A masterpost on Togashi’s gay subtext and why it’s intentional.
Hi ! After seeing so many posts about Togashi dropping subtext about Killua’s possible romantic feelings for Gon, I thought it’d be a good idea to make a sort of “masterpost” with all the subtext that Togashi has included into his work.
I usually see a lot of people trying to say that HxH isn’t about romance and that Togashi isn’t interested in writing romance into the manga, but when you analyze all the subtext that’s been going on the further Gon and Killua’s relationship progresses, I think it’s incorrect to say that Togashi has never hinted at the possibility of romance in HxH.
This is going to be a long post, enjoy your read!
Also, please note that I will only base this analysis on the manga, so there can be no mistake that “maybe this is just something the anime made gayer” : i want to prove that the subtext is 100% intentional on Togashi’s part.
I’d also like to mention, although I will analyze it further after listing the subtext, that Togashi is a VERY smart man. There are always little details in the story and/or foreshadowing that are easily missed at first but when you notice them, it truly makes you understand how much attention and care Togashi puts into his work. There are countless details and symbolism that are analyzed daily through wonderful meta posts, from the main 4′s birthdays and their link to their character or the religious symbolism in Kurapika’s story arc…. Togashi loves to foreshadow and plant little details into his work, so when Togashi plants subtext, I’m sure he 100% knows that he’s writing it, and it can’t be seen as unintentional.

On an entry for “Turtles” in Honchou Shokkan, a book of common articles of food, published 1695.
….Often he (the kappa) bewitches men and women. Some people say that he is the transformation of a big tortoise. Looks like a child with an ugly face ….His skin is greenish yellow, and at the top of his head is a small cavity containing water. This water gives him great physical strength— If you meet with a kappa, deal him a hard blow on the head and drive out the water kept there, and he will fall helpless. It is said that a great number of kappas are found in the Kyūshū provinces, where they are believed to be the transformations of old otters.

English translation was found in Seiichi Shiojiri’s revised translation of “Kappa” in the Introductory Notes.
I can barely read this document, but I did manage to find the spot where it says “old otters” and highlighted it.

Sarazanmai Trailer Visual Analysis

These flags spell (河)童道, (Kappa Street) which in real life is Kaminarimon Street in Asakusa. But something is very off about this typeface. 童 is written in a Mincho style, and 道 is written in a handwritten/script/cursive font. I assumed 道 was part of the original flag, and 童 was hastily added in with camera tracking—but the typefaces do not match at all, and this was incredibly jarring to me.
I decided to check out Google Maps to investigate…but the flags were not in the shot.

If you walk down this road though, you do get some pictures with flags from a different snapshot in time.

These flags are for the Sanja Festival. “Road” is not written anywhere on them as I thought they might be. This is very strange, and means that someone designed the flags with a mixed typeface…and for such beautiful motion tracking and graphics in the trailer, this struck me as particularly odd for anyone who actually worked in Motion and studied Kinetic Typography. It’s a really poor design decision…unless it was trying to call to the viewer…

“The festival is apparently a source of funds for the yakuza groups, who siphon off money from the associations, as well as being an opportunity to do some PR work. Most of the yakuza come from the Yamaguchi-gumi or the Sumiyoshi-kai.”

In any case, from what I gather, Asakusa seems to be renowned for its Yakuza presence?
Also, in regards to my Episode 3 Thoughts, it appears that all the nefarious activities of the Otter Cops are happening at the Tokyo Skytree.

That structure of weaving bars behind Reo is the Tokyo Skytree at Solamachi.
I’ve located the structure in question on Google Maps, but I have no idea where Reo is actually standing. From the camera angle, he must be standing absurdly high…like, he’d have to be on the traffic light or something… Is he floating in the air? I have QUESTIONS.

On the right side of the road is a waterway. The Kitajukken River, I think. It feeds directly into the Sumida River, and looks like this:

With this knowledge, I managed to find some other angles, but still no answers.

And now I’m wondering what implication the Tobu railway has in all of this. The encircled ア looks like it belongs to the Toei line…but Tobu owns the Skytree…and it runs right across the Sumida River…
According to Wikipedia: The Tobu corporate group is also engaged in road transportation (bus/taxi), real estate, and retail. It is the largest investor in the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest structure in Japan. The company is a member of the Mizuho keiretsu.

And they made news in 2013 for loaning money to the Yakuza.
“In September 2013, a routine regulatory control unveiled that Mizuho enabled loans of up to $1.9 million to the Yakuza Japanese mafia. It also appeared that loans to the mob had been approved through its affiliate credit company Orient Corp. This scandal led to the resignation of the group’s CEO Takashi Tsukamoto.”
I’m not sure if this is related to the show at all, but it is terribly interesting…and might give some context to Chikai and Tooi’s backstory…

According to the official Tokyo Skytree website, the illumination we see in Sarazanmai is “Iki”, and it is supposed to evoke a motif of the nearby Sumida River.

What is interesting here to me though, is Marker 3. It says that this light marks the passage of time. In a sense, the Skytree is a giant clock!
Why is this important? Well, for one, Shuuji Terayama–a creator with perhaps the largest influence on Ikuhara–was obsessed with clocks. Terayama is fixated on the passage of time in his films.
I’m attaching some quotes from this YouTube analysis by Zachary Flint.
His very first film "The Cage” strings together a hypnotic series of images which experiment with the idea that time cannot be escaped. This short piece, like many of Terayama’s films involved clocks as a motif. These clocks may be coveted or overlooked–but they’ll be there when a character’s time is up.
There’s an apparent need to regain control of time. In “Pastoral”, the young protagonist wants time to accelerate so he can be an adult. Whereas his over-controlling mother wants time to stop and for him to be her little boy forever. Both want to be in control of time, and Terayama feels the solution lies in individualism–operating on your own time–and that means, carrying a watch.
Other imagery that has been associated with the Skytree are drums and the beating of a heart–both which could be associated with the relentless march of time as well. (Both of which were also used in Penguindrum to similar affect.)
To Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, this is mono no aware, and it is a fitting choice for a director who is interested in themes of adolescence and growing up.
In the first episode of Sarazanmai, when Kazuki abruptly awakens from his slumber and contemplates the meaning of connections with others and an incident that occurred in his past, we see the lights which mark the passage of time spiraling around the Skytree. Even when your mind wanders back to the past, time presses onwards.
During the otter cop dance sequence, however, we see the lights spin in a counter-clockwise direction. As if they they are trying to return to the past. Mabu’s heart is also made of mechanical clockwork…hmmm…
Another interesting moment is posted in an above picture when the Kappazombies descend from the sky, the “pure light” is removed from the illumination, and we no longer see the spiraling markers of time.
Time has stopped.

in case any of you were wondering how astronomically out of hand the unregulated exotic animal trade is in japan, here is ONE website’s catalogue of birds you can buy. it includes frankly every owl, hawk, turacos, and parrot imaginable including a NEW ZEALAND KEA which must have been poached

they also have a cafe/shop for you to go pet the birds

these birds are largely nocturnal, solitary, and cramming multiple different species in a small room with bright lights is completely disregarding their needs. this place is effectively a bird mill and there’s no way all the birds needs can be met, specifically that many parrots which are extremely intelligent birds and should not be pets either.
for the love of god DO NOT give patronage to owl cafes or any other exotic animal cafes, and stop sharing cute japanese viral videos of people with pet owls/otters/etc because this is the business you’re supporting
