Veterans

I had a rather random thought the other day about the difference in mindset between veterans of iraq/Afghanistan and veterans of ww2 every book store i go to with a military history section is full of autobiographies of every tom dick and Harry who set foot in Afghanistan who wrote a book and gave themselves some stupid ass nickname like the angle of death or the reaper or something. Stupid like that acting like ita fucking call of duty and all the people they killed to be able to give themselves these ego boosting nicknames didn't have lives, families hopes and dreams.

You have all these people who went over there fought against an under developed unorganized army killed fuckloads of civilians all for American oil companies to steal resources that will never benefit these soldiers of a false cause but they want to sing their own praises.

And on the other hand you have ww2 vets which by and large avoid talking about the war at all costs

Perhaps because they know what real war is like against another well organized army and not some poor farmers with shitty guns and improvised munitions

My great grandfather was a ww2 veteran and received a purpleheart bronze star silver star and 2 oak leaf clusters and was wounded numerous times

For the entire remainder of his life he refused to tell anyone what he did to get those medals and he died in the mid 90s so he lived about 60 years after the war ended

The only thing he ever told anyone about the war was when my mother did a project about him when she was in highschool in the mid 80s (so 40 years after the war ended)

And all he said was that so many men died that the bodies piled up and you had to climb over them and all the blood stained the sand and the water red for days

He never said another thing about the war for the rest of his life

Now veterans glorify the war and acr like heroes

Like Chris Kyle who shot looters during hurricane katrina

And according to his wife killing was something Kyle enjoyed greatly

Yet he wrote a book that was a bestseller and had a movie made about him

This was probably not even remotely comprensible but just a bunch of random thoughts all well

For example a trans women that is not accepted by their family and such

Another plot line could be the townspeople are calling to all able bodied men to go rescue the princess and the only one brave enough is a ftm man (who looks like Hercules as they normally do) and they slay the dragon or whatever the fuck

I probably have one of the most autistic book shelves

The majority of the books are shitload of woodworking books and magazines probably like 100 magazines and a few dozen books

Then a bunch of books about mythology Rick Riordan and classical

Greek Roman norse Egyptian ancient sumerian. Celtic native american some west African

Like 5 national audubon society field guides of bugs and reptiles

Like 10 different Garfield books

Books on archery flint knapping and homesteading

Also a few books on andean fist braiding

Then to top it all off i have a big ass agate book end

I went to an amusement park today and as I was walking around I saw people of all races and religions and some dudes dressed like cat boys

And you know what I fuck with it

Thats the type of shit my great grandfather fought for in ww 2 on the beaches of Normandy and anzio

Like literally that's what I consider the American dream that's what our sons fathers and brothers have died for through the generations and decades.

And you see all these assholes shitting on gays trans people and immigrant and in the next breath tell you to remember why we have memorial day

What do you fucking think they fought and died for

Do you think your grandfather waded through bloody mud up to his fucking knees for you to do the same shit as the people he died fighting

They say men used to go to war and shit like that and honestly (even though they still do) its good that they don't as much anymore people should be allowed to be innocent and soft and express themselves as they please
