The Finale
04/11
So throughout the term I wrote about things I use and how I used different devices to prompt creativity. The creative devices and exercises I’ve used in the blogposts are devices that I’ve been taught at The OWI. The way I see creativity is that it’s like limb. The more you train them the better you’ll preform on prompt. The thing is with creativity you need to take regular breaks to keep the creativity flowing. With all the project I have I usually start brainstorming different ideas to prompt my creative thoughts. Then I let them simmer as long as I can but in that period I start to think of visual elements to help me build the project.
The way I go about creating is pressure driven and therefore I preform better under pressure. Which is not the best way to go about things but it works for me. The way I went about my storyboards is that I kept on pushing forward and recreating the different boards and trying new images and new techniques to create a good storyboard. ( even though it’s a foreign field to me). The portraits to me wer also a series of trail and error even though it’s a field I’ve studied before in high school. The way things are there should at least be a first attempt for one to be able to evaluate it and then change the faulty parts for it to be successful.
I might’ve lost the plot a long time ago but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved not only in Creative Development but in all my electives at the OWI. This year has been a real rollercoaster ride and I’m glad I (kinda) survived it.

Give way to your worst possible impulse.
25/10
So how about that. I’ve always been super apprehensive on working with artist makers and tend to steer away from it. This week I decided to just trust my instinct while creatin my storyboards. The whole time I was thinking I was ruining it by being super board with my markers. The results will shock you ;0
My theme for the storyboard is pimp your dinosaur and it should illustrate me with my pet dinosaur. My best attempts were knocked down but third times the charm. It’s really a rollercoaster ride when it comes to my assignments but I function best under pressure. It allows me to think of things I would never be able to think of while I’m given long periods of time. The method behind my madness is this.
My safety net is my fineliners. I’ve always loved to use them and is my go to medium when I don’t know what to work with. Even though my skills aren’t that sharp I still enjoy working with them. Which them I can create a whole new world and express myself freely letting go of my worst possible impulses like perfectionism and being precise. The way I feel when creating with the fineliners is relieved. I use this to let go and de-stress.

Don’t be frightened to display your talents
MAKING SENSE OF INKBLOTS
18/10
Everyone I talk to about being creative always tell me that it’s hard to draw or even start. A very easy and very fun way to start being creative is the use of ink or tea. You use these as devices to start or prompt you to create sense out of a mess. So get ready to have fun :)
You will need some watered down ink or very strong ink and a few fine liners. The ink/tea will be the base of the exercise. You will have to splat or pour the ink/tea onto a page. Then you should give the splats time to dry and take time to notice the shapes the splats created and try to recognize the repeating ones. Once the page is dry you can take a fineliner of any size and start to go over the shapes and keep on repeating until you feel content. The lines should then be repeated and make use of mark making of any technique. You should enjoy this part because there are no rules when it comes to creating.
Keep a constant pattern flowing through the work. It’s key to always repeat shapes and consider the balance and placement of the shapes and use of the patterns. You can basically do what ever you want really. I like doing this exercise atleast once a week because it keeps me on my toes creative wise. The exercise is also some what relaxing and can help you clear your mind before tackling a next concept.
Hope you will like this exercise as much as I do. ;)

Time to experiment and throw out all the mind clutter
11/10
Getting rid of old ways in which one can be very tough. The process of mental decluttering can be quite daunting and make you feel anxious.
Discovering new devices you can use is quite the daunting objective. Sticking to what you know is rather the safer option to op to. If you aren’t open to change you can never discover new ways on which you can express yourself the challenge may seem daunting but it’s worth it. And if you don’t like the new media then you can go back to what you know. The saying goes if you never try then you’ll never know. That is a very true saying. In fact I’ve missed opportunities with that same maindset. Thinking that learning from new experiences would harm me more than do me good. Well my mind quickly changed when I was forced to adapt o the new changing world. Now I grab every chance I get to create and express my talents in various fields and media just to gain more knowledge and understanding. I change the way I approach a concept and design with every project trying to piece the perfect recipes together to be more productive. Sometimes it works and other it fails. Through my failures I can understand what works for me and what doesn’t.
A current project I’m working on for university is very reliant on my capabilities to style text and generate images from scratch that would also relate to the content of the articles. The problem with that is layout is one of my weaker talents and I’m not too fussed about it. But this is a good opportunity for me to explore different ways to go about the task. Step by step I will piece this project together.

Why Do We Need Holes?
04/10
What a funny thing to think ? Holes create spaces for us to create. Holes form voids of endless possibilities. Holes are most definitely used in everyday life like walking into a building or letting fresh air into it. Holes are a part of life. Holes are needed to maintain order and keep the balance. Holes can be anything from a door frame to a window and even a swimming pool. The main thing is that holes create an opportunity to create. One could see it as a problem or an opportunity. It all depends on how you think about it.
The optimist would use this as an opportunity to solve a problem where the pessimist would stare into the problem. A hole is a versatile space that can be used as a storing space, a hide out, a place to store nuts and a shelter. It all depends on the context in which its been put in. Being a creative a hole can be a whole lot of things. It could be the hole in a electrical socket, it could be a hole in a tree, it could be a hole in the roof. Its all made by something like humans, animals or the natural elements.
Holes are vacant spaces made in a space. By accident or on purpose.

Be extravagant
27/09
To be extravagant is to be over the top.
For me being extravagant is to use color. I don’t often use colour because most of my projects are done in black and white. Working in colour is also very time consuming and takes a lot of focus....
So I thought.
I sat myself down and thought about it... If I prompt myself to work in color at least once a week it would become second nature to work in colour and so I started with simple sketches with similar colours. By this mini exercise I do every week I’ll be able to level up my skills in colour and become more successful in what I do in terms of working with colour. The key idea of the exercise is to start with whatever you feel comfortable with and not to over work yourself, otherwise you won’t want to practice coloring anymore.
So what are you waiting for ? Start creating with colour and be extravagant. Any medium of your choice, water colour, acrylic paints, colour pencils, artist’s markers, oil paints, pastels and you name it. Be spontaneous in the way you use colour and be expressive in the way you use your hues and shades.
What I’ve achieved through the exercise is to create and colour with ease and to not be afraid to try and be extravagant.
Some quick fall sketches I made. Super excited for Summer though.

Courage
20/09
Courage is starting a blog on social media. Putting out all your creative ventures for everyone to see.
For the prompt I decided to take it more literal and go with Courage. The above images depict sketches and doodles I made without planning in mind or any form of prepping. It takes courage to just put a pen to the paper. This took me years to do and to overcome the mind block of perfectionism. To just draw without pencil planning is a milestone (even if it’s a wonky drawing!)
Image 1
The way I go about doing this exercise is by drawing objects, by not looking at my paper and mainly focusing on the object, from observation. ( And this is all in fineliners) After that you need to try and make sense of the image and try to close the definite shapes you like. If you feel like you don’t have enough shapes to fill in, ADD more ! ;)
Once you’ve identified your shapes start looking for patterns and repeating lines. By formulating different patterns and lines you can make sense of your image by identifying your focus points.
Image 2
For this exercise you’ll need watered down ink and a paintbrush. The way you want to go about this exercise is that you want to start where ever by making a mark with your brush in ink. Then you’d want to try and fill your page however you want with what ever you want. The key focus of this exercise is to explore the different ways in which ink can be applied.
So be courageous and try something new.
Some sketches from my #sketchbook. A bit more abstract.
