Shit People Say to Women Directors
824 posts
Welcome to Shit People Say To Women Directors (& Other Women In Film). We are an anonymous open blog for all individuals identifying as women who work in film & television. It’s a crazy business, especially for women. Until now, we haven’t had a platform to share some of the let’s call them “unusual” things people have said to us while working. This is for catharsis and to expose some of the absurd barriers women face in the entertainment business. Open to all women in film. Please feel free to submit stories via the anonymous submission box. We’d love to share your story.

I got fired for not getting coffee.
I was working on a short film that had no budget, that I had the chance to produce. I got a call from the director telling me that apart from other petty reasons the he was letting me go and wouldn't credit me because while I was sitting around doing nothing (when in fact I was actually writing contracts and call sheets) he had to get coffee orders from the crew. The crew was made up of all his mates and I was one of only three women on set (the other women were also his friends). He said it should have been my responsilblty to get coffee for everyone.
But he did tell me not to let this get me down or discourage me because I am a "strong, independant woman.”
I wanted to kick him and his false feminist word vomit in the balls.

I worked on a major basic cable show for kids
I was told I couldn't direct in the first 13 episodes because I was “a new mom” and they “wanted me to get my strength back."
I worked on the show in another capacity, and they expected me to be back three weeks after a c-section--no mention of “getting my strength back” for that position (the hours/commitment was the same).
I needed the job so I never reported it. There's so much more I want to say about it, but I'm still pissed.

With full knowledge that I was emotionally abused throughout an entire shoot
by a male FX artists and his assistant—I was not asked back on the next production because, “I don't get along with him.”

I was Sound Editor and Boom Operator for a short student film
A guy (who was acting) kept mansplaining how I should do my job.
At one point he even yelled at me because the boom was on, despite the fact our female Director had instructed me to start recording.
As this was a student film he was also putting together the credits, which he tried to remove me from.
What an asshole.

I am in a Screenwriting class at school
and one of my (straight, white, male) classmates gave me this note:
"If I were reading this script, I'd think that the writer has it out for men."
My script is a “RomCom” where neither female protagonist ends up with a guy at the end—one girl has a shitty boyfriend, so they break up, and the other girl's boyfriend is fine, but she's queer, so she ends up with another girl at the end.
But if dudes feel threatened by my writing, mission accomplished, I guess!

Sew Not Gonna Happen
I was in the middle of a shoot today when one of the businessmen, whose meeting I was filming, asked me to sew a missing button on his shirt cuff...

I was chatting with a young (male) actor in the studio lot where my production office was based
After talking about the show he was working on he inquired if I was an Assistant on my film and said, "could you introduce me to the Producer of your movie? I'd love to meet him."
I WAS the producer.

Sad Advice
While I was in film school we had a male Sound Mixer who was notorious for not following the direction of female students during their mix sessions.
Another classmate (an Ivy League graduate with ultra liberal leanings) said, “just flirt with him and he'll be easier to handle.”
It was what she “did all the time.”

I sat down in a meeting with a male comedy writer
with the hopes of learning more about the industry. Immediately he says,
"You don't have the face of someone who wants to write comedy."
