Okay - look - not to be That Guy on main but the Duffle Bag Bros definitely meant for the mind flayer possession is S3 to be a metaphor for abuse, maybe abusive fathers specifically. I KNOW EVERYONE KNOWS THAT CUZ ...duh. But it has been plaguing me for days and days now and I just gotta make a post about it. Anyway, that isn’t the point of the mind flayer, it is still mostly a fun monster show. They didn’t craft a three season narrative so they could be like “yo abusing your kid isn’t cool” but that definitely snuck in at some point. The parallels between Billy and Will make it like, blindly obviously. They have the same name, they both have shitty dads, and they both get a face-tube full of mind flayer. The big difference being that Will has Joyce to save him - from the mind flayer AND from his father- and Billy’s mom left. And in the end, all it took to save Billy was a memory - A MEMORY- of his mom because he loved her so much.

In the Sauna Test when Billy says “I did really bad things, it’s not my fault, he made me do it” ...that shit could easily apply to his dad. In that fucking Wizard Of Oz abuse tornado where El sees little Billy, the Duffers practically complete a connect-the-dots from Billy getting hit to Billy’s mom leaving to Billy hurting other kids. “It is not my fault, he made me do it.” Look...we have no way to know how Will would have turned out if he hadn’t had Joyce and Jonathan to protect him from his father (and the mind flayer) but I’d be seriously willing to wager, given what just a memory of her did for him, Billy would be hugely different if his mom had protected him.
