Chapter Three: The Weirdo on Maple Street
Doc felt bad for this girl. She really did.
After the group found her in the woods, they immediately brought her to the Wheeler house and snuck her into the basement. The entire time, her mouth was sealed shut and she spoke not a word of how she felt, any confusion, any hesitancy. Doc had taken Mike’s jacket off of him and draped it over the girl’s shoulders before she and her brother sat her on the couch. Now, the four stood in front of her, the boys pelting her with questions.
“Is there a number we can call for your parents?”
“Where’s your hair? Do you have cancer?”
“Did you run away?”
“Are you in some kind of trouble?”
“Is that blood?”
Lucas reached forward to touch the girl, but Mike swiped his hand away.
“Stop it! You’re freaking her out!”
“She’s freaking me out!”
“I bet she’s deaf.” Dustin turned to the girl before clapping his hands loudly, the girl instantly flinching back.
Doc shoved Dustin with a cold stare. “Cut that out! What is wrong with you? She’s obviously scared and probably frozen to death. Mike-”
“Yeah, I’m on it.” He spun around and hurried to their basket of freshly washed clothing. Just then, thunder rumbled a bit harder than before, the poor girl on the couch tensing up and shutting her eyes tightly. Dustin and Doc stared at her in concern and Lucas had a look of perplexity on his face.
“The thunder won’t hurt you.” Doc softly whispered, the girl on the couch slowly opening her eyes and staring up at her. Doc’s eye twitched at the sharp pain that spread across her head. “It’s way out there. You’re way in here. You’re safe.”
A faint and hesitant smile made its way onto the girl’s face. Soon enough, Mike returned with the clothes he had worn the day before, holding them out to the girl. “Here, these are clean. Okay?”
The girl gently took the clothes from him and stared down at them for a moment before rubbing them against her cheek. The four carefully watched as she set down the clothes beside her and stood. Doc’s eyes widened when the girl reached down to the hem of her shirt. “No, no, no!” The Wheeler siblings shouted and both reached out to keep her hands in place as Dustin and Lucas quickly walked away, exclaiming their shock and horror. The girl stared between the Wheelers in confusion before Mike pointed towards their bathroom. “See over there? T-That’s the bathroom. Privacy. Get it?”
When the girl only stared at them in embarrassment, Doc moved around the table and picked up the clothes from the couch. “Come on, hun. I’ll go with you.” She offered a warm smile. The girl looked at the boys, who were still recovering from their shock, and slowly followed Doc to the bathroom. Once they were at the door, Doc pushed it open and handed the clothes to the girl after she had stepped inside. “Got everything? Just, uh… put those on and come back out. You’ll warm up in no time.” She nodded before holding the doorknob and pulling the door closed, but the girl grabbed it before it could be shut. Doc blinked at her. “You don’t want me to close it?”
“No.” The girl whispered. Raising her brows, Doc slowly nodded.
“Okay. I have that problem, too. I hate being in closed-off places. You’re like me,” She lightly chuckled before slowly pulling the door until there was only a crack. “Here’s what I do. I close the door until it gets to here. Is this okay?”
“Yes.”
“That’s good. If you want, I can stay out here until you’re done. Just… so you know you aren’t alone. Are you comfortable with that?” She received a nod in response, so she gave one back. “Okay. I’ll be here when you’re done.”
Just when Doc was going to turn around, the girl reached out and held her by the fingertips. Doc gulped and furrowed her brows at the sudden pressure in her head and chest. The pressure wasn’t so bad that it prevented her from breathing, but it was patient. As if it were a warning, a signal. Through this new and quite uncomfortable feeling, she offered another smile towards the girl. When their hands separated, the pressure faded away almost entirely. Almost.
The two turned their backs to each other as the three boys spoke in poorly hushed whispers just a few paces away. “This is mental.” Doc heard Dustin from where she stood.
“At least she can talk.” Mike shrugged.
“She said ‘no’ and ‘yes’. Your three-year-old sister says more.” Lucas pointed out.
“She tried to get naked.” Dustin reminded before Lucas sighed.
“There’s something seriously wrong with her. Like, wrong in the head.”
“She just went like-” Dustin mimicked the girl taking off her shirt, swiping his hat off in the process.
“I bet she escaped from Pennhurst.”
Mike blinked. “From where?”
“The nuthouse in Kerley County.”
Dustin smugly smiled at his friend. “You got a lot of family there?”
“Bite me,” Lucas snapped as Mike rolled his eyes. “Seriously, though, think about it. That would explain her shaved hair and why she’s so crazy.”
“Why she went like-” Dustin mimicked her again.
“She’s an escapee, is the point. She’s probably a psycho.”
“Like Michael Myers.”
“Exactly! We should’ve never brought her here.”
Mike frowned at his friend, not all that surprised by his lack of sympathy. “So, you just wanted to leave her out there in that storm?”
“Yes! We went out to find Will, not another problem.”
“I think we should tell your mom.” Dustin suggested.
“I second that.”
“Who’s crazy now?!” Mike shook his head.
“How is that crazy?!”
“Cause we weren’t supposed to be out tonight, remember?”
“So?”
“So, if I tell my mom and she tells your mom and your mom-”
“Oh, man.” Dustin whispered as Lucas sighed.
“Our houses become Alcatraz…”
Relieved that his friends had finally seen his side of things, Mike nodded. “Exactly. We’ll never find Will. Alright, here’s the plan. She sleeps here tonight.”
“You’re letting a girl-”
“Just listen! In the morning, she sneaks around my house, goes to the front door and rings my doorbell. My mom will answer and know exactly what to do.”
“You mean adopt her?” Dustin raised his brows. Doc sharply inhaled at his words, Mike cutting a look to her.
“That was different… This time, she’ll send her back to Pennhurst or wherever she comes from. We’ll be totally in the clear! And tomorrow night, we go back out. And this time, we find Will.”
From behind her, Doc heard a quiet thud. Turning around, she cautiously peeked into the bathroom. “We good in there? You didn’t fall in the toilet, did you?” She softly chuckled before the girl opened the door, now wearing Mike’s blue sweater and grey sweatpants. “You look comfy. Do you feel better at all?”
“Yes.”
“I’m glad.”
After the girls returned, Dustin and Lucas began to take their leave. Doc took the soaked shirt the girl had been wearing as well as Mike’s slightly damp jacket and brought them to the dryer, setting them on top for their mother to take care of. When she returned to her brother, she saw he and the girl were building a fort for her to sleep in. Tilting her head, she approached the two. “She could sleep in my room, Mike.”
“No, she can’t. Mom knows all your friends and that she is not one of them. Plus, no one was supposed to be over tonight.”
“That’s true,” She whispered before moving to sit on her knees in front of the girl. “Uh… I never told you my-”
“We’re good here, Doc. Go to bed,” Mike snapped his head to her. “And you have to swear not to say anything.”
“You think I’m an idiot?” She growled. Noticing the girl watching in curiosity, Doc calmed her rage, tightly smiled at the girl, and left the basement without another word.
The next morning, Doc had yet again been the only Wheeler not at the table for breakfast. Placing her hands on her hips, Karen craned her neck up. “(Y/N)! Breakfast!” She called her daughter. At the sound of her voice, Doc stumbled out of her bedroom and down the staircase, dragging her backpack and jacket with her. Entering the dining area, Karen raised a brow at her. “Do we have to do this every morning? Come on, eat something before you go to school.”
Doc strode into the kitchen, grabbing an orange from the fruit bowl. “I’m eating light this morning.”
“An orange? Honey, you’re gonna need more than that for breakfast.”
“Okay, well,” She reached over and plucked out an apple. “There. Delicious and nutritious.” She stuck the apple between her teeth and rushed out of the dining room. Karen watched her go in confusion before moving her eyes to her other children.
“What’s going on with your sister?”
Mike, after scarfing down the rest of his breakfast, jumped to his feet and hurried out of the room. “I’m checking on her!”
Just as he had expected, his sister was just about to open the door to the basement, attempting to get to the girl before him. Grabbing her wrist, he spun her to face him. “Stop it.”
“Oh, come on, Mike,” Doc harshly sighed. “Can you stop with this big brother act? This is our secret after all.”
Rolling his eyes, Mike opened the door halfway and wedged his body in, keeping Doc from following despite her pushing and shoving. “Just meet me outside! I’ll take care of it!”
“You’re not even gonna let me say goodbye?”
“Just go!”
“Fine!” She yanked her wrist away from him and stomped towards her roller skates. She shoved her feet in and laced them up tight, hissing quietly when her fingernails dug into her palms. “Bye, Mom! Bye, Dad!” She called out before skating out the door.
Mike was taking longer than she expected. Within the time she spent waiting for him, she managed to finish eating her apple, peel her entire orange and eat half of it before he came pedaling around the front. Sighing out in relief, she skated to meet him, the two now off to school. Or at least, that’s what Doc thought they were doing. The farther they reached the end of the block, the more Mike started to stray from her side. She knew her brother had other intentions as he started to walk his bike up a hill.
“What are you doing?” She tried to follow him, but he shook his head at her.
“Just keep going. Go to school.”
“Ugh, fine…” She popped an orange slice into her mouth and sped up her pace.
By the time Doc arrived to school, there were no students trickling inside, no Troy or James lingering on the side, in search of a victim to torture. She realized that she may have been having a bit too much fun with trying out new tricks on her skates, and that she was late for school. Charging up the stairs with little to no difficulty, she threw the doors of the school open and cruised down the hall until she reached Mr Clarke’s classroom.
Peeking in, she smiled at the sight of Lucas and Dustin excitedly engaging in the lesson, ever the lovable nerds. Her eyes slid over to the empty seat that was Will’s right beside hers. Doc wasn’t too certain if she could stomach sitting at that desk, listening to Mr Clarke teach, while Will was out there. Possibly alone and scared and hurt. Doc could feel her hands shake the harder she thought of the endless possibilities. Biting her lip, she spun around and skated to the back doors of the school, nearly running into a bench that sat in the recess area. Taking a seat, she buried her face into her hands and shakily exhaled.
“Look at her, James.”
“All alone. With no one around.”
Swallowing thickly, Doc snapped her head up to be met with Troy and James, standing before her with sickening grins. “What do you want?” She sighed.
“What do you have to offer, slut?” Troy slid beside her and wrapped his hand around her wrist. On her other side, James took a seat and quietly chuckled.
“It’s not much. She probably gave it all to her brother’s friends. Even the faggot, Byers.”
Ripping her wrist out of Troy’s grasp, Doc pushed off of the bench. “Don’t call him that, dipshit!”
“What’d you just say, slut?”
“You can’t hear? I said don’t call Will that. Dipshit.”
Clenching his jaw, Troy ran up to her and swung his fist, but she clumsily ducked under his arm, tripping over her wheels and stumbling until James caught her from behind, holding her arms behind her back. Doc opened her mouth to call out, to scream, to cry, but Troy cupped his hand over her mouth, the other brandishing a knife in front of her face. Her eyes widened and a muffled whimper left her mouth just before he pressed it against her throat. “Watch how you speak to me. You don’t talk to a man like that. Or else you get punished. You want me to punish you, slut?”
Eyes frantically flickering all around, Doc couldn’t find it in her to answer. Troy didn’t seem to like this, for he pushed the knife closer, nicking her flesh a bit and drawing a drop of blood.
“Answer me!”
A loud pop startled the three, their heads whirling around to the source of the sound. Troy and James widened their eyes, for there was now a gaping hole in the fence that had not been there before. “What the hell…?” James whispered.
Troy, remembering his current victim, turned back around, but stuttered in his steps when he saw she was nowhere to be seen.
-------------------------------------------------
“You want anything to drink?” Mike asked the girl, who he nicknamed El, as they strolled around the house. “We have OJ, skim milk… What else? Um, we have…” His voice trailed off when he noticed El observing the television in the living room. Smiling, he followed her in and stood behind it. “Oh, this is my living room. It’s mostly just for watching TV.”
El reached out and let her fingers trace the top of the television.
“Nice, right? It’s a 22-inch. That’s, like, ten times bigger than Dustin’s.”
However, the girl had turned away, now interested in the collection of family photos displayed on the fireplace mantel. She approached it before stepping up to get a better look at the photos. Her finger gently traced the photo of Nancy, a small smile cracking. “Pretty…”
“I guess.” Mike narrowed his eyes, watching as El moved farther down the mantel to view more photos. “That’s my sister, Nancy. And that’s baby Holly. And that’s (Y/N). The girl from last night. But I call her Doc.”
“Doc…”
“Yeah. She didn’t always like the name, but it stuck the longer she lived with us,” El turned to him with a frown, so he elaborated. “(Y/N) is adopted.”
“What is… adopted?”
Raising his brows, Mike stepped closer to El. “Well, we found her when she was little. She was alone in a park and we took her to the police. But no one said they were her parents. So, we made her a part of the family. She can be annoying sometimes, but I think that was the best decision we’ve ever made. She’s definitely my favorite sister.”
“Sister?”
“Yeah, Doc’s my sister. She has been for… I think six years? Do you have a sister? Or parents?”
El softly smiled at the photo of Doc just beside their family photo. Her (e/c) eyes smiled with the rest of her face. Something about a girl with (e/c) eyes, (s/c) skin and (h/c) hair seemed just right to her. Like home.
She’d like for Doc to be her sister.
-------------------------------------------------
Plucking a yellow band-aid from the box she carried with her at all times, Doc tore it out of its packaging and plastered it against her fresh wound. She’d been aimlessly skating around about three neighborhoods and managed to trip and fall down several hills, one of these falls resulting in a cut on her knee.
Sniffling, she wiped the tears that began to dry on her cheeks and stood on wobbly legs. Doc had no clue as to what her brother planned on their way to school, but if he was at home, she felt safe enough to return there and tell him of the incident outside of school. She always felt safe around Mike and opened up to him about her feelings. And it was a blessing that she happened to get a very good listener for a brother.
As she skated home, her thoughts were consumed by what Troy had said to her, had done to her. The boy had always alluded to her being some sex toy to Mike’s friends, but he’d never outright called her any name.
Slut.
And the horrible name he called Will. Even with him going missing, the boy was still shown no mercy.
Clamping her hand around her throat, Doc let her tears spill all over again, the small cut from Troy’s knife stinging just a bit. When she reached her house, she stepped out of her skates and walked inside. In the living room was her mother and brother, talking to each other on the couch. They both turned to the front door, Karen’s face melting into concern for her daughter. “(Y/N)? Sweetie, are you okay?”
Doc sniffled and tried on a smile. “Y-Yeah, I just, uh… f-fell and hit my knee on the way here.” She gestured to her injury. Mike’s eyes flicked back and forth between her knee and her face that was scrunched up in a false smile. From the look he was giving her, Doc knew Mike had called her slight bluff.
“This is why I tell you not to go around everywhere with those skates.” Karen sighed and approached her, setting her roller skates beside the door and guiding her to the couch, sitting her beside Mike. The two gave each other a brief look before focusing on their mother again. “Now, you two… I just want you to know I’m here for you, okay? All this that’s been going on with Will, I can’t imagine what it’s been like for you two. I just… I want you to feel like you can talk to me. I never want you to feel like you have to hide anything from me. Especially you, (Y/N).”
“M-Me?” The girl cleared her throat after the rasp that left her throat.
“Yes. I know how close you and Will are… and I know how familiar this situation may seem to you. But this time, you’re here. You’re safe. If you… ever get the way you used to… Talk to me, sweetie. I want you to feel safe in your own home.”
Doc stared forward as Mike shifted uncomfortably. He placed a hand over his sister’s awkwardly before a thud could be heard from upstairs. The three snapped their heads up, Karen frowning in confusion. “Is there someone else here?”
Doc’s eyes slid to her brother, who looked away from his mother. “No,” He shrugged before standing. “Hey, Mom, I’m gonna take Doc upstairs. She… She needs rest.”
“Oh, Mike,” Karen gushed as Mike helped his sister to stand and guide her up the stairs. “You’ve been so considerate of your sister lately. Thank you so much.”
Mike felt a hint of guilt, for he knew he hadn’t been all that considerate of Doc at all. Perhaps for her safety, but that was only when Will went missing. Before that, he’d left her out of anything that had to do with the Party. It hadn’t strained their relationship much, since they spent plenty of time together when he wasn’t with his friends, but there was always tension when the three were around them. Like when they searched for Will in the woods.
But this wasn’t exactly known by Karen, so Mike responded to her with a nod and continued up the stairs with Doc. Once they were out of Karen’s sight, Mike rushed the two of them into his room, closing and locking the door behind him. “Eleven?” He called out, heading past his sister and to his closet. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I’m okay…” Doc whispered, not realizing Mike had been referring to someone else entirely.
“El?” Mike opened his closet door, El curled up with her knees pulled up to her chest. Widening her eyes, Doc joined her brother on the floor in front of the girl she thought had been long gone by now.
“Mike…” El sobbed, eyes wet with tears.
“Is everything okay?” Doc whispered. El moved her gaze to Doc, nodding her head in answer. “Are you sure?”
Eleven’s heart warmed at the sight of Doc’s teary eyes. She was like her. Sad.
“Promise.”

I realized it could've been read wrong bc I don't outward say it until, like, the third chapter, I think. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Enjoy!

Chapter Two: The Search for Will Byers
Jim Hopper and Officer Callahan watched in disinterest as the four children before them overlapped each other in their explanations for the whereabouts of their friend. After almost an entire minute, Hopper sighed out. “Okay, okay, okay. One at a time, alright? You.” He pointed at Mike, who nodded to indicate he was listening. “You said he takes what?”
“Mirkwood.”
“Mirkwood?”
“Yeah.”
The Chief turned to Callahan. “Have you ever heard of Mirkwood?”
“I have not,” The officer shook his head, looking up from his notepad. “That sounds made up to me.”
“No,” Lucas spoke up. “It’s from Lord of the Rings.”
“Well, The Hobbit.” Dustin corrected Lucas, who slowly turned to him in annoyance.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“He asked!”
“‘He asked’!”
Mike and Doc rolled their eyes as Jim sat forward. “Hey, hey, hey! What’d I just say? One at a damn time! You.” He indicated Mike again.
“Mirkwood, it’s a real road. It’s just the name that’s made up.”
“Yeah, it’s where Cornwallis and Kerley meet.” Doc added, Mike frowning at her.
“How do you know what Mirkwood is?”
“I just do. We can show you, if you want, Chief.”
Jim sighed and leaned back in his chair. “I know where it is.”
“We can help look.” Mike stated with a look of determination, the three beside him agreeing.
“No,” The Chief shook his head before the kids spoke over each other again, this time to prove they could help. “No. After school, you are all to go home. Immediately. That means no biking… or skating around looking for your friend. No investigating. No nonsense. This isn’t some Lord of the Rings book.”
“The Hobbit.” Dustin corrected again, earning a blink from Hopper. This caused Lucas to lean over the Wheeler siblings and hit Dustin, scolding him for being so snippy with the Chief of Police.
Doc exhaled through her nose as the two boys reached over her and her brother to fight. Their roughhousing ended up shoving her and Mike into each other harshly, so she grabbed Lucas by the wrist to halt his actions, Mike staring forward with an exasperated expression. “Do I make myself clear?” Hopper quietly asked.
With no answer, the Chief slowly stood to his feet and took two steps forward, towering over the children who now stared up at him with big eyes.
“Do I make myself… clear?”
“Yes, sir.” They whispered.
Once the four were dismissed, they were in the hallway, Lucas and Doc straying behind Dustin and Mike. With a bit of hesitation, she skated to his side. “Lucas, don’t you think we should do something?”
“You heard what the Chief said, Doc. Besides, it’s better for you to stay home, anyway.”
“Why, because I’m not in the Party?”
“What? No. I-I just meant it’d be safer for you.”
“Because I’m a girl?” She raised her brow, Lucas widening his eyes.
“No, no! I just… I meant, um…” It was then that he decided to give up and ran to catch up with his friends, leaving her behind the three, as usual.
-------------------------------------------------
“We should be out there right now. We should be helping look for him.” Mike hadn’t yet touched his food as he spoke to his parents during dinner. Karen sighed and turned to Holly to assist her eating.
“We’ve been over this, Mike. The Chief says-”
“I don’t care what the Chief said.”
Karen snapped her head up to him. “Michael!”
“Mom,” Doc cut in. “We’re supposed to just sit here and do nothing while Will is out there? I mean, we don’t know what he’s going through, he could be in danger.”
“More reason to stay put, sweetie. End of discussion.”
The dinner table fell silent, save for Ted’s utensils scraping against his plate as he ate without a care in the world. Karen stared at her husband, awaiting his say in the matter, but got none when Nancy spoke up, “So… me and Barbara are gonna study at her house tonight. That’s cool, right?”
Karen shook her head. “No. Not cool.”
“What? Why not?”
“Why do you think? Am I speaking Chinese in this house?” She looked around at the family with raised brows. “Until we know Will is okay, no one leaves.”
“This is such bullshit!”
“Language.” Ted decided to say his first word since dinner.
“So we’re under house arrest? Just because Mike’s friend got lost on the way home from-”
Doc felt rising anger as her lungs constricted. “Don’t blame Will for this just because you wanna lie to Mom!”
“(Y/N), deep breaths. Nancy, take that back.” Karen tried to calm her children.
“No!”
Standing up from her chair, Doc walked around her siblings to leave the kitchen. “I’m sorry, I can’t listen to Nancy be an asshole tonight.”
“Language!” Her father called out to her as she rushed up the stairs. After distancing herself within her bedroom, she approached her bulletin board on her wall. Nancy had helped her make it last year and she added a photo to it each time she got one. Her eyes fell upon a photo of her and Will, standing in front of the movie theater after watching Poltergeist. She was ruffling his hair, their smiles frozen in time.
“Were you scared at all, Will?”
“No! Of course not!”
“Oh… Well, I was.”
“Really…? Uh- Well, I guess there were some parts that made me jump…”
Smiling softly at the memory, she shook her head. “You better be okay, Will.”
Unable to sit beside herself for longer than ten minutes, Doc made her way to the basement, careful of her footing so as to not alert her brother, who was sitting at his D&D table. Stalking closer, she noticed he was talking to one of his friends on his walkie. It was most likely Lucas, since he was in closer range than Dustin. Silently standing a few paces behind him, she carefully listened to their conversation.
“I was thinking… Will could’ve cast Protection last night, but he didn’t. He cast Fireball. Over.”
“What’s your point? Over.” Lucas’s voice was heard over the slight static of the walkie.
“My point is… he could’ve played it safe, but he didn’t. He put himself in danger to help the Party. Over.”
Doc could’ve sworn her heart stopped beating for a second. There was a moment of silence before Lucas responded.
“Meet me in ten. Over and out.”
Mike pushed down the antenna of his walkie and stood up from his seat. Doc watched as he gathered his flashlight and jacket, stuffing the former into his backpack, all while unaware of her presence behind him. Wringing her hands together, Doc contemplated asking if she could join. With how frantic he was, she figured he wouldn’t have time to argue and would allow her to come in the end. When Mike spun around, he frighteningly squealed, making her jump as well. “What are you doing?!”
“I’m coming with you.”
“No, you’re not,” He slung his backpack over his shoulder and brushed past her. “Stay home.” Hurrying up the stairs, Mike snuck almost silently through his garage, grabbing his bike on the way out. He had rounded to the front of his house when he heard noises coming from the side. Turning his head, he saw Steve Harrington trying to climb up to Nancy’s window. When Steve noticed him, the two made awkward contact before Mike rolled his eyes and pedaled away.
The Wheeler boy made his stops at the Sinclair and then Henderson residences before they were off, riding their bikes toward Mirkwood. As they biked, Dustin nervously glanced from Mike to the road before him. There was an elephant in the room, or rather in the woods, that needed to be addressed, but he knew it would set his friend off if he brought it up. Nonetheless, he still asked, “Uh… Mike? Where’s Doc? I thought she’d wanna be apart of this, too.”
“She’s home.”
“You wouldn’t even let her help look for Will?”
“It’s not safe! Why would I let her come if whatever got Will could get her, too?”
Lucas rolled his eyes. “Doc isn’t a baby, though. She’s not even your little sister, you guys are the same age!”
“That doesn’t matter! She’s gone missing once and she was traumatized enough from that. I’m keeping her safe.”
Dustin and Lucas glanced at each other with concerned looks as Mike pedaled harder. The remainder of their route fell silent until they reached their destination. “Ah, man. This is it.” Lucas sighed before the three of them hopped off their bikes and walked over to the road barricade blocking off where Will’s bike had been found hours ago by the police.
Thunder rumbled above before the sky began to leak. Dustin felt a drop pelt his skin and stared up. “Hey, guys. You feel that? I think maybe we should go back.”
“You’re gonna let a little rain stop you, Dust?” The voice of Doc made the three boys whirl around. Said girl was pedaling on her bike towards them (a rare sight), a triumphant smile on her face directed towards Mike.
“Uh, what the hell are you doing here? I told you to stay home.”
“I know what you told me,” She came to a stop in front of him, hopping off her bike and putting out the kickstand. “You told me to get out of the basement, you told me your hangout was ‘boys only’, you told me to leave your friends alone. But you are not gonna tell me I can’t help look for Will. He’s my friend, too. So let’s go before Mom realizes we’re gone, yeah?”
Doc smiled at her friends before walking past her brother and ducking under the barricade. When she didn’t hear anyone following, she turned to see them staring at her in shock. Rolling her eyes, she flicked up her hood and clicked on her flashlight before shining it on them. “Hello? Am I left out of not finding Will now?”
“Shut up.” Mike hissed before he and the boys ducked under the barricade and followed her. Once he was at his sister’s side, he gently grabbed her by the elbow. “Stay close. Stay on channel six. Don’t do anything stupid.” He told his friends as he tugged Doc closer to him.
The further the quartet ventured into the woods, the bigger the raindrops fell and the harder the thunder rumbled. Despite this, they still screamed at the top of their lungs for the missing Byers boy. Doc would shine her flashlight in a certain direction and attempt to investigate, but Mike would tug her back to him by her elbow. It had been the third time she’d done it and Mike had just about enough of his sister’s behavior.
“I said stay close.”
“I am staying close.”
“No, you keep walking away.”
“I’m giving us some space,” Rolling her eyes, Doc turned her head away from Mike. “Will! You out there?!”
“Will! Will!”
“Byers!”
“I’ve got your X-Men 134!” Dustin called out before heavily sighing. “Guys, I really think we should turn back.”
Lucas shook his head as he continued forward. “Seriously, Dustin? You wanna be a baby, then go home already!”
“I’m just being realistic, Lucas!”
“No, you’re just being a big sissy!”
Doc’s ears perked at a distant noise she heard over the pelting rain. Her footsteps grew slower as a throbbing ache settled its way into the back of her head, Mike’s hold eventually leaving her arm. Quietly hissing, she reached up and cradled her head, hoping to take some aspirin when she returned home.
Mike seemed to have gotten distracted as well, for he wasn’t listening as Dustin continued, “Did you guys ever think Will went missing because he ran into something bad? And we’re going to the exact same spot where he was last seen? And we have no weapons or anything?”
“Dustin, shut up.” Mike whispered.
“I’m just saying, does that seem smart to you?”
“Shut up. Shut up.” He quieted his friend at the sound of rustling. Doc joined Mike’s side again as he looked up at her. “Did you guys hear that?”
The rustling grew louder, pressure building up in the side of Doc’s head the closer whatever creature in the woods got to them. Just beside Lucas, a few branches snapped, the four shining their lights on whatever had prowled into the night.
What they didn’t expect to see was a kid, no doubt their age, with a buzzcut and in nothing but a large yellow shirt. She was drenched by the still-falling rain and her chest heaved, presumably from the running she had been doing. She stared forward at the group, eyes running over each of them. When her eyes landed on Doc, her fingers twitched.
Unbeknownst to her, Doc’s fingers had twitched as well.

Lost and Found
A/N: Welcome back. I just wanted to say, that in case anyone is confused, Doc (the reader) is adopted. You don't have to worry about race bc you are not Mike's blood-related sister. I realized it could've been read wrong bc I don't outward say it until, like, the third chapter, I think. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Enjoy!
Warnings: none that I'm aware of

Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers
On a dark autumn’s night, at the edge of Maple Street’s suburban cul-de-sac, sat two sprinklers. They spat out their water to refresh the newly mowed lawn of the Wheeler residence. This lawn, amongst other aspects, was a symbol for the perfect nuclear family residing within the two-story home. Below those two stories, within the basement, sat the four members of Hawkins Middle School’s Audio Visual Club and players of the current Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
“Something is coming. Something hungry for blood,” whispered the president of the AV Club, Mike Wheeler, eyes trailing across his three friends who sat around his square table. “A shadow grows on the wall behind you, swallowing you in darkness. It is almost here.”
“What is it?” The soft voice of Will Byers impatiently asked across from Mike.
“What if it’s the Demogorgon?” Dustin Henderson raised his brows at his friends. Will sighed out and slumped against his chair in distress. “Oh, Jesus, we’re so screwed if it’s the Demogorgon.”
Lucas Sinclair, across from Dustin, widened his eyes and spoke with gestured hands, “It’s not the Demogorgon.”
Mike smirked at his friends’ groans and moans before grabbing a figure from behind his cardboard covering and slamming it upon the board in the middle of the table. “An army of troglodytes charge into the chamber!”
“Troglodytes?” Dustin grinned at Lucas, who smugly smiled back at him.
“Told ya.” He chuckled.
After the three unsuspecting boys’ laughter trailed off, a moment of silence passed before Mike’s face dropped in feigned confusion. “Wait a minute. Do you hear that? That… That sound? Boom… boom… Boom!” He banged against the table, causing the boys to jump and gasp. “That didn’t come from the troglodytes. No, that… That came from something else.”
Lucas and Dustin shared a knowing look before Mike slammed another figure onto the board. “The Demogorgon!”
Three sets of groans filled the basement, Dustin smacking his hand against the table. “We’re in deep shit.”
“Will, your action!”
“I don’t know!” The Byers boy exclaimed.
“Fireball him!” Lucas said as if it were obvious.
“I’d have to roll a 13 or higher!”
At this, Dustin widened his eyes. “Too risky. Cast a protection spell.”
“Don’t be a pussy. Fireball him!”
“Cast Protection.”
The argument between Dustin and Lucas ended abruptly upon Mike banging his hands against the table yet again. “The Demogorgon is tired of your silly human bickering! It stomps toward you. Boom!”
“Fireball him!”
“Another stomp, boom!”
“Cast Protection.”
“He roars in anger!”
From above the basement, on the other side of the closed door, a figure leaned against the wall, listening to the clamoring of the boys. Her sock-covered feet excitedly tapped the hardwood floor as a small smile graced her features. At Dustin’s chants of oh my god’, a soft giggle escaped from her throat. From behind her, she heard the approaching footsteps of her mother, Karen Wheeler. The woman moved to her side and opened the basement door, revealing Mike at the bottom of the staircase, seemingly searching for something. “Mike!” She called out.
The Wheeler boy snapped his head up to them, throwing his hands out to the side. “Mom, we’re in the middle of a campaign!”
“You mean the end? Fifteen after.” She tapped her wristwatch before walking back into the kitchen. As she passed her daughter, she gently touched her arm. “It’s time to get ready for bed, (Y/N). You have school tomorrow, and you threw up earlier. You need rest.”
Mike sighed and charged up the stairs, moving past his sister to get to Karen. Before he could start pestering their mother, the girl caught up to his side. “Hey, Mike, can I be added to your game next time? I was thinking-”
“For the thousandth time, Doc, no. Mom! Just twenty more minutes!” He brushed off his sister and turned to Karen.
“It’s a school night, Michael,” Karen sighed as she cleaned the remains of dinner. “I just put Holly to bed. You can finish next weekend.”
“But that’ll ruin the flow!”
“Michael-”
“I’m serious, Mom. The campaign took two weeks to plan. How was I supposed to know it was gonna take ten hours?”
Karen raised her brows in shock. “You’ve been playing for ten hours?”
Mike hesitated before turning to his father, Ted, who was adjusting the antennas on their television irritably. “Dad, don’t you think that twenty more-”
“I think you should listen to your mother.” He spoke before banging his hand on the television and quietly cursing. When Mike turned away from him, his sister walked over to the television and quietly whispered to her father.
“Dad. Can you please tell Mike to let me play with them next weekend-”
“Doc! I said no!” Mike yelled at her before storming away towards the garage. With a huff she crossed her arms and turned to her mother.
“Mom!”
“(Y/N), I can’t force Mike to include you.”
Leaning against the wall glumly, she could hear Will and Lucas stomping up the stairs and wishing the Wheeler couple a goodnight as they headed towards the garage with Mike. Behind her, she felt someone poke her shoulder, causing her to turn around.
It was Dustin, holding a pizza box in his hand. “Hey, Doc! Want this last slice?”
“No, thanks, Dust. I’m not hungry. Thank you, though.” She smiled and left the Henderson boy to see her friends out with her brother. Upon her arrival, Will grinned.
“Hi, Doc!”
The girl matched his expression and pranced to his bike, placing her hands on the handlebars from the front. “Hey, Will! How’s the game going? I heard you guys screaming.”
“It’s pretty heated right now, but I think we’ll be okay.” He nodded, his voice trailing off as Doc absentmindedly brushed her index finger against his. The two, once she had realized, made eye contact and shared a nervous smile before Dustin interrupted.
“There’s something wrong with your sister.”
“Which one?” Mike smirked, receiving a light slap to the arm from Doc.
“Nancy. She’s got a stick up her butt.”
Lucas nodded as the three boys mounted their bikes, Doc removing her hands from Will’s handlebars. “Yeah. It’s because she’s been dating that douchebag, Steve Harrington.”
Doc furrowed her brows. “Douchebag? I think Steve’s pretty nice.”
“Well, obviously. There’s no chance for him if he isn’t nice to the little sister.” Dustin pointed out, Doc rolling her eyes. “He’s turning her into a real jerk.”
“She’s always been a real jerk.” Mike frowned as the boys turned on their bike lights. Dustin shook his head and began to pedal away.
“Nuh-uh, she used to be cool. Like that time she dressed up as an elf for our Elder tree campaign.”
“That I wasn’t even invited to.” Doc muttered before Mike placed a hand over her mouth to shush her.
“That was four years ago!”
“Just saying!” Dustin called back. Lucas wished the two a goodnight and pedaled away as well.
Will watched as Doc smacked her brother’s hand from her mouth before he spoke up. “It was a 7.”
Before they could break out into an argument, they both turned to Will. “Huh?”
“The roll, it was a 7. The Demogorgon, it got me,” He smiled as he moved his eyes to Doc. “Night, Mike. Night, (Y/N).”
“Night, Will,” She smiled and watched him pedal away. “See you tomorrow! Tell your mom and Jonathan I said hi!”
“I will!” He called back.
Once the two were alone in their garage, Doc turned to her brother. “Mike, hear me out. I’ve been thinking about my D&D character and was thinking I could be a sorceress!”
“We don’t need a sorceress,” He sighed. “Besides, you don’t know anything about D&D!”
“You could teach me!”
Mike threw his hands up in the air. “Why can’t you just leave my friends alone?! You don’t even do the same things as us. You don’t play D&D, you’re not in the AV Club, you don’t like science, and you don’t even bike!”
“I do like science, I ride my bike when the skates aren’t practical, and you won’t let me join the AV Club! You never let me do anything with you guys. I may not be in your Party, but they’re my friends, too!”
“No, they’re not! You have Brenda Holloway and Sheriece Jacobi! Those are your friends! Why can’t you just do the things you like to do with the people you like to spend it with? Just stick with making clothes with your friends. It’s not hard.”
And with that, Mike made his way back into the house, leaving Doc with a clenched jaw and crossed arms. The moment he closed the door, the lights above flickered, arising confusion within her. The next second, the hairs at the back of her neck stood to attention and she tensed slightly at the feeling of a looming presence. Turning on her heel, she switched off the lights and trudged inside.
Routinely, Doc took the stairs two at a time before she ended up in front of her older sister’s, Nancy’s, door. Raising her hand, she softly knocked three times. On the other side of the closed door, Nancy could be heard groaning. “I’m on the phone!”
“It’s (Y/N)!” She called back. A moment of silence passed before Nancy opened the door, a small smile on her face.
“Sorry,” She sighed and leaned down, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Night, sis. Feel better, okay?”
“Okay, Nance. Say hi to Barb for me.” Doc whispered before turning away and allowing her feet to carry her to her bedroom. As usual, she left her door open just a crack and changed into her night clothes. Switching off her light, she crawled into bed and turned to her nightstand, where two framed pictures sat.
One was of her, Brenda and Sheriece holding a trophy for winning the school’s talent show with their revolutionary dance number. Beside it was her favorite. It was of Mike and his friends standing with her on her most recent birthday. They had just smashed her face into the cake and the five of them were grinning from ear-to-ear. Burying her face into her pillow, Doc heavily sighed. “One day…”
The next morning, Doc was the final Wheeler to join the breakfast table. After setting her pair of roller skates beside the front door, she sat beside her brother, who was currently pouring syrup onto his eggs. “You feeling better today, sis?” Nancy gently asked.
“Oh, yeah. I don’t know what yesterday was about. Maybe I ate something bad earlier.”
“Yeah, I heard you almost blew chunks all over Nancy’s bed last night.” Mike chuckled, receiving no response from his sister.
As Doc began to wordlessly eat, Nancy and Mike partook in their routine morning banter. “That’s disgusting.” Nancy scoffed.
“You’re disgusting!” Mike immediately shot back. Doc shook her head and watched as her mother answered the ringing phone, her little sister, Holly, on her hip as she spoke. Her attention cut to her siblings. Mike had just poured syrup onto Nancy eggs.
“What the hell, Mike?!”
“Hey! Language!” Ted scolded.
As the two continued their bickering, Doc only dove into her breakfast further. This was uncharacteristic of her, for she and Mike always tag-teamed on bothering Nancy during breakfast and making her miserable just before school. But now, Mike felt as if he were doing all of the work. He turned to his sister with a frown. “Hey. What’s wrong? You’re not getting in on this?” He grinned just before Nancy kicked him in the shin, eliciting a hiss from him.
Doc looked up at her brother, acting as if she had just seen him for the first time that morning. “Oh. Oh. So, now you wanna include me in something?”
“Come on, Doc, don’t be like that. Look, I’m sorry, okay? You can be in the AV Club,” He offered a smile. “You can even make shirts for us.”
It took a few seconds, but Doc couldn’t help the small smile she cracked. She did like the sound of that. When Karen hung up the phone, she turned to her tween kids. “Will didn’t sleep over last night, did he?”
Mike and Doc exchanged a look and shook their heads. “We watched him leave. Why? Can Mrs Byers not find him?” Doc set her fork down. Karen placed Holly in her highchair and shook her head.
“Joyce thinks he might have just left for school early. Just… make sure to check, okay?”
The two slowly nodded. After breakfast, they grabbed their bags and headed to their modes of transportation. As Mike went to retrieve his bike, Doc laced up her roller skates. They were nothing special, just her favorite color with tan laces, gifted to her on Christmas a couple years prior. She wore them with pride all throughout school despite her teachers’ threats to take them and keep them in the front office until her mother picked them up. When those days did occur, she always had an emergency pair of shoes waiting for her in her locker. Thankfully, those days were rare.
The Wheeler siblings met in the middle of the driveway, Mike now mounted upon his bike. Doc adjusted the straps of her bag and slowly glided towards the street. She carefully watched her brother, who seemed unsuspecting. “Hey, Mike?”
“Yeah?” He noticed that she was trying to hide a smirk. “What?”
“I’ll race you to the end of the street.”
“You’re on!” He grinned. “On your mark, get set, go!”
Biting her tongue in concentration, Doc bolted down the street, expertly moving her feet to avoid rocks and branches, all while forcing her brother to eat her dust. Coming to a stop at the end of the street, Doc grinned at Mike, who had reached her side three seconds later. “You barely beat me! It’s not fair, skating is basically walking and running!”
“Oh, yeah? I’d like to see you try.” She chuckled. Rolling his eyes, Mike continued forward.
“Whatever. Come on, we gotta meet the guys.”
Catching up with Dustin and Lucas took no time and soon, the four were off. As they casually talked, Doc would hum a song and skate between them, Lucas or Mike freaking out about almost running her over a few times. Within minutes, they reached Hawkins Middle School.
“That’s weird,” Mike hummed after the boys parked their bikes. “I don’t see him.”
“I’m telling you, his mom’s right,” Lucas followed right behind Mike and Doc as they moved forward towards the school doors. “He probably just went to class early again.”
Dustin caught up to them after parking his bike. “Yeah, he’s always paranoid Gursky’s gonna give him another pop quiz.”
“And he has every right to be,” Doc chuckled, her smile faltering a bit. “I hope that’s the case, though…”
“Step right up, ladies and gentlemen!” The voice of Troy Walsh instantly made the four freeze and then slowly turn in his direction. Beside him was James Dante, an obedient goon to Troy. “Step right up and get your tickets for the freak show. Who do you think would make more money in a freak show?”
He took a few steps forward, punching the four per insult.
“Midnight?” He punched Lucas, who reared back a bit.
“Frogface?” Mike tried to block, but ended up getting hit anyway.
“Toothless?” Dustin attempted to do the same, but got the same fate.
“Or Lost and Found?” Troy shoved Doc, nearly causing the girl to trip over her own skates. He and James cackled at this before the latter looked over the four.
It seemed Dustin was the target for the day. “I’d go with Thoothless.” James mimicked Dustin’s voice.
Dustin exhaled. “I told you a million times, my teeth are coming in. It’s called cleidocranial dysplasia!”
“‘I thold you a million thimes’!” He chuckled as Troy’s eyes zeroed on Doc.
“I don’t know, James, I’m thinking Lost and Found.”
“Oh, yeah? Why’s that?”
The two surrounded Doc as she clenched her fists, face scrunched up in a look of irritation. Mike moved past Dustin to get closer to them.
“Because she’s so easy.”
“Leave her alone! And don’t call her that!”
Troy and James snapped their heads up to Mike, grinning wolfishly. “She’s all yours, isn’t she?” They laughed before they both kicked either of her skates from under her, sending the poor girl to the ground. Doc cried out when she landed on her back. The two bullies howled with laughter and high-fived as they walked away from the group.
“Jesus, Doc, are you okay?” Dustin asked as Mike and Lucas helped her to her feet. She dusted off her pants and nodded.
“Yeah, I’m fine…”
Placing a hand on her arm, Mike guided her inside the school. “Don’t listen to them, (Y/N). You’re not a lost and found object. You’re family. Okay?”
“I know that, Mike, I just… uh,” She cleared her throat. “My back hurts, that’s all.”
-------------------------------------------------
“Remember, finish chapter 12 and answer 12.3 on the difference between an experiment and other forms of science investigation,” Mr Clarke called out to the retreating students. The four who actually appreciated the class took their time in packing up. “This will be on the test, which will cover chapters 10 through 12. It will be multiple choice with an essay section…” His voice trailed off when he realized no one had been listening to him.
Turning forward, he was met with Doc, Mike, Lucas and Dustin who eagerly stood before him. “So, did it come?” Mike grinned.
“Sorry, boys,” Mr Clarke sighed, earning looks of disappointment. “I hate to be the bearer of bad news but… It came!”
As the five made their way to the AV room, Mr Clarke turned to Doc. “Ms (Y/N) Wheeler, it’s nice to see you take an interest in our club.”
“It’s a pleasure to be a member,” She grinned before hushed whispers called out to her. Turning around, she was met with Brenda and Sheriece. “Um… Mr Clarke, I’ll be right back.”
“Of course. We’ll be right over there.” He pointed to the room the three boys were currently in, excitedly talking over each other.
With a nod, Doc turned and skated towards her friends. Brenda held her hand as soon as she was close. “(Y/N)! We were gonna go to my house after school and hang out. Wanna come?”
“Oh, uh,” Doc pointed behind her with a smile. “I’m… kinda in the AV Club now.”
“AV?” Sheriece scrunched up her nose in distaste. “You know, you don’t have to join nerdy clubs to get Will Byers to like you-”
“No, no!” She felt her cheeks burning. “No, I’ve always wanted to be in this club. It’s just… Mike never let me. And now he is.”
Brenda sighed and crossed her arms. “Next it’s gonna be that stupid board game and then we’ll never see you again.”
“Dungeons and Dragons isn’t really a board game, I think…”
“Either way, we just hope you won’t forget about us.” Sheriece raised her brows suspiciously. “Especially when you and Will start dating.”
Doc went to scold her friends when a voice called out to her, “(Y/N) Wheeler?”
The three turned to see their principal walking with two other figures.
She gulped at the sight of Chief of Police, Jim Hopper, striding towards her with a look of indifference.
