The other fun thing about shipping Marcille/Falin is that you might think it's going to be toxic because of Marcille's criminal background or Falin's repressed death wish, but then you read the supplementary material and it turns out the actual vector for potential toxicity is that Marcille has weird hangups about tallman culture's gender expressions that come out in ways that make Falin uncomfortable, and neither of them will ever have the vocabulary to unpack all that because they live in vaguely German Renaissance fantasy land.

Deryn closed her eyes, deciding to blazes with it all.

"I'm a girl."

When Deryn opened her eyes, the lady boffin was staring at her with no change in expression.

"Indeed," she said.

Deryn's mouth fell open. "You mean you.... Did you barking know?"

"I had no idea at all. But I make it a policy never to appear surprised." Dr. Barlow sighed, staring out the window. "Though on this occasion it is proving rather more demanding than usual. A girl, you say? And you're quite certain?"

1. This is a turning point, I think, where we see Dr. Barlow become less of an Imposing Authority Figure and instead become slightly more comedic. Once we've established that she likes Deryn enough to work with her, and she's not a potential threat to Deryn being discovered, she gets to be the butt of the occasional joke. And I love it!! It's very fun!!

2. Now I know it's meant to be that Dr. Barlow isn't used to being wrong, but also. Consider:

Deryn: I'm a girl

Dr. Barlow:

The thing about the anime. It's... like an AU. And when I think about it like that instead of disrupting canon, I can appreciate it for what it is.

I don't like a lot of the changes but I can accept them as Scott Westerfeld's best attempt to salvage the heart of the story within the incredibly restrictive screen-time constraints. And the studio's budget constraints on how many characters and beasties and background features they can animate.

But I am so, so happy to have gotten an adaptation at all. One of the most important pieces of media of my youth has come to life on screen, and now every time I re-read the books, I can imagine it that much more richly. We have more content to make fan art and fanfic about. And that's amazing.

Also, Deryn's suit? The best choice they made in the entire show.
