The pyramid-shaped Missile Site Control Building stands in the middle of the Stanley R Mickelsen SAFEGUARD Complex. This anti-ballistic missile defense site was designed to detect and intercept attacking nuclear warheads from Soviet missiles coming over the North Pole. Nuclear-tipped Sprint and Spartan anti-ballistic missiles were deployed at the site to shoot down the incoming Soviet missiles. The facility, built in the early to mid 1970s at a cost of US$5.7 billion, near Langdon, North Dakota, was fully operational for only a day in October 1975 before Congress voted to shut it down. At the time it had one of the most advanced radar systems, and boasted one of the most powerful computers, in the world. From “Fallout”, Sim Chi Yin, 2017, for the Nobel Peace Centre. @nobelpeaceoslo ——- Friends in Shanghai, I will give two public lectures on “Fallout”, the photo exhibition commission I shot for the Nobel Peace Prize. Cool to see trailers and banners on my exhibition on nuclear weapons for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize up around the city centre of Oslo. In September (2017), I was commissioned to create this year’s Nobel Peace Prize exhibition. As soon as this year’s Peace laureate — the global civil society group, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) @goodbyenukes — was announced on October 6, I have been working to produce this show that opened in Oslo after the Peace Prize ceremony on December 11. @nobelprize_org I travelled 6,000 kilometers along the China-North Korea border and through six states in United States, to create a series of diptychs reflecting on humans’ experience with nuclear weapons, past and present. One is the only country to have tested nuclear weapons in the 21st century. The other is the first country to have tested and used them. North Korea and the United States are at two ends of the nuclear equation – but today are locked in a dangerous cycle of threats and counter-threats. Friends in Oslo, catch the show which is up for a year from this week! @nobelpeaceoslo https://www.nobelpeacecenter.org/en/pressbriefing/#/pressreleases/visual-artist-sim-chi-yin-is-this-years-nobel-peace-prize-photographer-2317920 https://www.nobelpeacecenter.org/en/exhibitions/ban-the-bomb-2/ More details in link in profile.

Made this time-lapse for @nytmag 's Voyages issue out last weekend. ---- #Repost @nytimes (@get_repost) ・・・ August is the hottest month in Chongqing, a municipality in China located roughly 700 miles from the ocean. Last month the temperature peaked at about 106 degrees — which suggests why the city is known as one of the country’s “3 great furnaces.” And the humidity, which often reaches 80%, helps explain its designation as “the fog capital.” The closest respite for local families is a 16-acre Caribbean- and Mayan-themed water park, built on Nashan Mountain. On a summer day, more than 13,000 people from Chengdu to Guang’an might visit the attraction, most of which is underwater or within the range of hoses and sprinklers. Picnic tables are built into shallow pools for games of Chinese chess and mah-jongg, and musical acts perform on the water stage. But the most popular spot is a wave pool that produces 8 different kinds of swells. @chiyin_sim of @VIIPhoto filmed this video of day-trippers floating at #Chongqing Haichang Caribbean Water Park while on assignment for @nytmag. We’ll be sharing more photos from @nytmag’s Voyages issue over the next couple of days. Visit the link in our profile to see more. #NYTMagVoyages @viiphoto

Thanks @inbetweenonline for the one minute interview at my exhibition on "The Rat Tribe" in the @istanbulbienali . It is among works by 56 artists from 32 countries -- sculpture, painting, installation, video and a tiny bit of photography -- showing in the Biennale which opened today to the public. See it if you can. Strong reviews in the art press. Thanks to curators @elmgreendragset for the lovely opportunity and a lot more! @viiphoto @pulitzercenter @magnumfoundation

Arrived in Amsterdam to begin a month-long artist residency at @dockingstationtoday to work on my long-in-waiting family history project. Speaking on my it tomorrow /Thursday 7 Sept at @vondelcs 1pm and on a panel on 23 Sept at @unseenplatform. Details: http://www.dockingstation.today/news . Excited but also somewhat floored by the work to be done to pull this project together, to find the resources to get the oral histories I've recorded transcribed and archived, to seek curation and editing to sculpt the stills, film, sound and archival material into a form that does justice to this story - that of not just my family but many in what was Malaya. Personal projects are often long-neglected as we are torn away with more immediate (often, income-generating) work; this one needs much mental space and used my training as a student of history, journalist, writer, photographer and as a grand-daughter... Grateful for the headspace now, amid the packed schedule of meetings with practitioners! Much to learn, much to do! Thank you to Docking Station's @missie_lopez, @marga_rotteveel for creating the opportunities; @chinterseer for the nomination and support, and organisations and individuals who have pitched in for this years-long project. Onward! @viiphoto @magnumfoundation @theiwmf @chinafile

Thank you to the (mystery) nominators.
I look forward to meeting and working with other 29 young leaders from around the Asia Pacific for this Asia Society/ Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative fellowship summit in Melbourne in November where we will no doubt discuss the state of our troubled world / earth and at least start dreaming up some attempts at solutions.

I had the pleasure of making new band photos for Beijing indie psychedelic experimental group Chui Wan recently, on a fun shoot.
The pictures of the cool four-piece band are for the launch of their new (and third) album "The Landscape the Tropics Never Had". They'll be touring China, the US and Europe to launch this album (which is rather addictive, I must say!) Check them out! http://www.maybemars.com/artists/chui-wan/
