Reblogging because this random old lady made celestial phone a regular part of my vocab

years ago i was a member of the official dorothy dunnett society which was mostly facebook literate elderly fans of the lymond and niccolo book series. having grown up very involved in fandom spaces, i mistakenly treated this group like any other fandom space, rather than engaging with it like the stuffy and official literary society that it actually was. things got super awkward and i got really annoyed so i dipped and haven't been back since.

but at one point during all of this my friend lucy who has no connection to the group and has not even read lymond but just wanted to cause chaos posts on my facebook wall "lymond is gay" bc everyone and their mother would see me talking about this book series and she just wanted to be silly.

someone from the dunnett group saw the post and got very huffy, and told my friend like "i don't think that's correct" to which my friend replied "no he's hella gay, the author told me. call her up and ask her yourself." again lucy had zero context for any of this she was just being chaotic. but then in response, the huffy elder (legit a woman in her seventies) claps back with: "do you have a celestial phone?"

which is just the funniest response. obviously lucy had no idea who dorothy was or that she'd been dead for like twenty years. but just.... do you have a celestial phone??? i have never heard of a celestial phone. if i wanted to imply that someone was communicating with the dead, i'd mention a seance or a ouija board or something along those lines. never would the phrase "celestial phone" have entered my consciousness. to this day it makes me laugh so hard when i remember it.
