I remember reading that fic too, but then I looked it up again some time later and it had disappeared (I looked again now and I still didn’t find it). There’s a part of maybe i’m waking up that fits exactly that description, even if that’s not the main plot of the fic. It’s a good read, though. Sorry! - A

Summary: The sales pitch is irrelevant: this moment right here, sitting in the front of Kent’s piece of shit pickup truck, listening to “Party in the USA” on the radio at top volume -- that’s all the convincing Jack ever needed.

Or: Kent and Jack, a carnival, and the last gasp of the 34 days.

Commentary: I’m... sad. That’s the word I have to describe it. It’s not exactly angst I’d say (even though I’m going to tag it as such for archive purposes and because it’s the most apropiate category we have), it’s not wallowing... but we have a happy setting (a carnival) in contrast with a Jack constantly wanting to reach for his pills, we have the constant reminder of the approaching draft. We know that what Jack and Parse have is going to end, and we know it’s not going to be pretty. So this was deeply sad.

However, it was beautifully written. English is failing me right now to say how I felt during the last part, when I read about the pictures in the photobooth. The last sentence made me gasp. 

So, yes, enjoyable pain. Who can say no to that?

Commentary: This rec has taken me a while to write because first I was waiting for the fic to be completed and then I was too emotional so I waited a bit. When I went to see the notes I had written while reading (I always take notes while reading for reccing purposes), they were all just keysmashing. In all caps. So I reread it ^^’

Well, the actual comment: this fic is just amazing and everything I wanted. It’s long, the plot is interesting, everybody is in character and it’s beautifully written (there are several sentences that gave me shivers). It made me cry several times, but it also made me laugh (”Jack, you sweet, small cactus”). It just has everything. And then you throw Hockey RPF in the mix and I just can die happy.

Besides, there’s probably going to be a sequel and the author is writing other fics in the universe. Seriously, what else can I ask for?

He wants to keep his head down and keep moving forward, keep playing and getting better and power through this year or few years or however long it will be, and move past it.Life seems to have other plans, as life does.

Or: The one where Jack and Shitty hook up.

Commentary: I opened this fic to read (any long-ish fic in this fandom is bound to call my attention) but then lots of hockey rpf happened and I forgot about it. Then the other day a friend sent me a link to it saying I had to read it, and I’m really glad she did, because I enjoyed this a lot.

It is also perfectly balanced: it’s not angsty, it just has the normal sadness you can expect from being in Jack’s head; but it’s not cracky either it has has some really fun moments (Johnson has a few cameos, and I’ll always remember Shitty shouting “Don’t invalidate my bisexuality! Say the B word!”).

I also liked how the story is structured, as if small flashbacks or episodes. Certainly a really good read :)

Commentary: I hadn’t read this before because it was unfinished, but the plot called me and today I finally gave in. This is a series, but this rec is for the first part, which is unfinished, but the chapters stand alone, so no worries about cliffhangers :)

This fic is a great mix of cuteness and humour. Of course, Jack and BItty are adorable as a couple, but they are also cute separately (Jack made me sigh dreamily a lot here, for some reason. Also, of course he changes into French during sex <3). Besides, Shitty’s characterisation is really well done. He’s great in here. I’m really looking forward to reading the second part of the series (even if it sounds angstier) or any other short chapter for this first part :)

Summary: It starts out looking like a check. Jack goes down and Bitty’s heart leaps but he has to remind himself that this is the nature of hockey and this is what he signed up for. Jack is going to get knocked down. He’s always fine afterwards, even if there is a bruise or two. But this time there’s enough blood for them to have to stop play, Jack’s helmet is across the rink, and Jack isn’t getting up so they’re having to carry him off the ice. He’s still bleeding.

They’re not even saying what happened to him.

Commentary: angst, angst, angst, but with a nice ending. It has some things I like a lot: the relationship between Jack and Bob, seeing Jack’s teammates, and the fact that they care about him, that he’s not alone in the team. And they tell some adorable stories about Jack’s life in the NHL *.* Parse is also interesting here. And let me give you the best sentence ever: “That’s probably also a hockey thing, being so touched by peanut butter.”

Commentary: As the summary says, this is a copilation of short fics, with word prompts and "things you said" prompts. It has a bit of everything: fluff, humour (their bickering is so sweet and fun), romance... It’s heavy on dialogue, but it all flows well,  and most of the ficlets made me smile like crazy <3 All were nice, but especially the last group (chapter three) were just beautiful. 

Oh, and I interpret it as happening in the future, but some could be happening during canon too.

Commentary: This was clever. I think the idea itself of writing a fic from a real magazine interview was quite original, and the way the story is told through texts, twitter, etc worked very well for me. I certainly enjoyed reading this. Oh, and I wouldn’t say some knowledge of hockey (and hockey fandom) is needed to enjoy this fic, but knowing stuff like what “kazer” is makes it more fun :)

By the way, the pairing is there in the fic, but it’s not the focus of it. As the author said, I hope that doesn’t discourage anyone, because this fic is really worth reading!

Commentary: I loved this fic. On the one hand, because it was adorable. On the other, because I think Jack’s throughts here show a part of anxiety and other disorders we don’t talk so uch about: the struggle to do normal stuff, even when you’re having a good day; feeling terrible because you know you shouldn’t worry about some things, but you can’t stop yourself; thinking you have to stop trying to do something, because you made a mistake once so you’re just not good enough. I think the author made a great job showing that.

Besides, it follows Bitty’s tweets, and that’s always fun :)
