Known internationally as the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz was born Ursula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso in Havana, Cuba. From an early age, Cruz was drawn to music and the Afro-Latin rhythms that filled the streets of Havana, including the popular musical styles of guaguanco and guaracha. Drawing from Cuba’s African influences, Cruz performed throughout the country, later earning international acclaim traveling with other famed artists like Josephine Baker.
In July 1960, shortly after the Cuban Revolutionary War and Fidel Castro’s rise to power, Cruz left Cuba, never to return, first taking residence in Mexico and later moving to the United States. Once there, she continued her career, becoming the first Latin-born woman to perform at Carnegie Hall. Known for her energetic performance style and eccentric outfits, Cruz earned the hearts of Latin American audiences with her signature exclamation, “Azucar!” and the hit song “Quimbara.”

We all remember hearing her shout out ¡Azúcar! but most of us don’t actually know the history behind it.
“I was having dinner at a restaurant in Miami, and when the waiter offered me coffee, he asked me if I took it with or without sugar. I said, ‘Chico, you’re Cuban. How can you even ask that? With sugar!’ And that evening during my show … I told the audience the story and they laughed. And one day, instead of telling the story, I simply walked down the stairs and shouted Azúcar!”

If you want to shut the mouths of the idiots who like this American don’t value your talent, do it with your voice. Do it singing but do it from your gut, Celia. That is your true weapon to defeat anyone who comes against you.

Monday 8:27am I woke up with you on my mind. You called me babe last night — my heart is still pounding. Tuesday 10:53pm Today I realized we won’t work. What we are is hurting her. And I think she matters more to me than you do. Wednesday 11:52pm I broke things off with you today. She barely said a word. I’ve never regretted anything more than this. Thursday 4:03pm I shouldn’t have sent that message. You shouldn’t have been so okay with receiving it. Friday 9:57pm I almost messaged you today. I didn’t. Saturday 8:49pm I’m walking around town in search of alcohol. They say that liquor numbs the pain of having a broken heart. I want to put that to the test. Sunday 2:32am I heard you texted a girl you’ve never spoken to before. I wonder if it’s because you’re trying to replace me. I can’t help but wish you weren’t. I thought I was irreplaceable.

Siento.
