I love and appreciate how Mulder can never bring himself to speak poorly of Scully even when she's been blatantly rude, instead explaining that she's usually "rigid in a wonderful way"

Thinking about the parallels between Scully's confession in Revelations and her conversation with the therapist in Irresistible:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both scenes, she admits, glassy-eyed, that she feels unable to speak about her feelings with Mulder... and this deeply upsets her.
Despite her devoutly skeptical persona, her high emotional walls, and the countless things they debate and disagree on, deep down, Scully hates feeling other to him. There's a real loneliness in both of these scenes.
As much as Mulder relies on Scully to be truly known (his human credential, as DD puts it), she relies on him in much the same way: to be the one person to see her through her thick shell, to accept her contradictions, to know her own hurt, fears, and loneliness. She wants that very badly.
So it crushes her when he can't understand her.

the difference in Mulder's demeanor when his own life is in jeopardy versus when Scully's life is in danger is honestly hilarious. He will move heaven and earth for this woman's safety meanwhile he's so nonchalant about potentially being blown up by a bomb
Mulder will be trapped in a train car with a bomb and an assassin and still thinking of lines to amuse Scully

Oubliette is a very compelling and emotional Mulder-centric episode because it understands that
Mulder is a man who can care so deeply it goes beyond the point of reason
his care comes from a place of deep, crushing sadness that hasn’t healed and probably never will

The reason Scully is (understandably) scared here is because a prison guard had just grabbed her in the dark and held her to tell her about “the list” that the episode circles around.
Notably, the next day, we see that Mulder also knows about the list, meaning that at some point off screen, Scully had to have told him that a man had attacked her AND WE DIDNT GET TO SEE HIS RESPONSE TO THIS
This small moment is interesting to me because not only is it uncommon to see Scully a little shaken during an investigation, but also because it shows that Mulder can tell when she's scared, despite her remaining completely composed. He doesn't protest or even question why she wants to leave—he can tell in the way she won't meet his eyes, her shy, non-confrontational phrasing "Mulder, I'm ready to go now," (a typical Scully would say something like "Let's go, Mulder,") that she's a little frightened. He probably could tell before she even said anything.
