When I was a wee little tot, helping my family rake leaves in the big backyard of our big old house, I thought to myself, "Man, I don't want to own land when I grow up if it makes this much extra work for me."

I feel like my experience with an excess of yardwork is a microcosm of America's economic relationship to Suburbia. We've degraded the world environment and created a no-win economy for the sake of luxuries that only cause us more trouble.

And in regards to the 2024 election, that no-win economy is biting us in the ass.

Oh, but there are many varieties of American pizza! There's New York pizza, Chicago Deep Dish, Californian pizza (shudder), and of course my favorite, the best, without peer or parallel in all the world, Connecticut pizza.

Okay listen we need to allow Americans the same ability to claim their versions food by adding their country’s name in front of it the way the rest of us do. We had some Texans living with us for a week and when we talked about American food one of them said “I don’t want to include pizza because we didn’t invent it” and we were like “Just say American pizza. It’s way different to an Italian pizza anyway. Shit, as a Dane I can tell a Swedish pizza from a Danish pizza”

Like there’s a reason why it’s called Swedish Meatballs it’s because literally every country has their own version of a meatball. Look, on the left are Swedish Meatballs and on the right are Danish Meatballs. We live right next to each other!

So as long as you know you didn’t invent it and that it’s different from the original I think it’s perfectly fair to say American pizza or American meatballs for that matter. I mean, American Italian food is acknowledged as a thing so loosen up a bit and have a snack.

After all, one of the fundamental principles of literature is to show instead of tell.

I dislike the inclusion of a lot of modern Queer Rep Terminology in spec fic (fantasy more than sci fi) on basically aesthetic grounds. But also on to be slightly more principled about it, I feel like forcing the writers to actually describe their characters' identities and sexualities without recourse to a labelled bucket they can just slap and say 'yknow, this!' would be very artistically fruitful.

It is also worth noting that Tolkien said the elves who were healers didn't like to fight, because they deemed that the dealing of death diminished the power of healing. Yet Eowyn's character arc is about her overcoming that barrier, and becoming a healer even after she has dealt death.

I do love that you can see the influence of Tolkien meaning for Eowyn to die throughout her arc. That girl just screams "doomed by the narrative". She's set up for this grand yet tragic death, and wants for nothing else than a grand exit and a glorious end to all things.

But having her live is so much more interesting. And having her live to find happiness especially. She seems like a tragic character. She thinks herself a tragic character. She is overwhelmed by a sense of doom and helplessness. Her narrative is overwhelmed by a sense of doom and helplessness.

But she isn't doomed.

Turns out, decent healthcare, clued in and concerned family members, and a decent support base, go a long towards towards un-dooming her narrative.

The funny thing is that we're in this specific situation because Trump decided to run again, so Biden decided he had to run again, and then Biden had to drop out because his debate performance made him sound like a dying dog, Biden passed to Kamala, suddenly Trump's opponent is a black woman. If Kamala wins then America gets its first female president because Trump helped set the stage for her.

I mean honestly I don’t hate Harris. or Biden, who has actually done a lot of good in the last four years especially considering the mess he had to clean up. but whatever gets the “my imaginary moral high ground is more important than peoples’ lives” fucks to vote.

Realizing that all the doom and gloom presented in the news seemed to have nothing to do with what I saw walking around outside, and deciding that actual evil is spread far more thinly than the news implies.

fuck what “radicalized” you, i wanna know what DEradicalized you. what made you believe in nuance again. what made you release the need to be morally pure and righteous. what made you realize being radicalized in any direction is not a good thing.
