hi everyone!
if you're considering upgrading or renewing your carrd subscriptions, please consider using my referral link or code DPY34V1H at check out.
all commissions go to renewing and maintaining the roleplay formatter. the formatter cannot be added to a free version of carrd unfortunately so for the past few years i've been up keeping the premium membership needed for it out of my own pocket even though i don't really need it and i'm afraid i won't be able to do so for much longer due to life circumstances.
i'd like to keep it up and running for as long as people get use out of it, so if you're upgrading or renewing using my code can help at no extra cost for you :)

iβve found i need a bigger text box than the one in the spacing generator by byluna, though this was most definitely inspired by it. other sites with text editors have distracting colors and look very cluttered so i decided to do something about it ^^
this is a full sized editor, simple and minimal to avoid any distractions with a wide text box and adjustable height.
the options supported by tumblr / that you can use to format your replies are:
source: copy and paste the code for your reply
B I U S : bold, italics, underlined and strike
styles > small : make text small
format: headline 1 and headline 2, h2 is the most commonly used headline
text color: like this. find the hex code for any color you want here.
numbered / bullet points
blockquotes
image (it has to be uploaded to tumblr!)
formatter mobile friendly
important note! (legacy posts only, npf posts do not have this issues)
if your reply includes a @ mention or color text do not switch back to the rich editor, the color will be gone and the @ mention may or may not work at all.
if you want to preserve color text in your partnerβs reply, click on edit reblog and switch to the html editor without touching anything. copy the code, paste it in the rp formatter to trim, write and format your reply as usual. this post explains it in detail.
i hope this is helpful ! liking and reblogging to share is appreciated β‘ Β Β
updates logs:
sept 7, 2022: general updates + night mode toggle + 2 text box options. log here.
sept 29, 2022: created a new version hosted on carrd instead of tumblr, which provides a better mobile responsive layout but can be used on desktop as well.
feb 10, 2023: mobile and desktop versions have been merged into one. read post here.
use it here. Β

Hello!
I was wondering if you had any posts or links to posts about tumblr rp in general? Like a one stop guide to tumblr rp? I have roleplayed on a different platform for 10 years now and although I have always been interested in tumblr rp, I have avoided it because I know it is quite a bit different than what I am used to. I feel like I would be going in completely blind. I've tried to search for a guide/information but have only really come across your blog and while I have read through a lot of your posts, I was hoping for a one-stop guide to everything: how does it work, how do you get started, how do you set up stories with people, how/where do you write, do people keep all their roleplays public? What are the terms that are common in tumblr rp that new people should know. etc.
hi there!
it's worth pointing out that there are different "corners" of roleplayers on tumblr, you have people who only join groups, others run indie blogs, others only use tumblr to network and then move to rp on discord, etc. so there isn't a catch all guide that encompasses every kind of rp experience on tumblr.
that being said, i can help with some of your questions!
how does it work
as said above, it depends! more information in this post.
how do you get started
read this post
how do you set up stories with people
you message them! some people will post starter calls or reblog sentence starters where the plot is stated.
how/where do you write
indie roleplayers usually write on tumblr! having a blog where you can tag posts is a great way to have a neat archive of your writing. but some people prefer to write in private places like discord.
do people keep all their roleplays public?
not everyone, nor all the time. some people may have a public rp blog but only write nsfw in private, for example.
what are the terms that are common in tumblr rp
again, this will depend on the rp sphere. i have seen terms used in 1x1, groups, kpop rps, etc that i have no idea what they mean because i don't write or interact with them. generally, though, the terms are self explanatory. ooc = out of character, ic = in character, muse = your character, oc = original character, so on and so forth. every other term i can think of are more tumblr adjacent than rp related (things like mutuals, soft blocking, vague posting, yaddayadda)

hello! i've been itching to get into roleplaying on tumblr, but as someone who prefers writing on mobile, there are a few minor roadblocks that i'm wondering if you know any workarounds for!
firstly, do you know of any easy way to manage multiple logins while on mobile? sideblogs seem to be rather frowned upon in the roleplay community because of how they can limit interaction, but swapping between different accounts while on mobile seems... very tedious.
secondly, is there any way to access html formatting on mobile? if not through the app, maybe a mobile browser that doesn't just force you back into the app when you access the site through it?
thank you so much for all you do! π
hi there!
i used to write and heavy format my replies a lot from my phone so i got you covered!
this will be increasingly harder the more accounts you're handling, but in general all you need is firefox!
this guide still works but it's worth pointing out is that the regular firefox browser now supports extensions as well so you don't need to install the beta or nightly versions and installing xkit is easier as you can just click on the extension settings and look up + install xkit rewritten from there:
having regular firefox + beta + nightly installed at once = 3 accounts logged in.
you can use private/incognito mode to login to more (but as i said, the more accounts you have, the harder it is to handle)
other than that, i still recommend using my rp formatter (or other wysiwyg editor) to format things and just copy-paste the code into the post you're editing on tumblr.

Hello! Question: how to search for role-playing games in order to then go to discord? I myself am in a different fandom (I donβt want to say which one, because they donβt really like me for it.) and therefore I donβt speak English well. :(
my guess would be browsing through the "discord rp" tag in order to find people interested in writing over there, but i don't part take in discord rp outside of writing with close friends so if there's any particular way people go about it i wouldn't know i'm afraid!

hi! been looking for blogs to ask for help abt this and yours seem like the perfect one π₯Ί i've been roleplaying on twitter for years, and after months of thinking about it, i took the fact that the verse i'm currently fixated on is dead as the last straw to move here in tumblr.
do you have any tips? specifically about how interactions work here and how to set up an account. also, how do the tags work? thank you so much in advance!
hi! i understand the whiplash from how different the platforms work, i've dabbled in twitter rp in the past (many years ago rip) and i've always come back to tumblr.
it's worth pointing out that even within the tumblr rpc there are different corners so some terms (see last post) and the way things are done can vary.
i've always been part of the indie + fandom based side of the rpc, so i'm not sure how rp groups or 1x1 blogs work for instance.
in general interactions can come out of plotting (through dms) and memes. if someone reblogs ask memes that's an invitation to send some, if they post a starter call or a plotting call that is also an invitation to interact. otherwise you can drop someone a dm letting them know you're interested in writing with them.
as for setting up blogs, i have a post about it that you can find here.
i also have a post explaining tags here.

what does "doubling" mean in the RPC? sorry for the dumb question, just a newbie here
this isn't a term used in the corners of the rpc i've been part of so i'm not sure what it could mean. posting this so people can comment and help!

can you help me understand some words used in tumblr rp? they would be: literate, semi literate and novella. thank you in advance!!
absolutely!
literate (+semi literate): this is a term that is widely misused.
being literate means you know how to read and write. if you're engaging in reading and writing in any way you are in fact literate.
when people in the rp world say "literate" they really mean descriptive or literary. meaning they write replies like this:
the man stood up from his seat in excitement and greeted, "hello!"
the "non literate" (again, misused word) would be:
*stands up from his seat* hello!!!!!
tl:dr: literate means not using asterisks
the meaning of semi-literate will vary depending on who you ask, generally it means the person doesn't do asterisks but is otherwise chill about writing (as opposed to people who write in very flowery purple prose)
novella: long replies, basically. they prefer every reply to have a few paragraphs.

Hello! For the rp formatter, is there anyway to save custom hex codes? Whenever I click out of the program and open it later theyre all completely gone
i don't believe this is a feature available in the service i use for the wysiwyg editor, i'm sorry!
i have mentioned this a few times but i highly recommend keeping a post in your drafts with things like the hex code you use for your posts so later on you only have to copy paste it!
i keep a list of relevant tags on my drafted post as well, here's an example of what that would look like:

RPC self-care
We all get worn down by life and often we turn to RP for rejuvenation. But more than once I've seen people on here that find themselves burnt out on the RP community itself. With nearly 20 years of role playing under my belt, I thought I'd share some of my favourite self-care tricks.
Block people. You don't have to explain yourself and 'weird vibes' is a legitimate reason. You deserve to feel safe and unbothered in your hobby space, and RP is based on consent. Just like with any recreational activity, you can withdraw your consent at any time and no is a complete sentence.
Turn off anon. This prevents anonymous harassment and gives you great insight into who to block or report if you get non-anonymous harassment.
Drop threads. I know RP etiquette suggests you need to tell your RP partner when and why, and sure, if they ask politely you can give it a go - just know that a pre-written variant of 'not feeling it' is good enough. In my humble opinion, I think dropping boring or vexing threads is everyone's prerogative and doesn't require explanation. Again, no is a complete sentence.
Talk it out. If you like the thread but things took a turn you didn't like, it's time to bring the RP into the workshop. Something like 'Hey I really like our RP so far but I'm losing my spark, can we talk about course correcting where the plot is going?'
Make clear rules and revise them frequently. I'd also advise against spending said rules excusing or explaining why you don't like or want a certain thing - I cannot stress enough how your preferences are not up for debate.
Get comfy chasing. A lot of RP is about inviting others to play over and over and over. Rejection is a part of it. See if you can't find some element of self-care in it - taking rejection well is a great skill to practice in such a low stake environment.
Notice and celebrate the good stuff, instead of digging holes about the bad. Tell your co-players how great they are. Marvel at all the hard work you put into your muses and graphics. Admire your own blog.
Stop. Take a break. Check in with yourself. Do you actually need to face something in IRL? Do you need to rest? A snickers? A walk? Don't bother with posts Γ‘ la 'offline for the day' - leave your options open to reduce guilt or shame if you want to poke your head back in.
Happy writing. πΏ

Why Firefox?
Firefox isn't trying to take away my ad blocking software, forcing me to wade through advertisements to traverse the web. I rarely have to stop and put up with ads in my day to day browsing experience. Google has made it very clear that they don't want you to have that power.
I'm very used to a specific UI in my browser, and I'm able to tweak Firefox to my needs. I don't use tabs when I'm at home, and being able to eliminate the tab bar can totally be done with Firefox (I won't elaborate on that here). However, there are many other things I can add to Firefox to improve my experience!
You know how sometimes you want to download an image on a webpage, but you can't right click on it, or it's hidden behind another element? I've got a Firefox tool for that called Right-click boroscope.
Don't want scripts to load in on a page, and cause havoc? Firefox has me covered again with NoScript.
I want to immediately reverse image search something I find regurgitated here on tumblr, in search of the original? There's a TinEye extension for Firefox to do that and save time.
For using tumblr more efficiently, there's XKit Rewritten. In Firefox.
Sick of Youtube's shitty search suggestions, and shorts being pushed? There's a Youtube Search Fixer add-on for Firefox for that.
I've also got the Wayback Machine integrated into Firefox.
The thing is, whatever reasons I enumerate to use Firefox, there are another hundred good reasons that other folks can add to this list no problem.
In some ways, it sucks that I should have to make so many modifications to my web browser to make it suitable for taking control within the modern webscape, but it also says alot that I have the freedom to make those modifications to my browser should I so choose. At work I'm forced to use chrome, and even though I'm only browsing ad-free internal corporate pages to get my job done, I still can't stand that experience.
We should be free to control our web browsing experiences. If a company finds a mantra like "don't be evil" too restrictive, maybe I don't want to help perpetuate their advertising machine (and don't think for a second that chrome isn't part of said machine). The web is supposed to be this free and open place, and it sure as hell isn't helped by browser monoculture. I really don't like the idea of supporting a monopolistic browsing experience that is the sea of chrome clones. Everything else seems to have turned into another chrome.
Fuck that noise.
So I will continue to use Firefox.

Hiii what should be my first post? ππ I'm stuck on that
on an indie rp blog? can be a promo, a pinned post with your info, literally just an ooc post saying "hi im starting a new blog". as long as you have all your pages up people will figure you're a new blog

hi I'm having a hard time finding out what are the important tags to place in my rp blog at least basic ones because I can't come up with anything really
tags are just an organization tool, the actual organization structure is highly personal though! some people tag in character posts vs ooc posts, some people only tag ooc posts.
generally i recommend tagging anything you think you'll want to look up in the future by type. it also helps if you make a list in your drafts so you have a detailed list of what tags you use.
#if anyone has tips feel free to pitch in#but don't overthink tags! they don't need to be fancy or complicated just useful#inbox

Heya--I'd seen your post about using profile switcher on Firefox, & as someone who had multiple single-muse blogs there's a better option than profile switcher: Firefox Multi-Account Containers. It's developed directly by Firefox and lets you have multiple logins in different tabs, so you can just have a tab open for each blog separately, and have them colour-coded to know which one it is. Figured I'd let you know so you can pass the word on!

so like iβm 17 and like iβve been trying to get into tumblr rping, and nothing says that the indie rp tumblr is explicitly 18+/21+ but itβs really beginning to feel that, and like i understand, like if just donβt want to deal with minors then do that, thatβs your boundaries, iβll respect that,
but iβll be honest, at the same time, itβs like iβm genuinely considering lying about my age by like 1 year, because every blogs dni says minors dni, and iβm tired of it, like i sound really bitchy right now, and admittedly iβm being pretty bitchy right now, but like i rp on discord because itβs the only space i have to rp, and i do feel like i would prefer tumblr a lot more, like god i donβt know!
do not lie about your age, ever. you can get people in legal trouble just for talking to you even if there's no sexual content whatsoever. people have been put on sex offender lists for befriending minors that lie about their age.
honestly just wait until you're 18 to join tumblr rp, i know waiting feels forever when you're a teenager but it's really not that long. you have at most 1 year left until then.
also consider most of tumblr rp are adults. i'm 30, all the people i write with and i'm mutuals with are about my same age. do you really want to write a bunch of 30 year olds? wouldn't you prefer to write with people your age? in a few years when you're older the age difference won't matter as much but right now you gain nothing from trying to be in adult spaces and would actively risk people getting in legal trouble by lying.
