Not enough fantasy and scifi says "you are enough, just as you are" to physically disabled people. We always gotta have some kinda magic hi tech enhancements instead of like... a regular wheelchair or sight cane or whatever. Let us just Be, you know? Quit trying to make us "better" and say "disabled people can have adventures too" instead.

the tradwife movement is the same as it has always been - back in the kitchen, back to breeding - it just has better branding.
when i was younger, i hated pink. i was not like other girls. this is now something i'm embarrassed of - this was not me being a "girl's girl."
but it was expressing something many of us felt at the time: i literally wasn't what girlhood was supposed to be. this is a hard thing to explain, but you know when you're not performing girlhood correctly. it isn't as easy as "i liked x when girls liked y" - because there were other girls that liked x, too - but i never figured out exactly the correct way to like x, or to be interested in y.
now there is the divine feminine. this is the same rhetoric it has always been: women are biologically driven to like pink and ribbons and submitting to our husbands.
the problem is that the patriarchy found a better PR team. because yes, actually, i want every woman to have the choice to be a homemaker. i also want her taken seriously for her legitimate home-making labor. i want her to be recognized as also having a job, just unpaid. i want men to have this opportunity, too.
but it is no longer "i made this choice and I love it." instead it is a sixteen-paragraph rant about how selfish it is that my generation isn't having kids. instead it's long videos about how if you feed your children processed foods, you're going to kill them. instead it is "this is what womanhood is supposed to be. i feel bad for any other choices you're making."
the shame spiral is just prettier. it is large houses devoid of personality. it is the implication: if you don't have this, you aren't happy. the solid, everlasting assurance: women are actually supposed to be submitting. this is the default. this is the natural state of things. all other attempts inflict suffering.
but you can no longer say i'm not like other girls. you can no longer reject this image completely. you cannot find it revolting, even if you know that the underbelly is toxic and festering. sure, it is the same repackaged patriarchy. but the internet does not have shades of grey. you should support and reward other women! your disgust is actually internalized misogyny. not because you are seeing a vision of yourself the way they're trying to train you to be. not because you feel her ghost pass within an inch of your earlobe. not because your father will eventually ask you - why can't you be like her?
because they figured out how to make it beautiful: women will sell other women on this idea, and we will find the singular loophole in feminism. sure, she's shaming you in most of her videos. sure, she implies that a different life is obscene. but she just wants you to be happy! you'd be happier if you were listening!
and the whole time you're sitting there thinking: i'd actually just be happier if i had that kind of money.

has anyone noticed lately how black friday deals or any type of "sale" deals aren't actually deals. like i had something on my amazon wishlist that was $19.99 before, and now it's saying it WAS $49.99 but is on sale for $19.99 for a "black Friday deal." as if it wasn't just $19.99 two weeks ago at regular price. like these damn websites atp are straight up lying and trying to trick people into thinking something is on sale/is a good deal when it's not. and this isn't exclusive to that one item or even just amazon. i've been seeing it everywhere. the fuck

it is so jarring and weird when a fantasy book is like “ok let’s go around the circle and have each character talk about which lgbt umbrella category they identify with” like ok your fantasy world doesn’t have to be feudal europe but can it not be 2023 twitter please

from one chronically anxious person to another: the world is not going to go up in flames. What happens will be more slow, more bureaucratic, more boring. There is no catastrophe to end all catastrophes, no rapture, no sudden end. You can't give into the call of the void, because there is no void. So you just have to do the work to make tomorrow a better place, anyway. Because that's how it gets better.

operation treat my dog like a toddler is going incredibly well
communication is best it’s ever been, so much more affection, he seems a lot more confident
getting him out for a walk before the squirrels are out has gotta be a big part of it. That said it’s so dark and COLD I feel like I should be carrying a lil lantern

US recall of yu shang food inc ready-to-eat products due to deadly listeria contamination
this recall was announced november 9, but expanded on november 21, and deaths were reported on november 22. today is november 23.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21, 2024 – Yu Shang Food, Inc., a Spartanburg, SC, establishment, is recalling approximately 72,240 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products within their shelf life that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). This release is being reissued to expand the scope of the November 9, 2024, recall.
All ready-to-eat products produced prior to October 28, 2024, are subject to recall. View full product list. View labels.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and available for purchase online.
some emphasis mine.
Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
emphasis mine. for the record, it can take up to around 90 days for listeria to cause illness. as in, closer to three months after eating something contaminated with listeria.
and unfortunately, a pregnant person has died, losing both of their twins. but only one of the twins tested positive for listeria, so the other one does not technically count as a related death. might be a false negative.
right now there have been 11 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 2-3 deaths depending on how you count. these numbers are expected to rise. do not rely on the list of states with confirmed illnesses to keep you safe. these products were shipped nationwide, and are contaminated and capable of causing illness within the affected date range regardless of where they were sold. (before october 28, 2024)
although the CDC uses yu shang braised beef shank as the thumbnail for their investigation, the FSIS has not yet added its picture to the official list of label pictures as of when I am typing this.
this is the style of packaging on these products. there are too many images of the recalled products to add to this post, but if you recognize this style of packaging, please check your fridge and freezer. if you find these products, do not eat them. throw them out or return them to wherever you bought them. sometimes a recall will include a note that it is safe to eat a recalled product if cooked thoroughly, but there is no such language on this FSIS recall.
ALL of these products produced before october 28, 2024, are being recalled.
list of recalled yu shang product names:
Japanese Chasu Pork Belly
Braised Pork Belly In Brown Sauce
Seasoned Pork Feet
Seasoned Pork Hock
Chinese Brand Spicy Duck Head
Yushang Brand Cooked Chicken
Chinese Brand Spicy Duck Neck
Bazhen Seasoned Whole Chicken
Chinese Brand Spicy Duck Tongues
Chinese Brand Spicy Duck Wings
Chinese Brand Chicken Feet
Yushang Sausage Made with Pork and Chicken
Seasoned Pork Tongues
Seasoned Chicken Quarter Leg
Braised Beef Shank
Braised Chicken Szechuan Pepper Flavor
Yu Shang Brand Cooked Pork Hock
Seasoned Pork Snout Meat
Spicy Pork Ear
Spicy Chicken Gizzards
Spicy Pork Feet
Lambs Head Soup (frozen)
Chinese Brand Spicy Chicken Feet
as of the time I am posting this, the label list on the FSIS website is outdated, but the product list is the correct expanded version.
listeria can take months to cause illness after exposure, and then up to a month or so for an illness to become officially associated with a foorborne illness outbreak. the true number of people who got sick is expected to be higher, and the number of listeria cases associated with this outbreak is expected to rise. not everyone who gets sick from listeria seeks out medical attention.
most people exposed to listeria will not develop major illness. but if you are in a high risk group and have eaten these products, talk to your doctor. there are antibiotics you can be prescribed before possibly developing symptoms. and as always, if you think you have gotten sick from the recalled products, please consider seeking medical attention, even if just to get your case officially linked to this outbreak. listeriosis can cause long-term medical issues, and if it does, you really want as many relevant medical records of it as possible.
the FSIS is currently working on a list of retail locations that sold these products, but as I post this now, it has not yet been uploaded. these products were also sold online.
as a reminder, I do not post every unites states food recall. please consider staying informed from official government recall sources. and if US recalls are irrelevant to you, please consider staying informed about whatever recalls are relevant to you. chances are, there are more recalls than you realize.

stay safe and take care!

i think there’s something to be said about how the gig economy makes things ostensibly more convenient but also worse. and not just like, doordash guys take too long to get to you so your food is cold. but because the business model is centered around a million people doing work without any familiarity with what theyre doing and decentralized from the businesses they’re working with, you get service that’s being reinvented from scratch every time it’s purchased.
it happens all the time that I’ll order an uber and when they pick me up, they’ll just stop in the middle of the street with their hazards on, making me dodge traffic to get to them and pissing off the cars around them. and then I’ll get in the car and chat with the driver and find out they’re actually from two counties over and they’ve never driven here before, so they don’t know where parking is or whether they’re heading to a wide open parking lot or a busy downtown. and then you start to realize that they’re not being a dick, they’re just given as little information as possible every time they pick up a ride so they have to just guess how and where to pick up a passenger. and since they’re paid by ride, they’re incentivized to pick you up as fast as possible. and all the people who cared about finding a safe place to pick you up quit the app or stopped doing that so all you’re left with is the pissed off cockroach motherfuckers.
and then you see that this happens with every fucking app. doordash sucks because you pay 8 million dollars for delivery and you still have to hike half a mile to find the guy because he got lost in your apartment complex. Instacart sucks because the guy picking your groceries couldn’t care less about getting ripe fruit and replaces your heavy cream with shaving cream. customer support for all this sucks because the guy helping you can’t do anything more than offer you $5 credit, beg for your forgiveness, and hope you get out of the queue fast enough for him to go to the bathroom. because all of them aren’t given enough time to do a good job or enough money to care.
and every time a gig worker makes the experience suck for you, it’s a rational decision. they’re evaluating the money they’re being paid and if it’s worth getting paid less to do a good job, and correctly deciding that it isn’t. so you can’t even get mad, because you’d do it too. and so the company manages to pass on its race to the bottom to its lowest-paid employees.

not to quote rent at you like the millennial queer i am, but the opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation.
make art. make music. make literature. make poetry. make clothing. make a birdhouse. make a meal. make a little guy. make a journey. make friendships. make community. make connections. make someone smile. make someone laugh. make someone burn bright with the assurance that they are loved. make a home.
your job on this earth is to care for yourself and be a blessing to those around you. we create a better world right here, where we stand, starting with us.

I'm this close to just sending that trans inclusive radical misogynist post, the one about how there's loads of guys who'll go "oh, you're a man now, great, come shit talk women with us" to every blog insisting that trans men can't have male privilege and it's transandrophobia to say they do. Not every trans man has this experience but it's actually pretty common even for out trans men to be seen as, if not "real" men depending on who you ask, certainly non-women, and encouraged to perform misogyny as part of their social transition.

It is simultaneously true that it’s best to give trans kids puberty blockers if they need them and that if you went through a first puberty you’re not doomed forever like both of these things are true

hey so recently I've become roommates with someone who is from a significantly more conservative background than me (my family is mostly communists and really like sex positive and everything while her family seems pretty conservative even by like not leftist standards) and while she isn't conservative, she is very like sex negative, esp with saying stuff about stds and slutshaming that make me deeply uncomfortable. How can i deal with this without like fucking up my rooming situation for the next year? Asking you bc you always seem to be onset with people who have pretty conservative views about sex
well the thing is that I simply minimize my contact with those people unless they've expressly communicated a desire to change their worldview, because I'm in not in the business of wasting my time trying to convince people who are fundamentally uninterested in being convinced
