My Take on Mahito's Ending

⚠️⚠️Major jjk manga spoilers ahead⚠️⚠️

Hot take:

Mahito was given a perfect ending as a character. (Let's assume his story ends at manga ch.134)

After the release of ch.133, I saw some people complaining about Mahito's ending, and they said things like "it should be Itadori to kill him", "why Gege didn't let Itadori have his final revenge?" "Mahito's death was too rash", "Mahito's ending is meant as a sorry thing to make us feel bad for Itadori that he even failed to kill Mahito in the end".

However, Yuuji already had his final revenge on Mahito. Akutami Gege used forshadowing for this a long time ago.

In the manga, after Junpei's death, when the outraged Yuuji said "I'll kill you", Mahito laughed at him and replied, "You should say 'exorcise' instead!" But Yuuji's hatred and determination was so strong that he thought no word other than "kill" is sufficient to describe it.

Later, after the fight with Yuuji and Nanami, when Mahito made his escape through the sewer, he lay there exhausted, and said this:

"Bodies can be killed only once. However, souls can die for many times. Next time, in what ways should I kill [the soul]?"

See? These are the ultimate forshadowing of Mahito's death.

Mahito being eaten by Kenjaku is the "death" of his body, which should be called "exorcising" since he was a cursed spirit. But his soul? Yuuji has KILLED his soul.

Before I explain, you probably already get what I'm about to tell you. But to specify my point further, let's take a look at Mahito's character development arc.

Before being beaten up by Yuuji in Shibuya, he lacked fear and many traits of normal human emotions. Even when he was close to death (in the fight vs. Yuuji and Nanami), he didn't panic or despair. He tried and learned Domain Expasion instead. He had several epiphanies during fights, in times of crisis. When the situation is worse than he prepared for, he runs away laughing.

No fear. No panic. No despair. Only his ever-growing power and malice.

Until Shibuya happens. Yuuji and the crew finally beat his ass, then he tried to run away again. In one panel, Gege drew a rabbit's eye ro represent him (and a wolf eye for Yuuji), telling us that right now, Mahito is the prey. ONLY at that time, Mahito started to show expressions of extreme panic and fear. He knew that his end was truly coming closer. So he ran.

At this point, I think he's eventually being more a human than he was before. He truly grasped the concept of an ending and reckoning, and for the first time in his life, he felt fear, the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind (thank you for this, Lovecraft), and from that moment on, Mahito's soul is more complete, more than just a cursed spirit.

He was beaten. Completely. He will never think the way he used to think anymore. This time, just as Yuuji said and intended, AND just as Mahito said himself, his soul was killed.

Then, Kenjaku arrived and you know what happened next. He cried to Kenjaku on his knees, feeble and wounded, and he KNEW IT the moment he looked up at Kenjaku's eyes. Mahito, the spirit made of all humans' evil and malice, has lost the whole game to a HUMAN a hundred times more deceptive and malicious.

In that moment, he learned all the traps and deception, and the true purpose of Kenjaku finally appeared before his eyes. The curse of humanity lost to a human, his body being excorcised and absorbed to do much grander and more murderous plans than he could ever imagine. I guess Mahito realized it all in the end.
