I learned to survive.” he said with a stiff pride “I didn’t give anyone the satisfaction of seeing me getting down. Not in the orphanage, not on the street, not in this house. No one came for me and I didn’t wait for them to.”

Bachelors meeting your parents

Who do good parents? From worst to best. I assume your parents are classical-conservative boomers.

ABIGAIL, She doesn't give good wife material (according to your parents), she would be responsible? Where are those scars coming from? From fighting? Too alternative to be liked by regular parents. And worst, she won't make an effort to be liked if they are too similar to her own parents.

SHANE, my poor Shane, but I can't imagine him being, as a chaotic adult and a JojaMart worker, the type of person your parents wish for you. At first glance, they will assume you are dating him because you are rebelling against them. The only advantage is that he knows that. He knows the impression he gives, and he will make his best effort to impress them.

SAM has no serious work, acts like a child and has his piercings on his face and plays in a punk group? Why are you doing this to us, my child? He can save a little by talking about his family who, less face it, they are a good traditional family and he loves them deeply.

SEBASTIAN He looks like an emo, and his job sounds like a not-so-serious one. Programming is not a real job, you know? But he is calm, and intelligent and I think he can be really sophisticated. He at least doesn't sound like a crazy or dangerous person.

HALEY She gives that inmature and gold-digger energy that your parents don't like. It will hurt her not being like by your parents, and she will do a lot to being liked by them.

LEAH her arms are too strong and give her a masculine energy and her constant travels. But apart of that, she is actually pretty sweet and has a delicate nature.

EMILY she is sweet, but too eccectric. Your parents will question you if she is actually sane. But she is also very creative and she can gain them a little by doing something for them at hand.

ELLIOT He is elegant, intelligent, has education. This guy is a good influence. But his long hair, the fact that he lives in a cabin writing and the fact that during the meeting he looks like he is flirting with your mom, would go against him. Too ecccentric for some parents taste!

PENNY She is kind, sweet, soft spoken, and nurturing. Maybe she is a little too shy to actually opening to your parents. And better they never meet Pam, because she can give a bad impression.

ALEX the cute and popular boy who was raised by his grandparents, he understands how to do good parents. If your father is into sports it would be extremely easy to him to gain him and Evelyn taught him good manners, and he will exhibit all them.

MARU an intelligent nurse, who knows about robotics, it's cool. The only thing you parents can complain about, it's that sometimes she sounds pedantic, but apart of that, she will give a good impression.

HARVEY: This man, THIS MAN! A gentle, responsible adult who wants to give your parents grandchildren and it's a doctor with his own clinic? You know this man is the dream of any in-law! Finally your parents feel pride of you!

It's like they swapped personalities, lol.

When Julia was young, she used to be cold and rarely smiled, while Shane was really friendly and energetic as a gridball player.

But as they grew older, Shane developed depression and spiraled into a difficult life, while Julia moved to Pelican Town at 21 to escape her life in Zuzu City. Sometimes, when she became really stressed, she secretly smoked. Old habits die hard.

At first, Julia was really scared of him. But they eventually became close, and she sometimes called him "uncle." He often gave her good advice and somehow made her feel at ease. In the end, she fell in love with him.

hey girl i just read your finished fic. i really really loved it. i know you said that you’re open to constructive criticism, so i’ve got a pointer.

when writing dialogue, make sure to use contractions. (ex. I have turns into I’ve or You are turns into You’re). most native English speakers will opt to use contractions when speaking because it’s easier. in prose, contractions are not as important because it adds a narrative feel. but for dialogue, make sure to use them.

When I was drawing this, in the timeline of their friendship I think this is when they’re talking near daily and consider each other mutual friends (Shane is resisting the crush but it’s not working).

Maybe I'm biased because of my culture. But there's a difference between being a heavy drinker and an alcoholic. I'm not saying this good or healthy. Don't do that.

I suspect that Shane is the first case. He is still functional, and he manages to go to work on time, and we never see him suffering a withdrawal. For alcoholics, it's impossible to quit drinking without professional help, but we saw Shane reducing his intake by himself. And after marriage, even though he kept drinking, we never see him pass away again. An alcoholic can't never drink again. A cup is enough to get a relapse.

To me, it sounds like he has control over it.

Here is my personal headcanon: I don't think Shane has been a heavy drinker for that long. He was a varsity athlete, and alcohol affects your performance a lot. Also, we know he has been living with Marnie for a couple of months and moved in with Jas, so...for me, he is still mourning Jas's parents death when we met him. That's why he is so rude, and he is beginning to drink to cope with the pain. Shane was destined to become an alcoholic, but the farmer appeared in the right moment.

Personally, when i read the dialogue about him still drinking after marriage, and still liking beer as gifts, i see it as him seeing alcohol as something to enjoy (referring to the dialogue of how he giddily thinks out loud about what to drink that night), instead of using it as escapism like he did before

Also.. he did make an effort to control his alcohol intake, which is good enough IMO, he doesn't need to cut it off his life fully

Exactly. It's a story of success, especially because in most of his scenes, the farmer has no impact. Think about it, he opens up more to you by himself, and you can't choose any dialog in the two heart event. He will always open up to you. You can tell him that su1c1d3 is a sin or that there are tons of reasons to live, but he will always decide to live. And if you chose the wrong dialog the next day...he still decides to go to therapy and solve his life. You are a witness of his events; if he is fixed, it's by himself.

Coz he's literally just a pathetic guy who hates his life, working minimum wage job, still lives with his aunt, but people still see him as someone worthy of love 😌
