Why I think now is the time to get excited for the new Lupin III!

While it is incredibly easy to fall into the trap of promotional hype material, the new cast designs for the live action Lupin film can’t help but excite me. The film had some vicious rumours. The one which struck me the hardest was a complete character revamp of Goemon Ishikawa XIII. It included an over-haul of his character that would result in not only changing his attire entirely, but also removing Zantetsuken from the picture. Fans weren’t happy and for good reason.

Thankfully, what was rumours can stay rumours as the pictures shown today certainly suggest otherwise. At a quick glance, you can recognise the character each actor and actress is portraying. It’s looking promising to say the least!

From the five promotional shots released today, it’s clear that the director and the production staff have paid very close attention to the details. The live action designs feel like a modern, updated Lupin, while still mimicking the animated versions perfectly.

Of course, facial features may not be quite as exaggerated as in the cartoon, but what do you expect? When translating animated characters into real life live action film, there is only so much you can do before things start to become ridiculous.

So, what did the production crew of the film create instead? Five newly designed members of the Lupin crew, that while have a cool new look, still posses all of their original design traits. From Lupin’s cheeky smile to Goemon’s determined pose, all five are pretty much spot on when compared to their animated selves. It’s clear we have a far more accurate representation of the Lupin franchise here than we did with the 1974 live action (which we still think is fantastic, by the way!)

Next we have the vehicles and props. Only a few have met the public eye so far, including this classic Fiat 500 which is currently on display at a convention in Osaka, Japan. Everything shown so far has been true to the series. Fujiko has motorcycle leathers and a killer motorbike while we can only assume Lupin, Jigen and Goemon will trundle along in the little Fiat.

While we cannot say much for the story or the acting itself, what we have so far is looking excellent. There are a million ways this production could go wrong, but at the same time this could well be a huge hit for Lupin in Japan.

It’s looking promising and we cannot wait to see more. The live action Lupin III film will be hitting Japanese cinemas on August 31st.

Lupin III VS Detective Conan The Movie coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on June 4th!

Catch up with Lupin, Conan and companies latest cross-over film on home video this summer.

The single disc HD Blu-ray edition will retail for 7,344 yen (a whopping $72 / £43) and will be distributed by Bop.

The single disc DVD version isn’t much cheaper, sitting at 6,264 yen ($62 / £37.) This is not anything usual however, as high priced DVD animated films and box sets are the norm in Japan.

The film did extremely well at box office, but how will the home video release fare?
