So glad you enjoyed the conversation! Thanks so much for the message. We’re so excited about getting to Mockingjay!
We will be talking about the 2 films separately, if only to avoid a 12hour podcast episode 😅
Glad you liked our discussion of Finnick. He such an interesting character! So crunchy.
It did occur to me that some of my questions about Snow might be answered in the prequel - honestly I don’t have very much interest simply because of the grimness of setting a story at the START of this dystopia rather than the end… so likely we will not be going into that one.
Thanks again so much for getting in touch! These conversations have been so much fun.

Ok ALSO (and then I promise I’ll shut up and dive in to the celebratory rewatch): EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE that Black Sails only has queer subtext (and let me make it clear, it absolutely is not true) that still doesn’t invalidate it as a piece of media?? The queer characters aren’t the only reason we love this show. We love this show because it’s beautiful.
It’s heart-wrenching. It dares to ask the questions “what if your civilized society isn’t all that civilized? Who does it leave behind? Whose blood is it built on? What lengths will people go to and what will they sacrifice for even the tiniest bit of agency and freedom in a world that is actively trying to kill them? Are they justified? Can you even make that judgment call?”
It’s a story about storytelling. It has narratives within narratives and foils and tragic flaws and parallels and overarching themes that begin in the very first moments in episode one and last all the way to the end. It’s a Greek tragedy put to the screen. It’s still so hopeful somehow, even when so many things fall apart. It’s the epitome of “the love may not have been enough but it’s important that it was there.” The writing is wonderful (mostly, I have a few hangups but that’s not important here), the cinematography and score is almost reverent. People who worked on this show still gush 10 years later about how it was their masterpiece.
Those headlines of “the best show nobody watched”? There’s a reason for that. Those of us who love Black Sails love it passionately, and the complex and wonderful queerness of it is only one of the reasons.

when black sails said “having your story go unrecorded in history is violence” when it said “having your story misrecorded mistold distorted manipulated and defiled by history is violence” when it said “being defined by someone else’s story is violence” when it said “being unable to escape your own story is violence” AND when it said over and over and over again: “just because there is no story doesn’t mean there WAS no story” like enough. ive had enough. release me

I was called for Saturday Night Sunday Morning picrew duty by @heymrspatel @mybrainismelted @deedala @too-schoolforcool @juliakayyy @lingy910y @tanktopgallavich - thank you <3
This one’s very me. They have a round face option (yay!), I wore this exact outfit yesterday, when Ruth clipped my back and sides, and my fringe is currently too long. So yeah. Very accurate picrew! <3
Tagging @rutherinahobbit @faejilly @jrooc @katspace @hellofavillain @howlinchickhowl @a-chilleus @palepinkgoat @lynne-monstr @whatthebodygraspsnot @whatwouldmickeydo @energievie @thisdivorce @toughpaperround @tsuga-of-mars @thepupperino @crossmydna @creepkinginc @southsidestory @depressedstressedlemonzest and @darlingian, because I don’t like not tagging you, even if I know a picrew is the furthest thing from your mind right now 🤍🩵💙

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

all the frothing-at-the-mouth posts about how "don't you dare put a fic writer's work into chatGPT or an artist's work into stable diffusion" are. frustrating
that isn't how big models are made. it takes an absurd amount of compute power and coordination between many GPUs to re-train a model with billions of parameters. they are not dynamically crunching up anything you put into a web interface.
chances are, if you have something published on a fanfic site, or your art is on deviantart or any publicly available repository, it's already in the enormous datasets that they are using to train. and if it isn't in now, it will be in future: the increases in performance from GPT 2 to 3 to 4 were not gained through novel machine-learning architectures or anything but by ramping up the amount of data they used to train by orders of magnitude. if it can be scraped, just assume it will be. you can prevent your stuff from being used with Glaze, if you're an artist, but for the written word there's nothing you can do.
not to be cynical but the genie is already far more out of the bottle than most anti-AI people realize, i think. there is nothing you can do to stop these models from being made and getting more powerful. only the organizing power of labor has a shot at mitigating some of the effects we're all worried about
