          in many ways, the two of them are eerily similar:     two grisha deprived too long of an opportunity to hone their powers, two grisha too old to begin their training, two grisha feeling like they don’t quite   belong.   he supposes he shouldn’t project too much on her, but it’s difficult, considering how out of place he feels.   (  he can’t imagine how much more difficult the extra pressure on her shoulders must make things.  )   ❛   I'm ready to   try again,   if you are?   ❜

just a heads up that it’ll be a rough month for activity!  writing my final  (and longest)  legal memo, volunteering for the public interest law project at school, and prepping for finals in december via outlines etc., on top of my normal work load.  I’ll be around, but a day that allows me to write is either an incredibly fortunate or deeply irresponsible one.

        their past shapes them. inej is just as much of the barrel as she is the caravans she grew up in — and perhaps more so, because it was here that she lost herself, and here that she found out who she was, all over again. she’d thought herself broken beyond repair, but that was not true; like mending a broken vase with gold, she became something new. stronger, and more sure of who she is—and that is in no small part to the friends she was so reluctant to make. break into an ice court together, and you’re bonded for life. they may have charted different courses for their lives, but inej can no more imagine her life without their little group than she can without her knives.

        she’s definitely glad for them here; who knows what lurks in the barrel’s shadows. it used to be her. but there is only one wraith.

          she understands just a little better than everyone else, jesper thinks.     sometimes her understanding can be just a little uncomfortable, when she hits a little too close to home  -  but he wouldn’t trade their friendship for all the kruge in the world  ...  even assuming they all didn’t   already   have that.   (  even if he’s placed his share in his father’s name, life at the van eck mansion certainly makes him feel like he’s got the world on a string, after all.  )   he doesn’t have to say it aloud for them   both   to know how much he misses her  -  but he certainly would not be too proud, should the moment present itself.   things are good, truly, and he would not change them for the world, except to have inej back.

          but she has a purpose, one that none of them has the right to tempt her away from.  jesper, for his part, would not dream of it  -  and besides, it’s nice enough to see her on the occasions she pulls into port.
