Proofread your TOK essay
Statistics reveals that the maximum number of students counting to almost 47% bag a C grade in TOK with a range between 11 and 16 points, indicating a good scope of improvement.
Avoid generalization
Narrow down your focus in the introduction
Common mistake
Some of you make a very common mistake generalising your introduction in the first instance till you reach the end. That’s wrong! To score well you need to keep in mind that your introduction is something which makes or breaks.
BANG ON
Your introduction should have two main components-your chosen AOKs and disciplines, your arguments on claims and counterclaims with the knowledge problems clearly stated.
Linking the titles coherently
Common mistake
Remember, opening every paragraph is really like unfurling a theatre curtain. Often you make mistakes by not showing your scenes precisely- in your TOK language it’s kind of not linking your first line of body paragraphs with your ‘essay title’.
What’s the RIGHT APPROACH
Your aim should be to make your essay title relevant and coherent. Ask yourself, “How can I do that?”
You can only do it iff your body para opening sentences have a coherent link with all the keywords of your relevant essay title.
Always remember, the more precise you are with the use of key points in the opening sentences, the more structured your essay is.
Mistakes often overlooked
Note that here we are talking of exploring your essay title very intricately. Often you would find that the title has keywords or key concepts which are connected. Explore them holistically, not individually. Spin the thread with the titles of your body text and the holistic essay title.
Using fine-tunes
Common mistake
You may have a common tendency to generalize the topic sentences with the use of quotes or paraphrases.
What’s TO BE DONE
Fine-tune your topic sentences with precision to exactly focus on the chosen AOKs and disciplines.

International Baccalaureate, the feather in its cap as the ‘Best Education Brand 2020’
It’s just irresistible for me but pen down my Happy Morning Moments – ‘Coffee with IB’.
The minute I read the news I cheered up realizing that what I’ve been believing all this while is continuously being proved ‘RIGHT’!
The International Baccalaureate (IB), being recognized as the best education brand 2020 by The Economic Times, clearly evinces IB’s relentless support in bolstering the dynamic education sector of India, which is one of the world’s youngest nations. No wonders over a period of one year, the IB schools have doubled in India.
As an educator I always felt that IB is not just a curriculum, it’s way beyond! It’s a real-life lesson. What mesmerizes me is the unique mission and vision of IB, which aims to create caring, empathetic, life-long, self-regulated learners who have a sense of belongingness for the world.
The Approaches to Teaching and Learning, popularly called the IB’s ATL, opens up a horizon of unravelled thoughts before you, with the belief- ‘there is no point in gobbling standardized concepts without their practical implementation’. Reiterating on constant problem-solving and exploring knowledge intensely than ‘surface learning just for aiming some good grades’, adorns IB with the natural and most intricately woven art of deep learning and divergent thinking.
Starting from the construction of knowledge through metacognition, to the art of collaborative planning, assimilation, synthesis, application, and reflection help students climb up the learning ladder from lower to higher order thinking skills. Moreover, inculcation of self-management skills like organizational and affective skills prepare the students to face the world with independence, confidence, and self-motivation.
The comprehensive analytical subject report of IB gives students an extra mileage to critically evaluate their own performance with the spirit of ‘not conquering the distance in running, but yourself’. (Michael D’Aulerio).
The IB learners get to inculcate certain attitudes in their personality like appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, curiosity, creativity, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect, and tolerance which chisel them to be avid inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, principled, open-minded, communicators, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective-the IB learner’s profile.
When we get to experience this curriculum, automatically the spirit of international-mindedness gets infused in our thinking genes. That’s where we get to instil a sense of tolerance for all the diverse cultures by reducing ethnocentricity.
Beyond the pedagogy and the lessons in the classroom, it is the inculcation of the unbeatable growth mind set which sets the IB learners apart from the rest by preparing them to run the marathon with grit and endurance. This is where Sev7n, the IB resource centre, feels honoured to motivate students in handling IB with expertise, and create content to expose the education cohort to ‘a whole new mind of learning lessons of life’.

Math, Physics, and Psychology Syllabus.
The IB has done away with the previous system entirely and comes up with two new courses of Math, both for SL and HL. These are Math AA (Mathematics: analysis and approaches) and Math AI (Mathematics: applications and interpretations). Math AA focuses on algebraic methods, while Math AI integrates technology with its focus on statistics and modeling. The purpose of improvisation in the IBDP Math syllabus is to open up more career opportunities for the students who have a deep passion for Math and also equipped with critical and analytical skills with a problem-solving ability both in the real and abstract worlds.
Physics
IBDP Physics syllabus, as a part of the Nature of Sciences (NOS) in Group 4 of the IBDP, is the most fundamental of the experimental sciences, as it seeks to explain the universe itself from the smallest atomic particle to the inter-galaxy distances. The study involves hands-on activities in the classroom or in the field. Integrating natural phenomena and secondary data sources, the students are able to investigate, research, collect data, improvise results, analyze, critique, and reflect. Observations with imagination take this discipline to a new dimension- the art of Imagineering and this is where in a recent analysis it comes under the study of STEAM instead of STEM.
Psychology
Psychology is a very rigorous structured study of mental processes and behavior. It is trans-disciplinary, adaptive to changes, can encounter challenges, and hence is pretty dynamic.
The relation between the approaches and areas helps in analyzing the key factors underpinning the mental process and diverse behavior. The approaches are Biological, Cognitive, and Socio-cultural approaches to the understanding of behavior. These approaches are applied in the areas or options of study which are Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Health Psychology, and Psychology in Relationships.

Common mistakes to avoid while drafting an EE in IBDP Psychology-Max possible mark 34
Your RQ makes or breaks (Focus and method -Assessment Criterion A: Max possible mark 6)
Adopt a filter funnel technique while brainstorming on your research question (RQ). Choose a broad concept first and then start narrowing it down with specific case studies. This approach is to be adopted at the very first stage of your essay. At times the RQ happens to be explicated at a later stage-which is a bad idea though!
Is your knowledge and understanding comprehensive? (Knowledge and Understanding- Assessment Criterion B: Max possible mark 6)
When you aim to prove the solidity of your understanding from the knowledge you have gathered, be wise enough to unpack all the key concepts with examples. Use your resources and evidences with precision so that it’s easy for the examiner to gauge how you have substantiated and bolstered your knowledge with cogent evidential support
Have you thought critically? (Critical thinking- Assessment Criterion C: Max possible mark 12)
Here, the catch is you have to thread your individual concepts used with relevant evidences, and extract the juice of all your analysis to spin your final thread of conclusion. What I mean to say is your conclusion should not bring in any evidence which is asymmetrical or new by its nature. All your prior examples should be intertwined in the conclusion. Don’t use frequent personal examples which are more of personal accounts and not facts or research. Remember, anecdotes cannot be supported by facts. They are personal claims.
In a nutshell, tie up the threads of correlated factual evidences in the conclusion to prove that you have really analysed the concept well!
Have you presented it well? (Presentation- Assessment Criterion D: Max possible mark 4)
Presentation is the flesh you put on the skeletal framework. Prove that you have read, comprehended, analysed, evaluated and critiqued your essay well.
Reflection matters (Engagement- Assessment Criterion E: Max possible mark 6)
This criterion really checks your involvement and engagement with your essay. How well you have reflected upon while drawing your conclusion and how rationally you have made your decisions matter a lot! Remember, in order to reflect well you’ve to ensure that your prior criteria have been met.

Chemistry is Everywhere
Everything you hear, see, smell, taste, and touch involves chemistry and chemicals (matter). And hearing, seeing, tasting, and touching all involve intricate series of chemical reactions and interactions in your body. With such an enormous range of topics, it is essential to know about chemistry at some level to understand the world around us.
Matter-it’s there in your daily life
In more formal terms chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it can undergo. Chemists sometimes refer to matter as ‘stuff’, and indeed so it is. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Which is to say, anything you can touch or hold. Common usage might have us believe that ‘chemicals’ are just those substances in laboratories or something that is not a natural substance. Far from it, chemists believe that everything is made of chemicals. In household everybody understands like Plastics, Stainless Steel, Silver and Gold in Metallic form which everyone has attraction. Plastic ATM card is used to buy the fancy Gold and Silver by people across the globe.
Matter-looks simple!
Although there are countless types of matter all around us, this complexity is composed of various combinations of some 100 chemical elements. The names of some of these elements will be familiar to almost everyone. Elements such as hydrogen, chlorine, silver, gold and copper are part of our everyday knowledge. Far fewer people have heard of selenium or rubidium or hassium.
The wonder of Chemistry
Nevertheless, all matter is composed of various combinations of these basic elements. The wonder of chemistry is that when these basic particles are combined, they make something new and unique. Consider the element sodium. It is a soft, silvery metal. It reacts violently with water, giving off hydrogen gas and enough heat to make the hydrogen explode. Nasty ‘stuff’. Also consider chlorine, a green gas when at room temperature. It is very caustic and choking, and is nasty enough that it was used as a horrible chemical gas weapon in the last century. So what kind of horrible mess is produced when sodium and chlorine are combined? Nothing more than sodium chloride, common table salt. Table salt does not explode in water or choke us; rather, it is a common additive for foods we eat every day. Sugar and Sweet which everyone takes and loves is a part of life. The two common things salt and sugar if taken beyond a threshold leads to people have BP and Diabetics and other complications.
And so it is with chemistry, understanding the basic properties of matter and learning how to predict and explain how they change when they react to form new substances is what chemistry and chemists are all about.
Not limited to beakers and labs
Chemistry is not limited to beakers and laboratories. It is all around us, and the better we know chemistry, the better we know our world.
The chemistry of a tutor and student
A good chemistry between the teacher and the students can make the journey of learning chemistry and joyful experience. I would walk hand in hand with you in this journey of learning chemistry.
