Still upset about that finale tbh!! I was willing to believe izzy could survive!!! He survived having his leg cut off and was up walking in unrealistic time and guess what I didn't care!!! Ed gets hit by a cannon ball and presumably goes days without food/water and i didnt think twice!!! Stede is pinned to the mast with a stab wound and is totally fine next episode but sure I could run with that
I want a happy ending and I'm willing to suspend my disbelief to get it. So why couldn't we have a miraculous recovery one more time?
#ofmd s2 spoilers#it would have fit the show#the first few episodes gave us our angst to balance the comedy#and i was so ready for us to continue the growth and recovery part of the story#but guess we're not getting that !!!!!!

cringe to say perhaps but putting aside all the (thoughtful, well-reasoned, sensitive) meta about why the optics are bad: it just makes me sad. yes i am biased. yes he was my favorite. i liked him a lot and he was maimed and hurt and died in a way no one else did. his blood was splashed all over that ship. not even touching what it does to his story or ed's and speaking purely subjectively it just makes me so so sad.
#ofmd s2 spoilers#agree#especially don't like that up to that point I really felt like if a character was working towards the goals of the revenge crew#they had a sort of plot armour#and things just seemed to work out for them (like: every stede scene...roach surviving a fall from the mast...zhang saving the crew)#and those working against the crew were punished like the badmintons and calico jack#so by all rights izzy should have survived#idk it really felt like the rules that back the ofmd universe up to now were broken and for no real payoff#i mean ed survives a cannonball to the head and honestly i didnt care i was so willing to suspend my disbelief if it gave us a happy ending!#not whatever that was

Fuck that shit, I am beyond words at how cruel this particular choice feels to me. It feels like a betrayal. Izzy was on the road to healing but instead of being allowed to heal he was killed off for... what? Ed's closure? Because Izzy is ready to die?
It feels like an insult, especially because no one seemed to grieve? It was just suddenly light-hearted again? AND WHY THE FUCK WAS HE BURIED ON LAND
I wish Izzy was given the ending he deserved instead of this unsatisfying finale.

again i'm even more irritated because i genuinely just think the finale was bad. unpopular but i could live with izzy dying personally because even though it felt profoundly Bad as a choice if it had like been compelling in any way i could have been like alright not a fan but let's see where they're going with it. i don't have like... deep-seated real grief over this myself but even so... to me it was just jarring, lazy, pointless writing.
not to mention i don't think any of the other characters were served well by the finale either- like i'm an Ed Fan, have been interested in his arc all season and sympathetic as hell towards him, but i feel like his "development" in this ep was so sideways and awkward and basically made him an idiot who was actually like, wrong to want to focus on things other than the job he got good at as a way to survive, and to not even give him mainpain after a contrived thing meant to give him manpain happened is mind boggling to me.
the sudden tone upswing after the funeral felt sort of insulting to the other characters too, like, nobody was like... sad? nobody's worldview was rocked fundamentally? IDK! i think this show has always suffered a little from the need to be a COMEDY as opposed to, say, a dramedy or an emotionally dense and complicated romance with a sense of humor, it felt like sort of a weird, inappropriate status quo reset just out of "not sure if we'll get renewed" anxiety + this reflexive need to lighten the mood after beats that would be better served by room to breathe that i thought this show was usually decent at avoiding.... MAN. it's a bad one
#YES#this whole episode felt like the reveal was going to be that everything was another ed-puragtory scene#the vibes were just off#like a bad parody episode :/#ofmd s2 spoilers

TAIKA WAITITI as Blackbeard & CON O'NEILL as Izzy Hands in OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH (2022— ) Episode 2.08
#ofmd s2 spoilers#why did it feel like con was acting in a drama and everyone else was stuck in comedy land ?#like going from this to burial to wedding !! just felt tonally awful#and i kept wanting it to be a deliberate show choice but idk it just felt cheap 🤷🏻♀️#what a cheap death for such a great character (im so mad)

Ed never apologised to him. Just a shitty muttered sorryaboutyourleg without even LOOKING at him, and a bullshit "i should apologise" without any follow through.
Izzy in the arms of the man who repeatedly and deliberately mutilated him at least three times before causing him to lose a fucking limb, saying he's sorry for encouraging Ed to be Blackbeard, and Ed couldn't even muster up the balls to say that perhaps he shouldn't have purposefully physically chopped bits from izzy's body on multiple occasions??
And then for Ed to just shrug and say "what a guy" and move on with his life with Stede without a backwards glance? Where's the fucking responsibility, Ed? Where's the reflection? Where are the fucking consequences for Ed?
This is absolute bullshit and i am so numb with shock that the writers could do this to us.
#ofmd s2 spoilers#what was all that!!!#they did izzy dirty but also ed#like how did we move from the ep 1 2 3 emotions to whatever that was#ed came across as emotionless in those last scenes like i genuinely cant believe it what a letdown

I could write a 10 page essay with Chicago referencing about how this finale and the last few episodes have really thrown a great show down the toilet. Talking points include:
A character death after such a great redemption arc that was rushed to fit a 30 minute episode slot.
The whole crew just feeling nothing after said death and moving on to attend a wedding as if they didn’t make him a whole new fucking leg in episode 4 to show they care about him.
Stede gets to be an asshole last episode and Ed and Izzy mention at great length about how his behaviour isn’t okay, and they don’t touch on that at all in the finale? Stede gets to be a little cunt and no one bats an eye?
Bit of a Han Solo “I love you/I know” moment with Gentlebeard which threw me off ngl
The main antagonist of this season was a guy who was in episode one for no more than 5 minutes and was caught lacking.
Said antagonist does not make a return until episode 6 to plot revenge - I feel like that would be fine if there weren’t only 2 episodes after that.
He’s a pirate and you gave him a LAND BURIAL.
safe space ship my fucking ass
I’m fine.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with the characters and everything to do with the writing, but is anyone else perturbed by the fact that all of them just... stood there, while Izzy was dying?? Like, the people who cut off his leg and saved his life, then made him a new one when they saw how much he was struggling??
Why were they all like, "Aww man, Izzy's shot, nothing we can do about that"???
#ofmd s2 spoilers#i truly thought the whole episode was going to be some weird fever dream sequence#the pacing was so off#and the crew reactions were so strange and bland like wtf#im so mad rn

you know what I find interesting about stede's fight with zheng in the bar? it mirrors the fight stede had with izzy in the first season. in the way that stede is standing in izzy's place, he harbours the same feelings.
before the fight we see izzy approach stede and try to console him. he's saying that he understands how stede feels after ed left again, he says that he knows that ed is a complicated man. they sure as hell cope with their 'ed situations' differently but on the fundamental level it's the same type of being brokenhearted.
and then zheng does the same thing that stede did to izzy: she takes his crew, family. and stede reacts in the same way, he challenges her to a duel.
during the fight we see that the camera pans to izzy a few times and we see his thoughts. that it's a bad idea, that it's futile. but we are also left with a notion that this is what has to happen - stede has to lose in order to realize where he's been wrong and accept it later on. izzy knows that and despite the fact that he could step in he doesn't. but he stays at stede's side when the crew sides with zheng. he fucking stays.

Izzy still commanding such fear and respect in Spanish Jackie’s is so good. Like even with everyone fawning over Stede and either not recognizing or not caring about Blackbeard anymore, they all still immediately recognize and defer to whatever Izzy says. He’s forever THE pirate.
#ofmd s2#izzy hands#yess appreciating that the more izzy embraces being part of the crew#the more we get to see how good he is at what he does
