Knight Optical’s Polarizers for Head-mounted Displays
Knight Optical offer a complete range of Stock Polarizers for a range of applications that could be used for Head-mounted Displays. Our stock polarisers cover wavebands <0.2 to >2µm, we can also supply custom polariser options made to your complete custom specifications.
A head-mounted display (abbreviated to HMD), is a display device worn on the head or part of a helmet that has a small display optic in front of one (monocular HMD) or both eyes (binocular HMD) and can be used in applications within gaming, aviation, engineering and medicine. There are also optical head-mounted display (OHMD) which is a wearable display that can reflect projected images and allows a user to see through it (often used in conjunction with a Beamsplitters). Using polarisers for HMD helps to align the light onto a plane and reduce the scatter of the light reaching the users eye. By filtering out unpolarised light a polariser can convert a beam of light of undefined or mixed polarisation into a beam of well-defined polarised light, thus reducing the reflections and glare of the image being viewed by the user, whilst at the same time increasing the colour saturation. In doing so this allows the user of the HMD to have a more defined image of what is being displayed inform of them.

Injection Moulded Aspheric Lenses for Virtual Reality Headsets
Knight Optical’s injection moulded aspheric lenses can be found in Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) globally.
Virtual Reality headsets are typically know as HMDs consist of a pair of lenses which typically forms an image directly into the eyes of the wearer. The lenses shape and focus the picture for each eye thus creating a stereoscopic 3D image. This used in conjunction with an accelerometer in the system allows for an immersive experience, where the wearer can feel like they are part of another reality.
Optical aberration typically occur in common spherical singlet lenses which results in an image that appears distorted. Consequently HMD manufacturers have started to incorporate aspherical lenses which can replace multiple element systems. Aspheric lenses allows a single component lens to collimate or focus highly divergent rays, potentially replacing a multi-lens system.
Knight Optical offers injection moulded aspherics from a range of visible materials including PMMA, polycarbonate, polystyrene and Lexan. This makes for a quality, cost effective product which can be provided in high volumes.
 Typical specs:
Material:                             PMMA, Polycarbonate, Polystyrene and Lexan Diameter:                           Up to 100mm dia +0, -0.02mm Surface Quality:               < 80-50 scratch/dig Coating:                               AR/AR 400-700nm Ravg <0.5%
Our Aspheric lenses are checked for quality in our state-of-the-art Metrology laboratory using equipment from Trioptics, Varian and Starret allowing us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.

Colour Glass Filters for CMOS sensors
CMOS sensors are used within commercial grade Digital SLR cameras as a replacement for the more expensive CCD. These CMOS sensors are extremely sensitive to IR light, which can lead to discolouration. IR cut filters are used to block the IR light, meaning that photographs are taken with life-like colours. Colour Glass Filters can be used in variations of Bandpass, Long pass and Short pass, depending on which wavelengths of light need to be blocked resulting in different key areas being more easily distinguished.
Knight Optical offers Colour Glass and IR cut filters for such an application, with a wide range of band widths and cut on/off wavelengths. As above these are available as Bandpass, Long pass or Short pass filters and we can also offer customised filters with coatings specific to the wavelength of your choice.

Knight Optical announces increase in production capabilities of custom  Glass & Moulded Polymer Aspheric Lenses for Weapon Sights
Custom Moulded Aspheric Lenses and polished BK7 lenses are use within Weapon sights.
Our aspheric lenses are used to correct optical aberrations (where the converging light from a lens does not have a common focal point, resulting in a distorted image) in laser focusing and imaging. Traditional spherical lenses cannot collimate light effectively and even smallest of angles of incidence can produce aberrations.
This can mean that several combined optical components may be required to get the desired result. The non-spherical surface of an aspheric lens allows a single component to effectively focus or collimate even highly divergent emissions, potentially replacing a multi-lens system with a single aspheric lens. Saving weight and space.
Therefore Aspheric Lenses that are moulded are ideal for use within Gun Sights, Military Scopes, Laser Holographics, and Laser Range finding applications.
For more information
For prototyping or smaller volumes. Diamond turned manufacturing of lenses is also available.
Knight Optical are an ISO 9001 UKAS certified company.  All our Lenses are fully inspected on their quality in our state-of-the-art Metrology laboratory, using our Trioptics Optispheric, and Starrett AV300. This allows us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.

Moulded Optics for UV Disinfection Systems
Knight Optical offers a range of precision optical components for use in UV Disinfection System applications. The most common usage of such systems is for water purification. This is harnessing specific wavelengths of a UV lamp which is then emitted and used as a germicide to cleanse water of pathogens such as e. coli, staphylococcus aureus and salmonella.
One such component are the quartz tubes which can be moulded or generated from a furnace. These tubes are typically used to house the UV lamps. This prevents the UV lamp from being exposed which in turn extends the longevity of the lamps and means that the lamps can be used under higher pressures. These lamps and tubes can also be used with UV eflectors which are light reflectors with a U channel or groove means that light which would normally be shined backwards is now harnessed in the correct direction.
Knight Optical provides tubes which are typically produced from quartz, borosilicate, float glass, Liba 2000, amongst other materials. This choice of material is down to its ability to withstand thermal stresses and those that can offer high transmission values.
All of Knight Optical’s tubes are custom produced, ensuring all products are bespoke and fully compliant to the customer’s requirements.
Typical specs:
Material: Quartz, borosilicate, float glass, Liba 2000
Dimensions: +/-0.25 mm
Surface quality: <60-40 scratch/dig

Knight Optical's Stock Barium fluoride windows
Barium Fluoride (BaF₂) is a crystalline compound of barium and fluoride used in optical applications in the NIR, VIS and MWIR spectrums. Barium Fluoride is resistant to high energy radiation, performing well in dry temperatures up to 800°C, but transmission in the Vacuum UV (VUV) degrades over time in a moist atmosphere and the material is susceptible to water corrosion at 500°C.
Barium Fluoride is ideal for use as a VUV window where high radiation resistance is required from, for example, gamma and x-ray. Other applications include thermography and medical thermology equipment, laser, and astronomy.
Barium Fluoride transmits at over 90% between the 0.2-10μm spectrum beyond which transmission decreases, reaching 0% at about 0.18µm and 14µm. It is a relatively soft material with a hardness of HK82, and can be BBAR coated for use in the 0.8-2.5µm, 3.0-5.0µm and 1.0-5.0 ranges.
Knight Optical supply a range of quality BaF₂ windows available between 13mm diameter to 38mm diameter direct from stock  (or custom if required) . Our stock windows may be resized at short notice to fit customer's individual requirements.

Custom Domes for Protective Housing for CCTV Cameras
Knight Optical has successfully launched a range of Stock Optical Domes for protective housing for CCTV Camera Systems, where protection of electronic sensor systems from harsh liquid and gas environments is essential.
A dome is essentially a window that has two parallel curves faces. Our domes are high quality with good form error polished faces to ensure high clarity and transmission in the Visible and NIR spectrums allowing for accurate measurement.
Capabilities: Domes are readily mountable, optically clear and manufactured to a high standard. Available from 5mm to 200mm in diameter and 0.25 to 10mm in thickness offering high transmission and extreme toughness for harsh environments. Typical materials: As well as fused silica, domes can be made in any of the additional materials:
BK7
PMMA Acrylic
Quartz
Sapphire
Germanium
Silicon
All our domes are checked for quality in our state-of-the-art Metrology laboratory using equipment from Trioptics, Varian and Starret allowing us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.
