We asked four all-star dancers to share their best fitness tips that you can use at home or at the gym, even if you have two left feet. 1. Lacey Schwimmer As Lady Foot Locker's brand ambassador (and former "Dancing With the Stars" cast member), Lacey Schwimmer knows what it takes to keep her body in top shape. The dancer/singer keeps her legs toned at home by doing toe rises, known as "releves" in the ballet world. The simple exercise effectively targets your calves, thighs and glutes. Laurieann Gibson When she's not working with stars like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry or Janet Jackson, Laurieann Gibson is working on her own lean physique. The Emmy-nominated director, choreographer and creative director stresses the importance of warming up your body. "I like to always remind my dancers about ways to avoid injury," Gibson says. Dancers often succumb to lower-body injury because of long rehearsal hours. But with a few simple tips, her dancers (and you) can stay injury free. "One of the basic ways to avoid injury is to always make sure to stretch and warm up your body. This will loosen up your muscles, which will help to avoid common strain injuries such as shin splints and ankle strains," Gibson says. Another tip for best results: Add variety to your workout routine. "I believe it's extremely important to include some other type of fitness activity in your training, so cross training will help you to avoid injury when you are dancing," she says. "I personally love to run outdoor fitness trails. I love the meditative value I get when out alone, challenging myself to run faster and higher." 3. Cheryl Burke Between her gigs as a professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars and her role as a Macy's spokesperson, Cheryl Burke juggles a busy schedule! She dished her simple secret for sculpting her bod into taut and toned shape -- all in the privacy of her home! "I love to work out to my Jazzercise DVDs at home," Burke says. "The new ones are Latin dance-based and really provide a wonderful workout. I can burn up to 600 calories an hour working out with them." 4. Briana Evigan Actress and dancer Briana Evigan has been dancing her whole life, but she took her talent to the big screen in 2008 when she starred as Andie West in "Step Up 2: The Streets." Evigan credits her slim body to a consistent exercise routine, including lots of intense dance classes like hip hop. "Hip hop classes and ballet are what I've been keeping up with, and of course my usual abdominal workout, which consists of 500 sit-ups a session. Or I take a 30-minute abs class at my gym. 10 Workout Secrets: Expert Exercise Tips
Getting and staying fit can be a challenge. For many of us, it's hard just to get up off the couch. So what's the secret of people who have managed to make exercise a way of life?
1. Be Consistent Chase Squires is the first to admit that he's no fitness expert. But he is a guy who used to weigh 205 pounds, more than was healthy for his 5'4" frame. "In my vacation pictures in 2002, I looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man at the beach," says the 42-year-old Colorado resident. Squires decided enough was enough, cut out fatty food, and started walking on a treadmill. The pounds came off and soon he was running marathons -- not fast, but in the race. He ran his first 50-mile race in October 2003 and completed his first 100-miler a year later. Since then, he's completed several 100-mile, 50-mile, and 50k races. His secret? "I'm not fast, but I'm consistent," says Squires, who says consistency is his best tip for maintaining a successful fitness regimen. "It all started with 20 minutes on a treadmill," he says. "The difference between my success and others who have struggled is that I did it every single day. No exercise program in the world works if you don't do it consistently." 2. Follow an Effective Exercise Routine The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recently surveyed 1,000 ACE-certified personal trainers about the best techniques to get fit. Their top three suggestions: Strength training. Even 20 minutes a day twice a week will help tone the entire body. Interval training. "In its most basic form, interval training might involve walking for two minutes, running for two, and alternating this pattern throughout the duration of a workout," says Cedric Bryant, PhD, FACSM, chief science officer for ACE. "It is an extremely time-efficient and productive way to exercise." Increased cardio/aerobic exercise. Bryant suggests accumulating 60 minutes or more a day of low- to moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking, running, or dancing. 3. Set Realistic Goals "Don't strive for perfection or an improbable goal that can't be met," says Kara Thompson, spokesperson for the International Health Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA). "Focus instead on increasing healthy behaviors." In other words, don't worry if you can't run a 5K just yet. Make it a habit to walk 15 minutes a day, and add time, distance, and intensity from there. Continued 4. Use the Buddy System Find a friend or relative whom you like and trust who also wants to establish a healthier lifestyle, suggests Thompson. "Encourage one another. Exercise together. Use this as an opportunity to enjoy one another's company and to strengthen the relationship." 5. Make Your Plan Fit Your Life Too busy to get to the gym? Tennis star Martina Navratilova, health and fitness ambassador for the AARP, knows a thing or two about being busy and staying fit. Make your plan fit your life, she advises in an article on the AARP web site. "You don't need fancy exercise gear and gyms to get fit." If you've got floor space, try simple floor exercises to target areas such as the hips and buttocks, legs and thighs, and chest and arms (like push-ups, squats, and lunges). Aim for 10-12 repetitions of each exercise, adding more reps and intensity as you build strength. 6. Be Happy Be sure to pick an activity you actually enjoy doing, suggests Los Angeles celebrity trainer Sebastien Lagree. "If you hate weights, don't go to the gym. You can lose weight and get in shape with any type of training or activity," he says. And choose something that is convenient. Rock climbing may be a great workout, but if you live in a city, it's not something you'll be doing every day. 7. Watch the Clock Your body clock, that is. Try to work out at the time you have the most energy, suggests Jason Theodosakis, MD, exercise physiologist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. If you're a morning person, schedule your fitness activities early in the day; if you perk up as the day goes along, plan your activities in the afternoon or evening. "Working out while you have the most energy will yield the best results," Theodosakis says. 8. Call In the Pros Especially if you're first getting started, Theodosakis suggests having a professional assessment to determine what types of exercise you need most. "For some people, attention to flexibility or to balance and agility, may be more important than resistance training or aerobics," he says. "By getting a professional assessment, you can determine your weakest links and focus on them. This will improve your overall fitness balance." Continued 9. Get Inspired "Fitness is a state of mind," says fitness professional and life coach Allan Fine of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. One of Fine's tricks to get and stay motivated is to read blogs or web sites that show him how others have been successful. "Who inspires you?" he asks. 10. Be Patient Finally, remember that even if you follow all these tips, there will be ups and downs, setbacks and victories, advises Navratilova. 5 easy fitness tips to start a healthier lifestyle
It's the full flush of spring, and many people's minds turn toward getting into better shape. But for some people, the thought of getting into the gym, changing their lifestyle routines and spending a lot of time working out seems too daunting. Why not set realistic goals that you can more easily attain? These five easy fitness tips may not turn you into a rock-solid triathlete, but they'll get you into better shape and will help you feel much better about yourself. Tip 1: Walk every day You don't need a gym membership, a set of weights, or the latest Brazilian super workout DVD series to get into better shape. Just get out and walk. Of exercises known, walking is among the healthiest. It strengthens the legs, improves circulation, imparts benefits to the heart, reduces stress, burns calories, improves digestion, enhances immune function, and gives you an opportunity to get outdoors. I'm not talking about walking on a treadmill in your living room, but actual walking outside. If you're not a walker, start with just one mile per day. That's only 5,280 feet. You can easily walk a mile in fifteen minutes. Can you spare fifteen minutes per day for better fitness and well-being? Sure you can. If you're a walker, take the time for two or more miles per day. No special equipment is required, just a pair of shoes and a place to walk. Tip 2: Drink water Remember water? That's H2O - the primary material that makes up our bodies. We are approximately 75 to 80 percent water, and we need it to live. Drinking sodas can destroy your health, contribute to diabetes and obesity and ruin digestion. So-called diet sodas are just as bad and add nothing of benefit to your body. Six to eight glasses of water per day will hydrate you, improve your skin, enhance digestion, aid elimination, and help your body to rid itself of accumulated toxins. So when you're thirsty, drink water. And not 'plastic water' either. Plastic water bottles contain the toxin bisphenyl A, which leaches into the water. Most tap water in the U.S. is fresh and clean, and cheap. Why pay more for a bottle of water than you do for a comparable amount of gas? Tip 3: An apple a day Remember the maxim, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away?" It's pretty accurate. It turns out that apples are massively high in beneficial antioxidants which protect the cells of your body from premature destruction. The pectin in apples adds bulk to digestion and helps to greatly enhance intestinal elimination. Apples contain natural sugars and are way better for you than an energy drink or a candy bar. Plus, apples contain much-needed vitamins and minerals. Find the apple that's right for you. Like tart flavor? Granny Smith apples are the way to go. Prefer a bit sweeter? Try Fuji or Royal Gala apples. Instead of reaching for an "energy drink" or a pastry mid afternoon, eat an apple. Your co-workers will ask you what it is. Be a leader. Tip 4: Park farther from the door and take the stairs What door? What stairs? Any door, any stairs. When you get to the grocery store, the hardware store, or wherever you are going, let everybody else compete for the front parking spaces, while you park farther away. If you have to go up a couple of stories in a building, take the stairs, instead of an escalator or elevator. Every step in a day makes a positive contribution to your health. Unless you are disabled, there is no good reason to park close or use a people-mover. Get used to the back of the lot and the stairwell, and you'll find yourself a lot closer to the front of the pack in terms of fitness. Tip 5: Be moderate with alcohol Think of every beer, glass of wine or cocktail as a glass of calories. Sure, a glass of wine with dinner is basically very good for health. But a few cocktails in the course of an evening slow down your metabolism, reduce brain function, and help you to put on weight. Instead of having that next drink, play with your kids, get together with your friends, or take a walk (refer to Tip 1). Fitness is not something that you accomplish in a short period of time. Instead, fitness is a lifestyle. When you are physically fit, you have more strength, energy, endurance and overall vitality. Being fit enhances mood and reduces mental fog.
