What was your first impression of Alina? And how did it change?

Saints, this is a tough one, because my opinion of Alina changed very rapidly in a very short time. My first impression of her was that she was incredibly stubborn and perhaps a little naïve - and then I got to see her come into her powers and grow so much in just a few months. She became my closest friend, and I'm so thrilled to have had that.

There were some more complicated feelings bound up in that, of course, particularly during the period when I was still working alongside the Darkling. But Alina always tried to stand by me, and never once gave up on me, even when it would have been more than justified.

I think she's changed since then in some ways, but not much. She seems a lot more settled in herself than she was when we first met, which is brilliant. (She also seems more tired, but I imagine that has something to do with raising dozens of children!) I still consider her one of my best friends, and one of the most lovely people I know.

Since I can remember, my goal for Ravka was peace and unity, for otkazat'sya and Grisha alike. Long before I sat on the throne I was pulling some strings behind the visible and did what I saw fit during my short regency. And I learned that it is an endeavour much bigger than anticipated, as it doesn't only take new laws and new orders, but a change of mind in the people too and this seems hard to reach. With brave and fearless people on our side, the change is happening in slow steps, but it still comes with too many sacrifices. Today we are saying goodbye to some of our valued Grisha members, who left their lives in service of the Crown and Ravka, while helping to prevent monstrous experiments and suffering for both, Grisha and otkazat'sya. Ksenia Golubeva, Squaller, who loved making flowercrowns with the younger students and loved love. Artemy Yegorov, Heartrender, who looked grim and angry most of the time, but had a heart of gold. Yulia Makarova, Inferni, whose angel-like appearance and soft voice led people to be shocked when she made her morbid jokes to laugh about people's reactions. Vitaly Ilyin, Tidemaker, who would inhale steaming hot soup even in the hottest summer nights and insisted we don't understand how good it is. Olena Sokolova, Alkemi, who had a gift to make animals love her and was fondly called the animal whisperer in her time at the Little Palace. Yasha Lebedev, Healer, who was afraid of insects, yet always had the bravery to remove them with calm and patience, because every little life is important.

The impact they made in people's lives and during their service will be never forgotten. They made Ravka a little bit safer. May the Saints receive them on a brighter shore.
