2013 end-of-year top 20 chart
I originally wanted to create a top ten chart, then going through all the highlights of this year I selected 40 tracks. However, I couldn't bring it down to 10, no matter how hard I tried. So I had to settle with my 20 favourite tunes this year, I just can't not mention any of these (and I still have a lot more that I want you to listen). So my top twenty goes like this:
In reverse order, on the 20th spot is a beautiful tune from anjunadeep. 2013 was huge for them, their anjunadeep 05 selection was one of my favourite albums this year. We Are Heroes is a perfect sunset tune created by the producer genius Jody Wisternoff from the legendary Way Out West.
20: Jody Wisternoff ft Pete Josef - We Are Heroes [Anjunadeep]
The next song is from a slovenian talent, whose "Escape Machine" album is really something spectacular (released in 2012), the title speaks for itself. You might know I prefer songs with vocals, now this one is an instrumental one, but it is so colourful, harmonic and imaginative that you won't even notice.
19: Sare Havlicek - Diamondback (Part 4) [Nang]
Music Rises Up is a favourite for a lot of my DJ friends, no wonder why! It is unique, yet includes all the necessary elements to make it a hit. With amazing vocals (as you could expect from Stee Downes), magical sounds, this song is perfect to start the night.
18: Kyodai ft Stee Downes - Music Rises Up [Exploited]
On the magical 17th spot is a song that reminds me of the times when I first heard a deep house tune. Of course Stan Kolev was among those first artists I followed and in 2013 he still knows how to make you dance while taking you on a journey of sound. With the beautiful vocals by Jaidene Veda this track is one that I will keep playing for a long-long time. Released by curvve
17: Vinny Troia feat. Jaidene Veda - Fade Into You (Stan Kolev Remix) [Curvve]
The following song was remixed by a hungarian producer so I'm very proud to feature this reinvention of a tocadisco2013 song. Norbert Vasovski definitely has a special skill, this remix is pure perfection. On Repeat!
16: Tocadisco feat Lennart A Salomon - Get Away (Mr. Vasovski Remix)
Next up is a song that we were singing all summer. It's just something that stays in the back of your head and makes you happy every time you hear it. This is the kind of music that radios should play instead of the mainstream junk they are broadcasting (thanks to the big money provided by major record labels). Keep listening, you can't get enough of this harmony!
15: Art Of Shades ft Soukaïna - All Away
On 14th is a personal favourite from deep house legend Will Saul. I just love the vocals, the message, the baseline, the build, the vibe and so much more about this track. Went straight to my beach bar selection. This is one of the songs that function very differently based on the volume. Turn it down - it's a smooth background music. Turn it up - and dance! Absolutely Magical!
14: Close ft Charlene Soraia & Scuba - Beam Me Up [!K7 Records]
13 is a lucky number for us because we have a beautiful tune on this spot. I remember those beautiful summer days on the beach playing this tune. Songs connect with memories and this one is all about them. Put this one in your collection, it will make your life better! .)
13: Francesco Pico ft Royal Sapien - You Changed My Way (Dousk Remix) [Manual Music]
The next song needs very little hype because the name of the remixer says it all. Gui Boratto is a musical genius, one of my favourite artists. Every year he makes something to land in my top 10 and it is no different in 2013. Of course it is hard to fail with vocals like this, but still he is a master of sounds. You never know what to expect when you listen to something he makes, but it is always a treat to you ears. Released on getphysicalmusic.
12: Wankelmut & Emma Louise - My Head Is a Jungle (Gui Boratto Dub Mix)
On the 11th place we have the beautiful and extremely talented Nora En Pure with a song that every decent house fan should already know. It is something so unique it sticks in your head the first time you hear it. Well sampled, professionally built and mastered, Come With Me is an instant classic among house DJs.
11: Nora En Pure - Come With Me [Enormous]
Arriving at the top ten we have an other Anjunadeep release. A song that blew my mind as soon as I heard it on Anjunadeep 05. This track is pure perfection. I can only talk in superlatives about it. James Grant is usually associated with quality tunes, but this one stands out tall, bringing a smile on our face with one of the greatest drops of 2013!
10: The Presets - It's Cool (Andrew Bayer & James Grant Remix) [anjunadeep]
Joris Voorn is a controversial person in my life. My honest opinion is that he shouldn't do DJing, but keep producing tracks like this (of course you guys need to buy his music to support that). This song is so harmonic, so well constructed that I want it to be part of my life every day. It is a story, a journey, a medicine for relaxation. It would be foolish not to include this song in your daily playlist.
09: Joris Voorn - Ringo [Green]
The next track is not like anything you've heard before (at least on this list). It is hard to categorize, and that is one of the main reasons I included it in my top ten. I like to see how people are experimenting mixing different genres and this is one of the few tracks lately that use the power of dubstep-like sounds in nu-disco and deep house tunes. Listen how a glimpse of future sounds like.
08: Bongo - Ocean (Safia Remix) [Say Wat Records]
ARomance Junkie is a name you might never heard before. I really hope it is a name we can remember because this song is so awesome it just makes me wanna hug someone. I love when a girl has in a childish voice, on of the reasons I loved the productions of Late Night Alumni. Of course this tune has nothing to do with them, but I'm really looking forward to hearing more productions from these guys. Maximum support!
07: Aendy ft ARomanceJunkie - So Bad [Plano B Records]
Talking about cute vocals we have Bad Boys Cry north of the top 5. nervousrecords is lucky to have signed this one, it was one of those tunes I played all summer and will keep in my playlist for future beach sessions. Vocals are beyond beautiful, and the bassline is something that you'll remember even 10 years from now.
06: Mark Lower - Bad Boys Cry [nervous]
And now we have the top 5 coming. It was very hard to decide which tracks I liked most this year but Deep Blue Chair is definitely the best in its category. The EP was the kind that makes you hard to pick a remix, because all of them are great. The Timewriter of course has preference for I am a fan of him since day 1. The vocals on this track are from an other world, I just want to lay in the sand and listen to this song until the sun goes down. The EP has another remix from the amazing hungarian producer Forteba, make sure you check that out too!
05: Mika Olson - Deep Blue Chair (The Timewriter Remix) [Ready Mix Records]
The 4th best tune in 2013 from my selection is a remix of the amazing Stee Downes's song: Asunder. I think there's no reason to explain why I chose this one. A song that just makes me happy every time is a song that has a place in my top 5. Again, I think we should have music like this featured on our radio stations instead of what is considered "Top 40" right now. Don't forget to support the artists by buying their music so we could one day wake up, to find them on top of the charts.
04: Stee Downes - Asunder (Gabe Remix) [Off Recordings]
Roisin Murphy will always be my favourite singer of all times. She has the most amazing voice of our time and she is capable of giving birth to musical notes that I couldn't even imagine to try, and she makes it look so easy that I just feel embarrassed every time I'm lucky to be able watch her perform live. If you're not a new fan of electronic music (and my work of course), I'm pretty sure you've heard this song before. This fresh remix brings back the funky sounds of the 80's that gives the root of countless deep house songs. I could write long lines about this track, but let it speak for itself.
03: BorisDlugosch ft Roisin Murphy - Never Enough (Ricky Mattioli 80's Blend Mix) [Peppermint Jam]
This year was all about Hot Natured (Lee Foss, Jamie Jones, Ali Love, Luca Cazal) and the only reason that this song is not #1 on my list is that they don't need any bigger hype than they already have. The equally beautiful and talented Anabel Englund reverse skydived the group to the top of the charts with her unique voice and lyrics. No matter where I played this, it always made people dance. That's what you should do too, because quality house music is gaining more popularity and that is our goal for the forthcoming years.
02: Hot Natured featuring Anabel Englund - Reverse Skydiving [FFRR]
The number one song of 2013 is not a new one, instead it's a new remix of an old classic: Praise You by Fatboy Slim. The reason I chose this track is because it incorporates two genres in one, creating something very special, and very powerful. I want all of you to listen and listen carefully, because it is the sound of future. We live in a time, when musically everything is possible, and it has become very easy for individuals to produce music. This creates an enormous amount of trash, making the life of music presentation artists like myself extremely painful. I have to listen to tremendous amounts of new releases every day and 85% of them are crap. I want to set this song out as an example showing, that even if you experiment with different styles of music, you can still produce something that is harmonic, unique, entertaining AND high-quality.
01: Fatboy Slim - Praise You (Maribou State Remix) [Skint Records]

Audiowhores: "This will probably be our final production of 2013, and what a way to say 'goodbye' to the most productive & rewarding year we've had to date! When we first heard the original of this track on Mjuzieek Digital we knew straight away we wanted to do a remix of it, What a track, such a great vocal! End of night anthem"

Sitting alongside remixes by Sydney's Wave Racer and NY's Com Truise, Mario Basanov's experimental rework is a welcome re-imagining of Flight Facilities' catchy track. Super fun and funky fresh, the Lithuanian producer has given his usual magic touch to the already brilliant single. With Micky Green's ethereal vocals sitting atop a banging bassline, this is definitely one for the December playlist. The next time you have some friends over for dinner and they’re asking: “Hey, what’s this great sound playing? Let’s go out and party!”, in many places the answer probably is: “That’s the new one by Paskal & Urban Absolutes”. The blank faces of your circle of friends can be encountered best with: “It’s those two guys that were signed by Alex Barck for Sonar Kollektiv about two years ago. They are resident DJs at their label nights by now. And even though one of them, Alexander, lives in Berlin and the other one, Adrian lives in Dusseldorf both make music together. They fly and drive back and forth and that’s how this fabulous album came into being.” Then you may want to rewind the record to it’s beginning and play it from scratch. The opening track “Take The Fall” indicates nicely which direction the journey with Paskal & Urban Absolutes will take: The sugar sweet, soothing voice of Pete Josef from Bristol (one half of The White Lamp) bids you welcome in a very charming way and the production implies lasciviously that we're standing on the stairway to clubland. Already with the next track “Here Again” we are in the middle of the eye of the storm. Paul Randolph (the official singer of the Jazzanova live band) purifies a true dancefloor banger, that – and this is the big stunt – also works just as well at home. For “White Walls” and “Flieg Los” Alexa Voss of Neve Naive wrote some super catchy lyrics and lends her vocals to the two poppiest songs of the whole album. An album which is rich in pop appeal but never concealing its strong affinity for dance music – as in house, techno and even boogie. Take for instance “Hold Your Head Up” (featuring Kasar), a mysterious hybrid best described imagining the Pet Shop Boys doing deep house together with Hot Chip. Or “The Way”, where we are delighted by the tonsils of Desney Bailey and an arrangement so eager for the bassline that it evokes nothing but smiling faces and the urge to shake your body. Catchiness, positivism and euphoria (the name of one track by the way) – these are the catchphrases that come to mind when listening to this truly mesmerizing debut by one of the most promising new acts in a scene not to be defined by any genre. Album available as CD / LP / Digital: 22.11.2013 When second-last track, “Melancholia”, kicks in it's like the end of the best holidays of your life. A perfect Balearic bliss with memories of sitting at the sea, listening to a distant guitar and waving goodbye to a setting golden sun. So long, my friends. This album will impress you and your future guests with awe for months to come. Rest assured.
