It’s Podcast Day and I can’t recommend the One Piece Podcast enough.

The people who work on it and record it every week are insanely dedicated and enthusiastic fans who truly love the series. Not only is it a weekly podcast, but their website OnePiecePodcast.com is constantly updated with news on the manga, anime, games and other events as well as commentary and editorials all written by a passionate staff who just want to discuss One Piece with other fans.

I’m one of the people who writes editorials for the website so this might sound like self promotion but if you are interested in in-depth analysis of the series as well as funny people please listen to the OPP.

Hey, I’m really interested in listening to the One Piece podcast from your recent post, but I can’t figure out which ones are the manga-related ones. They all seem to be about the episodes. Can you point me in the right direction?

Episode 387: The Good Ship Luffy-Pop

the episode number, 387, refers to the number of Podcast episodes they’ve done. it’s not in reference to the anime or the manga, it’s just how many episodes they’ve produced since they started in 2009

the Manga Recap covers the latest chapter of the manga. they go page by page (and a different person each page), reading through, discussing little details or translation notes, and stating their final thoughts on it at the end

they use the official Shonen Jump version of the chapter, where each “page” actually has 2 pages instead of 1

Today’s Sponsor is them spending a few minutes talking about their sponsor (which you can easily skip)

the Anime Recap goes over the latest episode that aired in Japan (this one being 711). they discuss the animation, things they liked or disliked about the episode, etc.

not listed is the Toonami Recap, which is where they go over the latest episode that aired on Toonami. sometimes if they’re busy, like this week, they’ll skip this one, and push it to a later episode

the Piece Together segment is a question corner segment, where they answer questions from emails they receive, from their sub-Reddit, and from Twitter (they check the #PieceTheTweet tag every week and usually give advanced notice for how much time you have left to ask something for that week)

oh, and each week, they usually have different people on the podcast episode, exceptions being the main hosts, Zach and Ed. that’s because they have 25 people on their staff. They also occasionally interview people from FUNimation, like the english voice actors or the directors who directed particular episodes, and a lot of other really interesting people.

also, they made a movie last year called The One Piece Podcast Goes To Japan, where they interview people who knew Oda (like one of his past editors, his highschool home room teacher, who is like a student counselor in Japan, and his old boss at the restaurant he used to work in) or people who work with the series (like an animation director or one of the actors in the One Piece Live Show). they go to Oda’s home town, to the Mugiwara store and a bunch of other places, showing off just how insanely popular the series is in Japan

they’re also in the middle of the Great One Piece Readthrough, where they’re rereading the WHOLE series, giving their general thoughts on the arcs, characters, stories, etc, and they have a spoilery segment at the end (called the Reverie) where they discuss the overarching impact of certain things in the arc (like the Poneglyph in Skypeia relating to Fishman Island, for example). if you want to avoid spoilers, you can skip that part, but it’s super interesting

and if you’re interested in the overarching plot of the series, you should totally read the One Piece Connection article that Zach Logan wrote (i also helped him with it a little, haha)
