsters bottles on the front of the carrier so that the dogs would have access to a water source, if they wanted it. The ticket agent said we also needed to supply food to the dogs. We had some packaged food for Flea and MacGregor, but no containers. The two happy ladies who helped us gave us a couple of small plastic bowls, which they taped to the top of the crates with food. If I had to do it again, I would have frozen water in bottles hamster so it would melt during the trip and not do as much of a mess in the box. The ticket agent directed us to the security line, where the boxes were x-rayed. We took the dogs out while the boxes went through the machine. After the carriers were cleared, the dogs went back in and TSA security wrapped tape around the conveyors. We waved goodbye to our dogs and then set about getting us checked in for the trip. Before we left, an airline official gave us a couple of tags lets us know that Flea and MacGregor had made it safely aboard. Bill and I took a deep breath as we waited for the plane to take off for our new home.Arrival in GermanyWe arrived in Frankfurt, Germany around 11:00 am local time. Bill and I were very keen to be reunited with our dogs, knowing they had been locked in their carriers for over seven hours and was probably dying to pee. We wondered where we would have to go to find our beloved pet. Fortunately it did not turn out to be a problem, for it was not long before we heard the Flea's distinctive baying. He sounded distressed. Okay, he cursed more than any other. We simply followed the sound until we found our two beagles in their boxes guarded by a couple of confused looking Germans.Bill and I grabbed the boxes and hauled over to the baggage claim area. Flea was still howling, but MacGregor was very quiet and calm. A torn looking official veterinarian asked me for our paperwork. I looked through our luggage and found it. She looked it over and it was fine. Then she asked me to take the dogs out of thirteen boxes so she could check their microchips. After ensuring that both dogs were properly labeled, she said that we'd passed the inspection. Before she left us, she warned us that we needed more carriers if we plan to send our dogs back to the U.S. Apparently the Germans are much more severe if the carrier size than Americans are.Flea wanted no part of it is put back in his box. He howled in protest when we moved to the rental area and we got lots of road and irritated eyes from the Germans who went past. MacGregor, however, was a perfect gentleman. I finally released the Flea from the carrier, marvel at the fact that in Germany, dogs are pretty much allowed everywhere. When we had a rental car, Bill and I pushed a cart loaded with all our luggage and MacGregor. Flea was happy to saunter out of the airport on their own four legs. I think all four of us are excited to past as part of our German adventure. The vet who had checked them before we left the States proved to be right about how our animals are treated fly. They were good, if not a little thirsty and disoriented from the journey. In other words, they were certainly not worse than we were when we landed ... and the fact is that so far they seem to be more welcome in Germany than we are!
