Watts 1965 • Minneapolis 2020
Watts 1965 • Minneapolis 2020
With the riots raging across the country from the senseless killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, it brings back another sad story I still remember so clearly over the years.
Some family friends had sold everything back in Halifax back in the early 60’s. They had heard of the growing opportunities on the West Coast so they decided to move away to LA around 1963 to start over in a new place.…

NCAA Loses Appeal in Antitrust Lawsuit
NCAA Loses Appeal in Antitrust Lawsuit
Last week, some of you may have already seen the recent NCAA loss in court with regard to paying their student-athletes. We’ve also followed this over the years because once again, it shows the total disregard for those athletes who continue to pay a dear price for their contribution to the game, on and off the field. All while being told that it’s unethical for them to receive any compensation…

Just the Facts, Ma'am
Just the Facts, Ma’am
Our friend, Dr Bennet Omalu, just wrote a more detailed response to that nonsense hit piece from The Washington Post last month. He completely takes apart Will Hobson’s article point-by-point with facts. Something they didn’t seem to be able to present in that article.
And hmm – Something to ponder and discuss further: Is Hobson really a “journalist”? Let’s start with looking into his…

Jennifer Thibeaux: The Reality of Online Lurking
Jennifer Thibeaux: The Reality of Online Lurking
My friend, Jennifer, has also been writing about her personal encounters with an online bully/stalker. She sent this along and gave me permission to share it here.
DrJ
Robert and I have been comparing notes on our experiences with cyberstalkers over the years. These sociopaths all seem to operate the same way. Don’t believe everything you hear or read online! Especially consider your source.

R.I.P. Bernie Parrish
Sad news from last week. Retired NFL player and advocate, Bernie Parrish, passed away last Wednesday after a final battle with prostate cancer at home in Springfield, MO. Bernie played for the Cleveland Browns for 8 years (1959 – 1966) before being traded away to the Houston Oilers where he finished his career.
And an obituary from The New York Times on his remarkable career even after his…

End of the NCAA?
End of the NCAA?
And as always, isn’t it about the gambling? Without NCAA football, the underground gambling industry would lose billions in “revenue.” Many of these young athletes have been groomed since their high school days and bought-and-paid-for, even before they enter college. How about the NFL? How would they find another free recruitment platform. It’s like the entire NCAA scam is a house-of-cards that…

The Reality of Football Scholarships
The Reality of Football Scholarships
This was a comment that George Visger added to our previous post about California Governor Gavin Newsom being the first to sign a bill to require colleges to pay college football players for their key role in the NCAA. This continues today. For those of you who have never seen the demanding schedule college football players are required as part of their “scholarships,” this will be an eye-opener.…

STEP 1: College Athletes Getting Paid Now this is going to be a game changer. Kudos to California Governor Gavin Newsom for taking the first step towards paying the slaves - er, "students" - for their contributions to college athletic programs.

Le’Ron McClain: ‘F—ing help me please!!’
Retired NFL fullback, Le’Ron McClain, who played in the League for seven years (Chiefs, Ravens and Chargers) tweeted a long series of rants a week ago after years of ongoing brain issues likely related to his earlier years of playing football.
From a Sports Illustrated article Aug 26th:

The NFLPA's "Shrinking" LM-2's
The NFLPA’s “Shrinking” LM-2’s
And the NFLPA filed their 2018 LM-2 with the Dept of Labor at the end of May this year. As always, revenues continue to climb along with “expenses” and more salaries and expenses added to the bottom line. Assets climbed another $100 million+ and net assets are now well over half a billion dollars. This year’s report is a mere 440 pages long.
Thanks to some of you for noticing we hadn’t…

A Preserved Piece of Halifax History
A Preserved Piece of Halifax History
I had no idea that there was a Chinese Directory of Halifax published back in 1952! Came across the link to this gem in one of the Halifax archive pages on Facebook and the entire directory has been archived at the Halifax Public Library!
Now I’m searching for more background and how it came to be. We never heard Dad talk about this so I wonder if he was even involved with its publication. And…

Growing Up in a Traditional Chinese Family in the 50's
Growing Up in a Traditional Chinese Family in the 50’s
This piece by Ryan General on NextShark hit close to home for me.
Our Mother never followed any of our school or other activities as we were growing up but it was understandable for her; coming from our small village in Mainland China, Mom had never learned to read or write Chinese – or English – but managed to adapt to her new life in Canada over the years as best as she could.
Dad grew up in…

Mike Singletary Documentary
You guys know that outside of the retired players I’ve met over the years, I really don’t know the players or even follow much of the game. So Google is my savior! Ha!
Anyway, I came across this documentary on Mike Singletary from last year. So of course, I checked him out and ended up watching this very personal bio that included his family’s perspective on his amazing football career.…

John and Lisa Marie Riggins Launch F.A.I.R.
John and Lisa Marie Riggins Launch F.A.I.R.
John Riggins has done it all in the NFL and football: Hall of Fame, Super Bowl and MVP – spanning a long career. Recently, John and his wife, Lisa Marie, launched F.A.I.R. – Fairness for Athletes in Retirement – a new nonprofit advocating for the older retired players who made the game what it is today.
We’ve covered this over the last 10 years and things certainly haven’t really changed…
