"Squawk!" [ It's been too quiet lately! Who wants to hear embarrassing stories from Nimbra's childhood? ]

ā itās your life. do something for yourself for once, will you ? ā
".. you talk like I never do," which, truthfully, was a fair assumption on Asumyn's part-- but it wasn't as though Nimbra would willingly admit that. "I just do things in my own way. It's hard for me to sit still most of the time."
".. there's more important things to be worried about right now, anyway. I can't rest until they're taken care of." To get to the bottom of what was going on at present.. that was what she wanted, regardless if anyone thought it was beneficial to her wellbeing. Besides, to ask the rest of the group to accompany her was already making Nimbra feel more selfish than she could put into words.

"When has pissing people off ever stopped you from doing something?" a smile felt foreign on her face, and yet, Scalde was able to pull one out from her; even if it only lasted a moment. Still, paired with the huff of air that left her, sounding like a chuckle, it was the most at east Nimbra had felt in what seemed like days.
.. she wondered how long that would last.
"Who knows. Things like that attract thrill seekers, I suppose-- maybe that's how they get most of their clientele. Though I think I've had enough of haunted places for the rest of my lifetime.." As they reached the closet, Nimbra chose to open the door; revealing rows upon towels, sheets, and various other linens. She grabbed a couple of sheets in her arms, leaving Scalde to do the same if she wished. Crow flew in, perching on a shelf and throwing a face cloth over his head.
"..."
"Is that all that's making you uneasy? Or.." it was the first moment they'd had alone since she and the others got back from Philip's tower.. if Scalde didn't want to elaborate, Nimbra wouldn't push; but.. she felt it would be wrong not to at least check in on her. ".. what I mean to say, is.. are you alright."
"Ha!" Scalde laughs, resting her arm on Nimbra's shoulder affectionately. "I'm not opposed, but I'm not sure the inn would love that idea." She puts her other hand in her pocket, glancing around.
"I don't know why this is what they decided to keep." As they move toward the linen closet, she glances back at one of the wooden mannequins. "Seems a weird aesthetic for a hotel. No wonder there's rumours about this place being haunted."

Nimbra scoffed at that, but despite her words, the cadence of her voice was enough to prove that she was being lighthearted. "I'll be impressed if you can ever pull it off."
Asumyn's sudden presence on the bed did seem to catch her off guard a little bit, however; blinking as her body followed the bounce of the mattress. Crow was happy to receive some scratches, tilting his head up towards the triton's nice long claws.
"It does, but it's not enough to completely cover your presence. It's all dependent on how you carry yourself-- how you shift your weight across your feet, avoiding as much noise as you possibly can. You were born to be one with water-- it's natural for you to be silent as you move through it. You just have to find a way to treat the land the same."
Momentarily, the tiefling grew silent; raising a few fingers to her chin in thought. It didn't take long for a smile to slowly creep across her features, however; just ever so slightly curling the corners of her mouth.
"Showing you how to move up here is fine.. but it's better if you have an example," turning her attention to her friend, the same expression stayed on Nimbra's face. "We could start with something small, let's say.. taking some sweets from the kitchen. That is, if you're brave enough."
Asumyn pouts, stepping around the wardrobe into Nimbra's full view. She folds her arms, and leans against the wardrobe. "I'm doing my best, man. Just once, I wanna sneak-hug you."
Oh, but the offer of learning from her rogue friend was tempting! Her spine straightens and her finned ears perk, and Asumyn almost skips over to Nimbra's bed and hops on beside her.
"Really? I'd love that! I'm better at it in the water, obviously, but still not great." She reaches up to gently scratch at the top of Crow's head. "And you'd think forgoing shoes would give me points, but like, I guess not?"

".. not just you. They're definitely creepy." They reminded Nimbra of something she'd seen when they were stuck in the school.. perhaps an added reason as to why she seemed so tense. Her eyes glanced them over quickly, before turning her attention to a linen closet at the end of the hall.
"There's probably something in there we could cover them with, to give you peace of mind. Unless you want to turn them into fire wood." She was joking. Mostly.
"Is it just me, or are these things seriously creepy?" Scalde pokes one of the mannequins in the hall outside of her room. Yeesh.
"I know this used to be a boutique or something, but they, uh. Could have kept the outfits and not the creepy wooden dolls. I feel like I'm being watched."

".. was that your attempt at sneaking up on me? I heard you coming up the stairs about a minute ago," while Asumyn wasn't in plain view, it was clear to the rogue where she was currently hiding-- just behind the wardrobe closest to their inn room door. The opalescent strands of hair sticking out from around the corner certainly weren't helping her keep her cover, either.
"I could teach you how to properly do that, you know.." shifting on her bed, Crow hopped from the headrest until he nestled on her shoulder. ".. unless you wanted something else."
@asumyn

"Not that I'm really into shopping, but.. .. maybe we can go to Fantasy Hot Topic sometime. Might be fun. They're the one who made dress shopping bearable that one time, anyway."
".. wonder if I could pick them up by the scruff again when they're not looking."

In a quiet moment, as everyone rushes back to the inn to dry off, Nimbra slinks off out of everybody's sights.
Crow shakes the water off his feathers as he remains perched on her shoulder, watching the tiefling curiously. She doesn't seem bothered by her drenched clothes, nor affected by the water turning her skin cold. Hair sticks to her face, covering her scar, obscuring the look in her eyes. She seems composed in one moment-- a vacant, blank stare practically boring through the window she manages to find herself next to.
But in the next, Nimbra's body goes limp; crashing against the wall until she crumples into a heap on the window bench. Crow frets, immediately; jumping slightly on her shoulder, tugging on her braid, pecking at her head.
Her hand raises, bunched against her brow as the other slams against the cushion; temptation begging her to rip it apart. Her nails dig into her gloves, threatening to draw blood into her palm as her shoulders tremble; biting down so hard on her lip that she could split it in any second.
But she does not weep.
The only moisture on her face is that of the rain-- a reminder of what had just transpired, of what else she had learned that day. She didn't even have time to process what she had learned about the death of her parents before something else was thrown at her-- rage engulfing her entire being and threatening to pull her under.
There was never a time where she wasn't suspicious of Alastor, of what they tried to accomplish in the shadows, far beyond her or anyone's sights.. but to do this.. to be apart of the very group that worshiped the ground Lilith walked on..
Why would they want this? Why would Aelius? If he hadn't tried to tell her, if she had never heard the obscurity in his words, perhaps she wouldn't have been reacting like this now.. but it felt too obvious at this point.
The new base of operations being built in Mistwind. The fact that Marcia knew their names. Even if they never acted as Abbadon, did that make them any better than the rest of their followers?
Crow's insistence eventually coaxes Nimbra into easing out of her rage; quiet, shallow breaths echoing through her ribcage as she eventually reaches up to comfort her companion. As her head lifts, it's clear to see that that vacant expression is no more; exhaustion and utter heartbreak coursing through the lines on her face.
"Idiots.. you god damn fools.."
"What have you done?"

"Can you stand?" from Aelius :3
"I-- I'm fine."
It takes the tiefling longer than she would have liked, but eventually, Nimbra raises off of her knees from the ground; wiping at a fresh trail of blood dripping from her lip. They'd been training for what felt like days at this point; her entire body shaking as she raised both of her hands again, taking the stance Aelius had taught her.
He looked at her with such sympathy in his eyes as she did, as if he wanted to run to her side to catch her if her knees buckled. It was different from the way Alastor ever looked at her. Maybe it was because theirs never met her own; they were always looking past her, into a space far beyond her grasp. She didn't hold that against them, but not even their voice held the same cadence that Aelius' did. He worried for her. He wanted her to get stronger. He felt pain when she did.
But this was nothing compared to what she had endured before they took her in. She could take this, again, and again, and again, until she felt nothing at all.
She had no other choice.
Grounding herself, the tiefling took a deep breath; ignoring the pain in her side as she held Aelius in the reds of her vision.
"Come at me again. I can take it."
#asks;#memes;#DEAD AND DYING FOREVER#take a teenage nimbra#aelius dunked her into bed after this probably lmao

PROTECTIVE PROMPTS
"Are you alright?"
"Did they hurt you?"
"Can you stand?"
"They won't get away with this."
"No one's ever going to hurt you again. I promise."
"Sorry it took so long to find you."
"Don't say you're fine. There are bruises all over you!"
"Sweetheart, I need you to open your eyes for me."
"Here. Drink this. You're dehydrated."
"Tell me the last thing you remember."
"You look like you haven't slept in days."
"I'll kill them for doing this to you."
"Did they just push you?"
"All that matters is I'm here now and we're together."
"I don't care that I'm in danger. It's you that I'm worried about."
"No one's going to find us here. We're safe."
"Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere."
"If he touches you again, I'll kill him."
"I trust you ... but I don't trust them with you."
"I'm not going anywhere."
"I'll be right behind you."
"Whatever happens, don't let go of my hand."
"Shh, it's just me."
"Did they lock you in here?"
"Did they fucking touch you?"
"If anyone comes through that door to hurt you, I'll deal with it."

š« (Nimbra needs this)
It was always.. somewhat of a surprise when Pearls hugged her like this. Her little arms, desperately trying to hold on with everything she had; her tiny hands, balling up Nimbra's cloak between her fingers and gripping on so tightly. As if she believed Nimbra would protect her, that she was safe by her side, always.
Even though Nimbra had failed Pearls so terribly. Even though, by all accounts, Pearls should have hated her. At the very least, the tiefling would not have blamed her for harbouring feelings like that; she'd failed to do the one thing she was supposed to, after all. The very same thing she had once promised Kay, before Jim's heart was ripped out of his chest.
Lio's death wasn't something she could fix. Even though she reached for him, held onto his shirt for dear life, his spirit didn't cling to her like Jim's did. She wondered if it was because she was never kind enough to him. Maybe if she had been, if she tried to understand him more sooner.. would things be different? Would he still be here, making sure his daughter was safe of his own accord?
...
But thinking like that wasn't good for either of them. Even if Nimbra kept her insecurities and guilt to herself, showing any signs of uncertainty around Pearls would only make what trust she had in Nimbra wane; and that was the last thing she would ever want.
She couldn't bring Antolio back, no.. but she could keep the promise she made to him. Her arms circling Pearls' tiny frame, pulling her into her side. With every last force of her life, she would protect this girl, and never allow anything to harm her again. Whatever she needed, whenever she needed space, Nimbra would always respect what was asked of her; she would never tell her not to mourn, or be angry at the world for taking away someone she loved so much.
She knew that same pain, after all; closing her eyes for a moment as she placed a hand atop Pearls' head. If it took forever, she would do everything in her power to make up to her that she ever had to feel it in the first place.. and she hoped, silently, that Pearls would always know that.
