It is 14th Century England. Prince Thomas resides in Windsor Castle, finding very little fulfilment in his dominion over a small fraction of his father’s kingdom. But when an assassination attempt against the prince’s life is foiled by a mysterious young knight, Thomas finds his very existence thrown into turmoil as he must make a choice between love and duty.

BLAKEFIELD FIC RECS

okay as someone who’s regularly checked the blakefield ao3 tag since there were less than 20 fics on there, i feel a little qualified to put this list out there. ofc i’ve read more fics than this but really these are my favorites and i wanted to put them out there for anyone who hasnt read them. ik no one asked for this but i really can’t help myself so, enjoy :^)

NOTE: there are no major-character-death fics in here because i refuse to read those. also most of these are gonna be in canon universe. also i dont read a lot of fluff

Rain as a Plot Device - unfinished, 10k - really the fic that got me into blakefield, definitely the first fic from this fandom that i really liked. 

Twisted Remains - unfinished, 8.4k - jesussss the characterization on this is perfect. schofield is portrayed so realistically, blake and schofield’s relationship is portrayed so realistically.. i feel like this fandom has a thing for perfect happy endings which is great i like them too! but blake’s anger and definitely understandable reaction to schofield’s return is really a breath of fresh air

and the sights were as stark as my baby, and the cold cut as sharp as my baby - oneshot, 1.6k - OH!!! my god. this fic. the way OP uses rain and a sort of time element here is such a clever trick and u feel the tension. its from schofield’s POV but we learn about blake through schofield (duh) OP’s got such an interesting take on blake’s character, i wish this fandom would explore it more

Short Days Ago - unfinished, 7k - really not even romantic blakefield up to where OP’s written but still one of my favorite 1917 fics of all time… scho’s characterization is all there and blake has depth and their relationship is so interesting. love this exploration of them pre-canon. did i mention schofield’s characterization bc its perfect!

If Gold Rust, What Shall Iron Do? - unfinished, 29.9k - this is a medieval au! it’s also literally my favorite blakefield fic, ever. it’s so spectacularly written, it’s so romantic, the tension is so real, it makes me so emotional, ive read it like ten times over… it really is just like the best of the best. and op has a degree in medieval art history, i believe? they add all these nice touches that really immerse you in the world and its like. srsly this fic has kept me up awake at night. IDK read the fic now. its unfinished but OP’s probably updating in a couple days so dw about that!

all the very best of us string ourselves up for love - oneshot, 1.4k - really really bittersweet and amazingly written. there’s so much care in how these words are put together, OP did such a splendid job at capturing the gentleness of the moment and contrasting it with like … the horrors of war and period-typical homophobia and all that. it’s so beautiful please read it. 

ripeness and earth - oneshot, 2.7k - not really blakefield, but lauri x schofield’s wife, and it WORKS. you should read it if you haven’t, it’s in second person so you KNOW it’s good. if you need more convincing theres a biiiit of blakefield at the end but really you should read it for the lesbianism!

the way we look like animals - oneshot, 2.9k - very repressed and gentle. i like the idea of schofield not even having to say anything for blake to know whats going on, and them just understanding each other.
