I just realized something. The last conversation Tim ever had with his father was a fight, and Tim died alone in the car waiting for Aunt Emma and Paul to bring Tom back.

This reminds me of Bill and Alice. The last conversation they had in person was a fight, but over the phone at least they told each other “I love you.” The thing with Bill and Alice is that, in their relationship, Alice was the one pushing away and Bill was trying to maintain this relationship. That’s basically the exact opposite of Tim and Tom.

In their relationship, Tim wanted his dad to do things with him. Nothing specific, just spend time together. But Tom thought he needed to make up for the car crash, so he did all these things that he thought would make Tim happy without ever asking Tim. In this relationship, Tom is the one pushing away while his son is just trying to keep the relationship alive. Tom and Tim never got to make up after their fight, and their last words were “I need a new blade for my bandsaw” (Tom) and “Wow, real important.” (Tim). We do see Tom call after his son, but he doesn’t really make a move to chase him and fix things. I feel like that says a lot about Tom’s character in comparison to Bill’s.

Bill actively tries to find things his daughter will enjoy and always tries to fix their relationship. He puts in the effort to try and keep it alive and chases after her to fix things when they fight. Tom, on the other hand, let’s Tim go and cool down on his own, which makes Tim think that his dad doesn’t care. If he did, why wouldn’t he come and fix things? Because Tim takes after his mother. A kind hearted soul who needs hugs and kind words when upset, not alone time. Tom does his best, but because he doesn’t know how to deal with Tim’s needs when it comes to feelings, he pushes him away instead and strains their relationship until they fight. And that came back to bite him.

“Nope, Hidgens did not write Santa Claus Is Goin’ to High School. Hidgens would think that that’s beneath him. He only does real art, like Workin’ Boys.”

“Professor Hidgens thinks RENT is the best modern musical he’s ever seen, but he only discovered it in 2019. He’s like, ‘Oh my gosh,’ and its the newest show he’s seen […] “Hidgens has not seen any musical made after RENT.”

Jon: “On set, everyone has to call him ‘Professor Hidgens.’ I just want to call you ‘Robert.’” Robert: “And at the end of the day, I take off the wig and come out. I go, ‘Hey what did everyone get up to today?’ It’ll get really meta, I’ll stay in character, I’ll start trying to take over the film.”

“Falsettos is too recent for Professor Hidgens to like it.”

“Professor Hidgens does not dye his hair. But he does keep it very nicely cut.”

“Professor Hidgens does shave. He has an immaculate grooming routine.”

“He mentions Hamilton because he knows that is the big musical but he has not seen it or listened to it. Out of spite.”

“Hidgens wouldn’t have social media, but I’m pretty sure there’s a social media MySpace page.” And finally, I have in my notes: “Hidgens respects Cats for the riffs,” but I have no idea what it means and I can’t find the segment again to re-listen to it. :(
