I hate when I'm trying to find some news / info about events happening in certain locations, and all I get are sports news about teams from said locations.
Like, hey I wanna find out more about the Canada wildfires? "YANKEES DEVIN WILLIAMS A POTENTIAL SURPRISE TRADE-"
I DO NOT FUCKING CAREEE. PLEASE I WANT TO BE INFORMED ABOUT A VERY SERIOUS EVENT, THIS IS NOT THE TIME.

Had the exact same thought. At its face, I just don't get why this needs to exist? Surely it's a terrible way to store chains that large, so maybe they have a purpose..? But like why is it configured like that?? I have so many questions and I feel like any answer is just going to provoke more

Early 1950s: The American postwar boom caused many Americans to buy up cars which, in turn, caused major traffic jams. Malcom McLean, who owns a trucking business, was annoyed at this and sought to find a way to circumvent these issues.
1956: While not an original idea, McLean was the first to create standardized shipping containers intended for mass implementation. Around the same time, the Vietnam War starts to ramp up. McLean's company--now called SeaLand--pivots towards maritime shipping over trucking.
1967: A couple years before, McLean caught wind of American officials struggling with port logistics in South Vietnam and offers his help. This now becomes a huge source of revenue for his company. Trade relations between America and East Asian countries become stronger in the coming years.
1970-1980s: Shipping containers became a staple in Hong Kong. Then Taiwan. Then Japan. Then all of East Asia. Then most of the world. Americans are now adopting a globalized lifestyle, regularly importing goods from other countries. Bandai starts forming the concepts of Gashapon during this time as well, but their main attractions were toys and video games both domestically and internationally. This coincides with swiftly improving communication tech.
1990-2020s: Home computers. Gaming consoles. Fast-growing reputation of Japan's, Korea's and China's gaming industry. Internet. Online multiplayer. In-game currency & microtransactions. Mobile devices. Then smartphones. Live-service models. Gacha grows exponentially in Asian countries. COVID pandemic. Lockdown. Younger Americans growing up on video games and having a surplus of free time on their hands start looking towards the newly released Asian franchises. Now we're here.
It's a bit of a stretch but car traffic has indirectly led to the development of American gacha addictions

Remember when Cybertrucks got stuck in snow and trashed during the winter storms? Wonder how they’re gonna do with this new heat wave hitting half the planet
Better yet, what about the AI data centers having to come head to head with the energy demands for cooling

There will be times I see a filthy rich capitalist doing what filthy rich capitalists do and half-sarcastically think, "What is going on in their brains, they need to be studied under a microscope"
But I have to kindly remind myself that scientists have pried into many, many brains of all kinds of people. There is no difference. There is no "evil brain" or "greedy brain" or "genius brain". In the same vein, given slightly different circumstances, choices, and morals, we can become exactly the same kind of person as those that manipulate us.

Yes, using LLM AI is a dubious ethical decision at best and that deserves to be treated with the proper weight. However, using that as an excuse to completely reject any and all education regarding LLMs is misguided. If we are to criticize LLMs, we should first know how they work and what the intended approaches are, then work from there. Going headfirst without knowing the enemy is a death sentence.

With all the shortcuts people are taking to knowledge and hard work, especially when using AI to help with that, I've felt a need to understand things at a more fundamental, basic level. Like really get my hands dirty and my brain working to make the connections rather than have an AI make them for me. I'm hoping that I'm not doing this simply to be contrarian, but I still feel like there's substantial benefits to doing the work yourself--even if it takes more time, energy, resources, etc.

Just typed out what I thought was a normal American English sentence and, upon reading it back, realized that I said about 4 idioms before the period. And then realizing that knowing nothing about these idioms must make the sentence so confusing because it's like speaking in code.

It just occurred to me that when people say "our devices are listening to us", I think most don't realize that the algorithm really doesn't need to. It's not difficult.
If you're thinking about getting Korean food, and Google Maps saw you visited 3 Korean restaurants in the past 2 weeks, and Youtube sees you've watched Korean mukbang, and Instagram saw that 2 of the last 7 posts of your favorite cooking influencer were Korean recipes... maybe you shouldn't be surprised when next time you mention wanting to get Korean food with your friend during peak lunch hours, you get a recommendation for a nearby Korean restaurant.

I know enough terminology to understand this post but not enough context to understand why they’d be bothered. You are a straight man. You are on TikTok, nay, BOOKTOK. You act as if you will catch the girlsmut cooties by reading their books. Who is the embarrassing one here
seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises it’s about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors

The people yearn for House of Leaves
underground parking garages are criminally underutilized as a horror setting. windowless curving concrete labyrinths stretching up and down and all around you, that's some Backrooms shit
