A Shadow is also a reflection of Light too, makes sense given how he's living as a reflection of the "light of his life" that Maria was.
Shadow's name being Shadow can just be passed off as some edgy thing for the fandom, but consider:
Experiments aren't usually given names, but after Shadow follows Maria around the ARK enough times to become a common occurrence, he becomes "Maria's Shadow."
It is enough that Gerald officially names the project, Project Shadow and the hedgehog is known as such.

Your prediction came true!
|| 🍍• If Sonic 3 coming out later this year does embrace a Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic X take on Shadow’s Arc…
…I think he’ll be the one to try and get through to Shadow:
Tumblr media
Why?
Because of: Longclaw
Tumblr media
The one being who scarified themselves to ensure the other could survive and/or fulfill their future purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one being who scarified themselves to ensure the other could survive and/or fulfill their future purpose.
The similarities are uncanny, and - as much as I feel exploring the comparability between this all would be amazing - I’m hesitant to suggest that this was always the plan to complete a trilogy. It might not be. But I’m sus.
In this universe, we’re presented with a Sonic character who can - to some degree - directly relate to being ripped away from that one person in his life who was all he’d ever supposedly known, trusted, and cared for. If Movieverse Shadow follows close to other iterations and arcs of the character, the same trauma can naturally be said for him. And I feel that would lead to a very interesting set-up if done right. And Shadow isn’t made into some prick edgelord
Cue the: “How could you possibly know what loss feels like?” spiel mid-scuffle and Sonic snaps.
“Because I lost everything, too. I made a mistake, and…everything went wrong because of me…”
“Her name was Longclaw, and she protected me so I could get here. To safety. I put people in danger. I put her in danger because I wasn’t responsible. And now she’s gone.”
“I miss her everyday. Sometimes I wonder if things had been different…if I…”
“Look, I can be angry and upset about what I did; what happened, I still kinda’ am, but revenge isn’t going to bring Longclaw back.”
Sonic lost a great deal when he left Longclaw behind; his carer, his home, his everything. But throughout the Movieverse, he’s come to gain something just as beautiful - a caring family and amazing friends.
We also begin to journey alongside Sonic as he starts to get used to the idea of being responsible in Sonic 2 and concluding he still wanted to ‘be a kid’. And what could be more of a perfect act of responsibility and ‘growing up’ than directly showing another the power of being a just hero and supporting someone who’s pain he can understand.
Idek…just a few wee thoughts… :)

On your speculation for the next film, I agree and I think the choice to have Sonic do what he did at the end will make things more amicable in the future.
Sonic Movie 3 Sonic and Shadow dynamic conversation… spoilers ahead!
So I think a lot of us can agree the dynamic between Sonic and Shadow in this movie was great. Of course there was the discourse at first, Shadow being frustrated at first was understandable, same thing with Sonic when Tom was hurt. And then they came to a mutual respect on the moon. After the moon scene we even see them be playful with each other. “Don’t tell me you’ve got a catchphrase.” And “Just try to keep up” with a smile on Shadow’s face. It reminds you of what Sonic and Shadow used to have back in the day, a mutually respectful feeling towards each other and a fun rivalry where both loved the banter and competition.
My question is what are they doing to do to Sonic and Shadow’s relationship after this? We know Shadow is alive and they will inevitably meet again. In the games, the next time Shadow and Sonic see each other again after SA2, they still held that same wonderful dynamic. But with Sega’s current depiction of their relationship, I worry. Now-a-days, Shadow pretends to barely tolerate Sonic, dislikes working with him, while Sonic commonly teases him and seems to be the only one who enjoys the banter.
With how things in the movie ended off, Sonic and Shadow happily fighting alongside each other in an almost playful way; spinning around each other, bantering, smiling… I can’t imagine them going back to “the more you talk, the harder I want to hit you.” Even though that’s kinda how Shadow and Sonic’s video game relationship seems to be now.
If my theory is correct that Shadow shows up halfway through, possibly towards the end of Sonic 4 to help fight Metal (probably either Neo or Overlord at that point), I really hope they keep their demeanor towards each other positive. Sure, Shadow can be more serious, as usual, but please please Sega don’t make Shadow act like he’s frustrated to be working with Sonic.

Something I noticed with shadow in the movie is that he has litteraly never experienced love before Maria AND after. Maria was the first love he ever felt, even then he was taken back by it at first. She was the first one to not treat him like a creature, a experiment, she loved her little brother, and he had to get used to it, he was scared of being loved , he feared he was a monster that couldn’t be loved without hurting everyone around him. and when he found out what being loved felt like, he never wanted to know what he would have to do without it. Until he HAD to, and he didn’t have a choice. And after spending 50 years forgetting that love exists after it’s gone, he was once again taken back by any attempt of kindness. He believed it just didn’t exist anymore,
until Sonic talked to him on the moon, and he talked to him as well. He was taken back by Sonic’s restraint and mercy, Sonic talked to him, shared his own pain and loss, and shadow was almost thrown off by this kind of compassion, he forgot what it felt like to liked and cared about, but Sonic reminded him of that, reaching out to his enemy ,
and I just really fucking love how after 50 fucking years of forgetting what being loved and cared about felt like, the moment he is shown that he’s not alone, that he deserves mercy and compassion, that he deserves to heal and change for the better, he chooses to let it be shown, he chooses to fight side by side Sonic, chooses to be a flirty funny cool little shit, chooses to make the right decision.. one scene with the guy he was trying to kill, and who just manhandled him by the tit to the moon, and he feels that spark of love ignite in his broken little heart.

Jeff Fowler, you did god's work here. You know that meme that's been going around:
"Wanna see me present an awesome Super Sonic and Super Shadow Battle?"
"Wanna see me do it again?"
That was Jeff. The oner nature of it, the excellent effects, the movements of the characters, the way it's visually busy yet still coherent, even Sonic and Shadow's little exchange and them working in sync despite all that happened, it's stunning. Oh and that pose at the end recreating the one from SA2, just great.
totally in love with movie sonadow because this is the most I've ever seen Shadow gladly help Sonic wreck shit

Shows you right there that Sonic's got a bigger heart than most.
Sonic didn't know that Tom was going to survive when he forgave Shadow. Tom was still fighting for his life but Sonic wanted to do the right thing and show Shadow that he still has a chance to do the right thing too 😭😭😭

Little details like that show the effort that went into his depiction in this movie, even the way he moves has an added meaning even if it's unintended. I hope future Sonic projects can have this level of care too.
!!Small Sonic 3 Spoiler!! (Pls watch the movie it's really good)
You guys think the reason why Shadow 'skates' when moving fast is because Maria used her roller skates around the lab?
I know that the reason is probably because it's much more easier for him to move around that way in his shoes but I just think the idea of Shadow seeing Maria skating in her roller skates and him just copying her makes me really happy.

If he played that tune on the guitar in a moment of isolation, that would choke me up. It would be a good way to show him remembering the day of her death more positively. It would make for a nice coda, though I was thinking that a dream project following up the movie would show him giving her a somewhat amateur funeral as a way to gain some form of closure.
The choice to make her play that song (immediately got chills), even it it's just some strings rather than a full song, was such a clever way of making Live and Learn more than just a cool moment of Fanservice and especially having that be on the day of her death? Was a neat way to show that the ending wasn't just him being a hero, but also working through his trauma.
I love the implication in this movie that in-universe, Maria wrote Live & Learn. Imagine in the inevitable Shadow movie/show, Shadow plays the song on a guitar.
Imagine if it’s the only thing he remembers about Maria.
I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH
tbh tho since like 2020 I've had the headcanon that "Throw It All Away" was a "corruption" of one of Maria's lullabies to Shadow. Some of the lyrics seem a bit more optimistic than Shadow was supposed to be in that game ("get there, no matter how long it takes" "no one can break you no one can tear you" "throw [the darkness] away"), with the idea that the darker lyrics ("their effort will be wasted") being part of the corruption.
specifically my mind has always gone "the 'wake up's were originally 'now sleep's in the lullaby ver" and "'you have to face it again and again' was something similar to 'you get to see it again and again'"

It is but it's also a sign of him growing. Shadow was willing to die at Sonic's hand out of a combination of guilt and simply wanting to be rid of his pain. Now, he's willing to die if that's what needs to happen to save the world and undo his mistakes.
I think that adds that flash of good memories with him and Maria too, he wasn't just forcing that memory to power himself, but was also trying to make his potential last moments thinking about the good times he had rather than the bad. Makes it better that he got to live by the end, the song isn't called "Learn and Die"
SPOILERS AHEAD.
adding onto my previous post, another thing I noticed is that when Shadow is telling Eggman to buy him time to push the Eclipse Cannon away, he says (verryyyy paraphrased) "this is our last chance to do good."
Shadow was prepared to die while moving the cannon. He accepted it.
This is very dark on its own, and it's even darker when you remember that, again, this Shadow is a child.
This movie was amazing at conveying dark themes while also being lighthearted enough that kids could watch it.

*SPOILERS AHEAD!*
you know, idk if anyone's said this before but the scene where Gerald is convincing Shadow to power the Eclipse Cannon with the knowledge it will not only kill everyone on Earth but also everyone onboard the cannon gets a lot darker when you realize Shadow is a child around Sonic's age. (In movie canon Sonic is around 13/14)
Gerald is essentially coercing a child into commiting mass m*rder-s**cide. Damn.
This isn't even mentioning how Shadow WANTED super Sonic to kill him. Someone get this child hugs, hot cocoa, and therapy stat
