The thing I was thinking the most while watching Conclave was actually a classmate I had in uni who is a nun. She talked about the role of women on the church and how there should be a woman pope. And like, years ago she was given a scholarship to study philosophy in Rome, except she couldn't. Because the nuns had to perform all the domestic labor for the priests and the workload was too big, add to that stuff like how no one could leave the dinner table before the archbishop and he liked to talk so sometimes he would make everyone stay until late at night and ofc the nuns had to clean up after that, or when the priests wanted to give the nuns an easy day they would decide they would have a picnic, but the nuns still had to prepare their picnic. My friend just couldn't find the time to study, so she dropped her scholarship and came back to Mexico.

And Conclave does such a good job of making this work visible, even when if only Sister Agnes speaks, there is always shots of nuns working. For everything the priests do, it's always shown how the nuns make it possible. Benítez standing out early on for being the one person to thank them. The film ending on a seemingly unrelated shot of nuns walking.

It's a very poignant statement given how reproductive labor is often invisibilized.

I love it when Conclave said oh so the church is able to break with tradition when it comes to iphones, vapes, rolling suitcases, and steel-fortified window coverings, but not when it comes to feminism, pluralism, and the nuances of sex and gender. How interesting. Anyway, here is a remarkably sad old man.

I’ve watched one episode of Rings of Power and I don’t think the show’s going to be my cup of tea.

The big tip-off is that my favorite character so far is this guy, Thondir,

“Yes, I will go on this quest with you. I will wander Middle-Earth for centuries, fight orcs, and climb the tallest mountains. 

But, also, please know that I WILL be a hater about it and complain the ENTIRE time.”

He got written out at the end of the first episode and I think the show missed a major vein of untapped comedy potential by not saddling rebellious, ultimate girlboss Galadriel with the bitchiest sidekick.

Took these off of another post in my queue because OP doesn't need my ranting in their notifications about something entirely unrelated to their post, so I'm going to rant here instead:

#i will admit that i was real torn on the elrond/durin/disa stuff in the show #on the one hand: i love whenever any of the dwarves are on screen they're awesome #and the relationship itself was utterly adorable #HOWEVER it would have been nice if celebrimbor had been the one to have the storyline centered on dwarf friendship #because that's. you know. one of his big things??? #and it would have been nice for him to have ONE nice thing in this show lmao

#(and like. sure it's nice that they put narvi into the show. but then they didn't DO anything with narv? he was just THERE?) #(yeah yeah they built the door but like. as an obligatory afterthought.) #this happened in canon so i guess we have to show it! ugh.)

#anyway celebrimbor could have had more than one dwarf friend! he could have done that WHOLE PLOTLINE okay just sub him right in! #honestly celebrimbor having multiple dwarf friends would have been THE BEST #and hey add that to his motifvation for making the seven! #he has dwarf buddies! he totally trusts them and wants to repay them for their help with the mithril! #he wants them to be able to live long lives like the elves do! #HE WANTS HIS FRIENDS NOT TO DIE!!!!

#so he made them rings. that doomed them. #just like the silmarils did his family. yikes.

#AND it would have still allowed for the whole ''the elves need our help eregion is under attack'' thing to happen #in durin's plotline #it just would have been so TRAGIC afterwards to realize that they came too late to save celebrimbor!

#(and honestly elrond being bffs with the dwarves never really made sense because...what happens between now and lotr then?) #(like yeah sure he isn't ANTI-dwarf or anything; and the dwarves seek him for counsel and all. but they clearly aren't CLOSE.) #(and sure okay that's maybe just because thousands of years have passed and all the dwarves he was friends with have died fine.)

#(it's still just irritating. celebrimbor should have been the one with adorable dwarf friends dammit!) #ANYWAY don't mean to rant on an unrelated post haha sorry OP!
