Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose, alluding to Little Red Riding Hood, Ruby doesn’t really change all that much in Rule Of Darkness. Her semblance, Petal Burst remains about the same except for one change. Her “petals” now glow bright red and produce heat. This makes her semblance far less covert than in canon RWBY, making her even easier to spot then just noticing “rose petals and robots in a club” or however Ozpin initially said it. Her weapon, Crescent Rose gains no changes besides the fact that Ruby now uses dust bullets on multiple occasions, which aa far as I’m aware, as not been seen in canon.

I’d explain her silver eyes with what’s changed and what hasn’t, but let’s leave the topic of Silver Eyes in general to their own post.

Ruby is, as far as this AU goes, pansexual, though unaware of it for most of the volumes. Her sexuality may change if a canon sexuality is made known, but for now, she is AU-canonically pansexual. She comes to discover herself in later volumes, at say, early Volume 7.

Sorry she’s not super interesting or different from canon!

James Ironwood

James Ironwood, esteemed general of Atlas who takes up two seats on the council whilst also being Atlas Academy's headmaster. A jack of all trades, that man. James Ironwood; alluding to the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, James Ironwood's been named after the color, Ironwood (A3948D). As a matter of fact, in this AU, we've changed Ironwood's colour palette to fit the shade of brown that he is named after. An...admittedly poor quality image of the recolour will be at the bottom of this post (I tried).

In this AU, James' semblance, Mettle, remains the same except for one factor. Unlike in canon -- where James loses the light in his eyes upon using his semblance -- the opposite happens. James' eyes actually glow to an extent upon using his semblance. Mettle now being noticeable is actually one of the reasons James fails to have a villain arc in this AU. Many of his peers call the general out on overusing it, forcing him to snap the fuck out of it. Ozpin and Glynda were the main people who snapped him out of using his semblance and it eventually became habit to use it less and actually think properly. In Ozpin's absence Winter has actually taken up the mantle of scolding Ironwood for overusing Mettle.

In the end, James never goes mad, though he still suffers great mental drain. He's found to age-regress often, with the Ace Ops running to act as James' caregivers while Winter takes over his job during the time that he's regressed. Additionally, James never ends up fighting Winter or Cinder here. After his fight with Watts and losing his arm, he's age-regressed for the entire rest of the arc. He's not fighting anyone else, and because of this, he survives and is taken to Vacuo.

Semblances

If you haven't read the excerpt in the pinned post, or if you have and just don't understand what it means, let me expand on (aka: let me ramble about) how semblances work in this AU.

After the shattering of the sun, the leaving of the gods, and the resetting of life, humanity came to adapt their semblances to create heat and warmth, light, and/or sustain the growth and life of things around them, whether that be other people, plants, or animals.

The first two adaptations make sense, right? Without the sun, there's no heat or light, but what about the other adaptations? How do those play a part, you might wonder. Well lets not overlook the fact that, without sunlight, there's no nature. Plants won't grow. I know this is fiction, and the scientifics aren't needed here, but if Ruby's semblance is actually breaking down her body to her molecular components and more than "just speed", I can add a little realism to this. And so I have. I've decided that some semblances can force plants to grow and stay alive despite the horrid conditions of the world.

Those without semblances are generally viewed as lesser-than, as without a semblance that's adapted to Remnant's dystopia, they're seen as either useless to the greater society, or a group that needs to be sheltered by the greater society. They're viewed as though they are unable to contribute to anything, which is, of course, blatantly false. Despite the hardships, a select few without semblances have made it into huntsmen academies; namely Jaune and Mercury (albeit neither of them actually got in fairly/honestly)

The sun has been shattered. As a devastating blow with lasting consequences, semblances would come to adapt to either produce heat or light, or support life and growth. Remnant is left eternally encased in darkness with only a dim light from a dying sun to shine upon its lands. It’s up to our heroes to not only defeat Salem, but restore a new light to the world of Remnant.
