We are Solving the Problem with Pre-Rolled Cones
umans have long been consuming cannabis, ancient populations likely uncovered the psychoactive effects of the plant by chance after burning it. In those early days, cannabis flowers were primarily burned similar to incense, and its fumes were inhaled. In the fifteenth century, when European explorers visited the New World and observed Native Americans smoking tobacco through a pipe—the discovery changed the way people consumed cannabis (and tobacco) globally. As time went on, and cannabis became more prevalent, alternative forms of consumption were developed to thoughtfully and more efficiently enjoy the plant’s effects. joint roller machine
Eventually, cannabis became illegal in many areas of the world, and consumers were forced to consider a more discreet way to enjoy the plant. The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 (United States) had an immense impact on the way Americans consumed cannabis. Once the act was passed, cannabis smokers needed to conceal their practice or risk arrest. In this era, the spliff and joint became increasingly popular—they could easily pass for a tobacco cigarette and be discarded swiftly.
Cannabis Industry Terms
Spliff. A mixture of cannabis flower and tobacco wrapped in rolling paper.
Joint. Cannabis flower wrapped in rolling paper.
In today’s modern culture, many regions around the globe are decriminalizing and/or legalizing the consumption of cannabis. With legalization, consumers no longer legally need to disguise their cannabis usage, so why does it seem like joints are more popular than ever? Smoking‌ ‌a‌ ‌joint‌ ‌is‌ ‌perhaps‌ ‌the‌ ‌most‌ ‌recognizable‌ ‌way‌ ‌to‌ ‌enjoy‌ ‌cannabis.‌ ‌Joints‌ ‌are‌ ‌extremely‌ ‌convenient:‌ ‌easy‌ ‌to‌ ‌smoke,‌ ‌easy‌ ‌to‌ ‌pass,‌ ‌and‌ ‌easy‌ ‌to‌ ‌transport.‌ Plus, sharing a joint with friends has a ceremonial-like, iconic attribute, loved equally by both seasoned tokers and cannabis newcomers alike. Dispensaries today often give free pre-rolled joints as a gift with purchase or some other promotional incentives, which has aided in its recent fame.
what is a cannabis pre-roll?
Cannabis pre-rolls contain pre-ground cannabis flower, rolled and ready-to-go. Pre-rolls are simply cannabis joints that have been rolled ahead of time (by hand or machine) for you. Sometimes, pre-rolls contain infusions or other added cannabis products to increase their potency.
what is a cone or pre-rolled cone?
Cones are hand-rolled paper, that has been rolled ahead of time, for you to fill with ground cannabis flower. Cones are made overseas and commonly shipped to the United States in extremely inadequate containers.
Despite the cannabis joint’s history, popularity, and widespread use, pre-roll distribution is fairly new to the scene. Rolling or packing cannabis pre-rolls by hand can be tedious and involve human error. So, it came as no surprise when innovators began developing systems to more efficiently manufacture pre-rolled joints. The first machines set out to increase workflow—an employee may fill four cones per minute, while a pre-roll filling machine can fill hundreds within an hour.
Many variables were overlooked when these first automated pre-roll filling machines became available—making it difficult for the devices to deliver consistent, quality, pre-rolled cannabis joints. It’s not only the ingredients, from flower to paper, that produces an excellent joint–the construction of the joint is just as important.
Cannabis flower needs to be broken or ground into the right size pieces and packed to the correct density for an even and efficient draw. Currently, automated pre-roll cone filling machines have a reputation for delivering inconsistent and often harsh smoking experiences. But the Blackbird Rolling System is here to change that.
the problem with current pre-roll machines
Many cannabis dispensaries and retailer pre-roll products fall short of delivering an enjoyable joint smoking experience. It is common to hear about consumers who had an unpleasant experience with a pre-roll. Harshness, uneven burning, and finding a joint impossible to ignite are typical grievances.
The Blackbird is an industry-born, fully automated system designed specifically to tackle the quality and consistency issues currently plaguing commercial pre-roll production. At the heart of the machine is RollPros patent-pending TruRoll technology that creates two perfectly rolled joints every 9.5 seconds.
Along with significantly reducing manual labor, the Blackbird uses sustainably sourced bobbins of paper and filter tips, reducing raw material costs and further maximizing your profitability. Using truly raw materials, the Blackbird Rolling System is the first machine that does not require pre-made cones.
With so many variables overlooked during their initial design, it's not surprising that even with the latest upgrades and advancements available for pre-rolled cone filling machines, they still underperform. Why? It’s not only the ingredients, from flower to paper, that produces an excellent joint–the construction of the joint is just as important.

how to roll a classic joint
Sometimes there’s no better way to relax than to roll a nice, smooth joint and light up. Not only does a neatly rolled joint look good, but it also burns evenly, and should give you a hit of pleasure with every toke. If you are new to cannabis and learning the ropes or looking to up your rolling game, this step-by-step guide will show you how to roll a classic joint, along with a few tips and tricks to nailing this timeless classic. joint roller machine
supplies needed
Cannabis Flower. When starting off, think small, use standard-sized rolling papers with a half gram of cannabis.
Rolling Papers. For beginners, try hemp papers—both thin and strong, they typically burn evenly without affecting the taste of your flower.
Crutch (Optional). Since you can make a crutch out of just about anything, they are commonly DIYed—thin cardboard or business cards trimmed to size are common go-tos.
Grinder (Optional)
Poker, Pencil, or Pen (Optional)
alright, let’s get started
Have all your supplies ready? Take a deep breath, you got this.
Step 1: Prepare Your Cannabis Flower First off, you’ll want to break all those pretty fluffy nugs of yours down into a smaller, uniform size. This can be quickly accomplished with an herb grinder, but if you don’t have one, you can break your flower down by hand, with scissors, or any other preferred method.
Step 2: Create Your Crutch (Optional) To make a crutch, bend your paper into “accordion” folds at one end, then roll the remaining paper around the folds to the thickness of the joint you plan to roll.
Step 3: Fill Your Paper Place your crutch (if using) at one end of the rolling paper and then center the ground cannabis on it. Hold the crutch between your thumb and index finger to keep it in place. Once set up, you can start forming and shaping the joint with your fingers.
Step 4: Pack Once shaped, pinch the paper between your fingertips and roll it back and forth to pack the cannabis down into its classic tube shape. Be careful to pack the bud to the same width as your filter. This will help keep your smoke smooth and even.
Step 5: Roll Now you are ready to roll the joint—keep in mind this is the step that can make or break the quality of your joint. Pinch the two sides of the paper together, and roll them up and down against one another.
Step 6: Finish Once you're ready to finish the joint, fold the ungummed side of the paper over the bud, towards the gummed side. Once there, seal the paper by licking the gummed section. Finally, pack the end to help ensure an even burn. If you’re not planning on sparking up right away, close the tip with a twist.
tips and tricks
Here are a few additional tips and tricks to advance your roll.
Start with the crutch side. This will help guide the paper as it rolls around itself. Once the paper is tacked down on one end, you can work your way down the rest of the seam by tucking and sealing the joint to the end. Make use of items around the house. A pen or pencil is a great tool to compact the unfiltered end to make sure the cannabis grinds are even. You can also use a dollar bill to help, simply fold a dollar bill in half and put your ground weed in it. Roll it back and forth, slip a rolling paper behind it, roll it up, and give it a lick.

Machines Tailored to fit the experience, not the process
With the rise of small and large cone-filling and packing machines, meeting large production pre-roll demands became a reality. Cone filling machines typically fill between 50 and 500 pre-rolls at a time and are efficient, fast, and cost-effective, saving you time and reducing labor costs. But these machines also come with many drawbacks. automatic joint roller
RollPros™ Blackbird™ Rolling System is ideal for high-quality commercial cannabis pre-roll production. It maximizes pre-roll joint production while preserving the integrity of the flower’s key active ingredients—all those flavonoids, cannabinoids, and terpenes—which are located primarily in the trichomes. These chemical compounds give the plant its unique features and effects and are often destroyed during other pre-roll production processes.
RollPros optimized their Blackbird Rolling System to meet the challenges of cannabis’ physical properties while delivering consistent, reproducible, and uniform pre-rolled joints. In contrast to automated cone-filling machines like those that use vibratory force, gravity, and volumetric filling to load ground flower into pre-made cones. Blackbird delivers the same standards with an increased level of accuracy, consistency, and product integrity as leading pharmaceutical fabrication, where process repeatability and product uniformity are principal.
Blackbird makes 750 joints per hour on average—individual performance may vary based on cannabis flower, grind size, bobbin material, desired joint weight, and size. This rolling system delivers significant time savings and operational cost reduction—ensuring greater pre-roll consistency, as well as batch-to-batch reproducibility. Blackbird makes the consistency of the final product easy to validate. This tight control helps cannabis dispensaries and retailers to optimize the efficiency of each pre-roll and maximizes the caliber of every joint that emerges from its system.
Each Blackbird is hand-crafted and machine-tooled to meet the demands of this new generation of purveyors and cultivators of cannabis—from speed and efficiency to consistency and product quality. RollPros is leading the cannabis industry with an integrated suite of innovative new solutions.

10 reasons you need an automated pre-roll system
Modern automation is the power that drives innovation across many industries—from farms to retail distribution centers. In the cannabis industry, automated systems and sophisticated machinery have become increasingly available to business owners—improving performance in cannabis cultivation, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, packaging, and distribution. One tremendous advantage for today’s entrepreneurs is the fluidity that currently defines the cannabis industry. Most cannabis businesses are still growing, learning, and experimenting. Implementing automated solutions is a natural move—and also an essential requirement—in an industry where new ideas are greeted with enthusiasm more than trepidation. joint rolling machine
10 reasons you need an automated pre-roll system
The best automated pre-roll machines help increase production, allowing businesses to grow‌ and sustain. Here are the top ten reasons for automating pre-roll.
1. Labor and overhead savings. Automated pre-roll machines increase the efficiency and consistency of pre-rolled joints that staff cannot. These systems can perform the work of multiple people, streamline processes within one appliance, produce less material waste and reduce overhead costs. Further, production can continue regardless of labor shortages.
2. Faster return on investment (ROI). There are many investments pre-roll distributors can make to expand or improve business, but few have a quicker return on investment (ROI) than purchasing an automated pre-roll system. When automation solutions are centered, they lower operating costs, increase output, and reduce lead times, which quickly offset your initial investment in equipment and development costs. Automated pre-roll machines simplify ‌pre-roll production, maximizing production efficiency and capacity. The return on investment (ROI) is achieved in a matter of weeks, making them a substantial investment for cannabis operations.
3. Volume. Automated pre-roll machines are a great way to produce a large quantity of pre-rolls in little time. Whether you own a dispensary or a cannabis brand, finding a fast, efficient way to manufacture pre-rolls could be the difference between profit or loss. These machines can roll hundreds of joints in hours as opposed to paying staff to fill the same amount in days.
4. Compliance. Automated systems create fewer touch-points or opportunities for contamination. Federal and State governments could also introduce new cannabis related requirements associated with environmental impact, worker safety, seed-to-sale tracking, and transparency of business practices, and automated systems will be a valuable tool for compliance.
5. Quality. Pre-roll automation is a revolution in manufacturing quality control, allowing manufacturers to set certain bars or criteria for the pre-rolls products they manufacture.
6. Efficiency. Automation will improve efficiency and product quality, which will ultimately maximize profits for businesses.
7. Consistency. Since automated machines don’t tire, and when properly programmed, they function without error; they produce a more accurate, repeatable, and high-quality product.
8. Small Footprint. Another significant benefit of employing automation is their ability to work within confined spaces—ensuring valuable floor space isn’t wasted.
9. Scalability. Engineered to scale up with your business, many automated pre-roll solutions are completely modular, so manufacturers can continue to add components as their needs change.
10.
Growth. It’s no secret the success or failure of cannabis businesses will depend on their willingness and ability to use technologies. This industry is hitting its stride at a time of runaway technological acceleration. In the current climate, innovation is survival. Embracing automation allows early adopters an advanced familiarity with options, more time to analyze trends or issues, and set up an infrastructure capable of adding or upgrading additional automated systems in the future. Late adoption likely means playing catch-up indefinitely, with competitors who are already steps ahead. Automation is likely to remain a core technology for cannabis, and those who don’t embrace it will be left behind.
Automation promises to streamline the total system while eliminating waste and increasing efficiency at every step—from production to the supply line. These machines empower cannabis business owners with more control and consistency in repeated pre-rolled processes so they can employ flexibility and innovation elsewhere in their business model. While a reluctance to purchase expensive machines and computer systems is understandable, over time, its impact on profits will make them brilliant investments. Since automation saves time, money, and energy, it creates an enormous number of advantages. Technology will drive the cannabis industry, and automation will be ubiquitous.
