(Eng sub) Kyuuso wa chiizu no yume wo miru/The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (2020)

Hello from this side of the pandemic! I subbed another queer film! Directed by Yukisada Isao, this was the 34th highest grossing film of 2020 in Japan making 7 billion yen (6.7 million usd) at the box office, which is no small feat considering it’s rated R-15 for containing graphic gay sex scenes. Anyway, please continue scrolling!

Summary: Ootomo Kyouichi (boyband idol Ookura Tadayoshi) is a wishy-washy man-whore with a seemingly successful life. This all changes when his wife hires a private detective (Narita Ryou) who turns out to be a man from his past. A whirlwind romance ensues.

Note: There is quite a bit of sex in this film so I probably wouldn’t watch it with my grandpa.

I know that many of you visit my blog for wholesome content, so please notice that this is not exactly a heartwarming film. No gays are buried or killed so you don’t have to worry about that, but these are some deeply flawed, quite terrible people. At the same time, there is something very human about their brand of terrible, whether it’s blaming others for your own actions or sabotaging your happiness because you’re addicted to feeling miserable.

My review of this film is that it feels like a long moody drive in the night and into dawn.

To watch, please make sure the video and the subtitle file are saved in the same folder under the same name, and the subs should play automatically at least on VLC or Media Player Classic.

anyway i just think it's cool that wonder woman continues to have such an unwavering hope and faith in humanity despite all the terrible things she's witnessed and despite everything they've done to her and taken from her and i swear if i see any of y'all complaining that the ending to ww84 was "too unrealistic" for having the nerve to be "happy" i will RIOT and here's why: the audience doesn't and shouldn't relate to Diana. she's too good and too moral and too righteous and she ALWAYS does the right thing (from an ethical perspective at least). the audience is supposed to relate to the two villains, both of whom have suffered at the hands of an unmerciful society. we can all relate to that feeling of the world being against us. in response, however, both lord and barbara make grave mistakes to get what they want and get revenge against the people who either wronged them or refused to believe in them. and in most superhero movies, we might be lucky enough to get a turnaround redemption at the very end before they die, but you RARELY see villains actually get to re-emerge into society and be given an actual second chance to better themselves. but that's what this film does. and it's beautiful, because the audience, who relates more to these villains than to the hero, sees the villains forgiven, unashamedly and undeservedly. but that's what both wonder woman movies have been about: it's not about what they deserve, it's about what you believe. and Diana absolutely refuses to compromise her belief in the goodness of people, even if they don't see it in themselves. that's what this film is saying: always believe the best in people and push them towards good, no matter the cost, because that's how we better ourselves and each other. and so if anyone wants to throw a pity party because they didn't get their usual dose of violent fantasy deaths and gritty cynicism then go cry into your game of thrones pillow and leave me alone.
