Hello, Friends!
After spending the summer of 2024 digitizing items from the Schauffler College archive, I've decided to begin compiling a yearbook of sorts, by compiling images from The Bethlehem Bible Readers publication as well as the Schauffler Memorial.
My intent is to discover the earliest evidence of a woman of color attending this college-I believe it is possible that it may predate Otterbine College.
This college was founded in 1886 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Henry Schauffler and Clara Hobart (later Clara Shauffler), and was originally called The Slavic Bible Readers School and Home before becoming Bethlehem Bible & Missionary Training School, and later Schauffler Missionary Training School, and finally Schauffler College of Religious Education, Missionary Training, & Social Work, often shortened to Schauffler College of Missionary Training and Social Work. I intend to include people of note, including the presidents and principals, such as Mrs. Mary Mills, Mrs. Clapp, Mrs. Hart, and Dr. George Michaelides, as well as notable students.
Due to the nature of the work being done by and for the school, as well as the eras in which the content was created, some of it is bound to be controversial in nature. I will be tagging it as historical ick. Feel free to let me know if I've missed some ick.
