Painting, Cutting and Scratching Products From The Shop

My interest in photography is an inspiration that I got from Alberto Sanchez. His work entailed exploration of landscape via unorthodox use of the traditional techniques and materials. He aimed more on creating a symbiosis between an imagination and a photographic document. I find my project and interest more connected to Sanchez’s work. He largely uses landscape photos form the urban life to paint the pictures, and I prefer taking workplace photos to paint most of my pictures from the products people use on daily basis.

Walid Raad project The Atlas Group (1989–2004). Walid Raad project is one of a kind. Same to Sanchez, I was challenged by his archive photography work in Lebanon during the civil war (1975–90). In addition, his work came out more appealing because it was influenced by the socioeconomic and military policies that have shaped the Middle East.

The above pictures show an on Going Project. The pictures are printed on Hahnemuhle German Etching. They largely contain Mix Makeup products that the store sells. The products include the Makeup, Skincare, Shampoo & Styling, Bath, Men Care as well as Confectionary. Perhaps, making use of the retractable Knife to cut the pictures made me to realize the extra effort I needed to out on my work. I also express a similar interest of using daily life products while working at the retail. I am attracted to the fact that artists can simply work on simple ideas. The thing I’m enjoying is I don’t know how the photos are going to turn out in the end.

After more than 2 months of documenting my workplace, I decided to work with the above 7 pictures for my final exhibition. Perhaps, I chose the best just to ensure that my work looked more appealing and attractive to the eyes of people. It is equally my passion to have something better.

First Test did not go well because all the pictures turned out blurred as a result of using a small point and shoot film camera. I never wanted anyone to know what I was about to do so that my manager would not find out. I was taking pictures quickly and putting in my pocket. Next time, I will take my bigger DSLR camera so that I can get better quality of images

In ‘Night Shifts’ (2018-19), the main character explores his day and night-time job in a health and beauty retailer in the UK. As part of the management team, he works up to 56 hours per week, of which only 39 hours are paid. In addition, he has been scheduled to do night shifts. In ‘Night Shifts’, Thapa recounts the everyday routine of a night shift worker in his workplace. All the night workers are immigrants with majority from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Frustrated and depressed by long night shift hours and unpaid overtime, Thapa releases his anger by painting, cutting and scratching black and white images he has taken of his work environment. He does this by making use of the products from the shop such as nail varnish, lipstick, charcoal toothpaste, face washes and masks.

I have not been able to find any information from where the paper was produced. So, I’m decided to change my Project.

Lizzie Sadin - The Trap in Saatchi Gallery. She explored the trafficking and forced prostitution of women in Nepal. Human trafficking is not anything new to Nepalese. The pictures are beautifully documented and well written. The most beautiful part that I liked was to read Women’s stories and how they ended up in the situation. Perhaps, this makes up one of the most interesting stories that I ever came across. How I promise to produce more similar pieces regarding the endless plight of women in the society.

I feel like my project is not moving ahead. I can’t find any information about the city where this was made.

My intention on this project does not entail exposing the expired photography paper. What I intend to do is to research all the information that was never documented in the year that was produced. The paper is in the Russian language. The text below was the information about the paper I could gather from the help of my Russian colleague and her mother.

While researching for an expired photographic paper, I found large numbers of unused Soviet Union paper from the 1980s. This must be quite interesting given that 1980s is about 40 years ago.

For the first Photography Practise module I really enjoyed experimenting on the expired photography paper in the darkroom. Through my experiment, I was able to produce similar photographs like Alison Rossiter. For this module, I want to carry on my module with expired photographic paper.

Through the work of Alison Rossiter, I was inspired with how she produced her abstract photographs without using a camera. She collects and develops a decades-expired photographic paper to reveal subtle exposures made through the passage of time. I think this should land in my journal because it is an interesting piece all the same.
