You know what’s my favorite thing?

Roy Mustang’s stupid badass coat.

He wears it. frigging. all the time. This fucking coat survives longer than most characters in the show. Clearly it’s not part of the uniform since no one else has one. And I really don’t think Central’s that cold all the time. Which leads me to believe Mustang constantly wears this coat strictly because he thinks it makes him look cool. About to go overthrow the government but nope, wait, first gotta get the coat. Badass coat. Overthrow the Fuhrer in style.

That thing Ed did with the whole “transmute red cloth into his flamel coat so he could face the Promised Day in style”? Roy did exactly that too, but we don’t see it, and no one comments on it, because literally everyone working under Mustang has seen way too much of that stupid fucking coat.

I’m going to go through and document every instance of Mustang’s stupid badass coat because it’s pretty much more of a main character than he is

So, I had a thought. About why Roy refers to Riza as “Lieutenant” while she’s dying, never saying her name. I think it’s because calling her Riza would make him lose it completely. 

If he continues to call her Lieutenant, he’s recognizing her rank, he’s staying focused, not letting them use him. But if he calls her Riza, he’s admitting defeat. He’s admitting that he loves this woman, that they won. He’s still fighting, so she’s Lieutenant.

If he calls her Riza, he remembers her fragility, how delicate she is. How human and tiny and breakable she is. But if he calls her Lieutenant, she’s strong, she’s a soldier. She’s doing her job. Her job is to to listen to him, to follow orders. And her orders? Her orders are not to die.

By calling her Lieutenant, Roy is reminding her that she is not allowed to die. Lieutenant Hawkeye is under that oath. Riza isn’t. 

And if he calls her Riza, if he lets her become that soft, delicate, fragile woman in his mind…he’ll completely crumble. He needs her strong so that he can stay strong. So they can win.

The “Lieutenant” can’t die. She’s under orders not to die.

Day 17: Royai

I think that it is nearly impossible to not ship this pairing to the heavens if you’ve ever touched any Fullmetal Alchemist content ever. Although they remain platonic and keep their relationship professional throughout the length of the series, it was more than obvious that they had feelings for each other. Riza followed Roy in to the military in order to protect him and remained by his side even after the Ishvalan war. She was always his voice of reason and was like his other or better half. Everything that she committed her life to involved helping Roy achieve his dream and remaining by his side. 

In the same way Roy would give everything in order to protect her. She is undoubtedly the most important person in his life, and one of the few people he truly trusts. He is a flawed person and knows that he is, and he relies on her to make him right and make the decisions that he cannot make on his own. 

I think that Riza and Roy was my first look at a mature relationship in anime media, because while most anime relationships deal with teenagers, both Riza and Roy are adults and act like adults. They manage to keep a platonic relationship for professional relationships, and they were two very mature people understanding that they had to rely on each other to prevail. It was a relationship of equal exchange, and I will never not love them.
