i'm not interested in frenry just because of the homoeroticism or their flirting or even because it's funny. I am specifically focused on the idea of these two guys, specific to the level that they are both real, that these two guys could have a clash of autism languages so catastrophic it results in a real, violent clash between them. and then after that they have to learn how to be play nice with each other. because benry cannot die. he is not leaving. and gordon is too stubborn, he too is not leaving. they do not actually hate each other. they are mad at each other but they like each other. I am specifically interested in these two guys wrapped in the intricate dance of learning how the other one works. making the relationship work. and i want it to take time. i want them to make mistakes. they get messy. they slapstick each other sometimes. sometimes they're so sweet and niceys. and they are both deeply ill. and they can't get away from each other. and they're learning to make it work. and they are bad at it. but they are doing it.

the more time passes, the more convinced I am that one of my friends (or perhaps a few of them) are doing mental gymnastics that allow them to imagine me abled. I'm a full-time rollator user, but somehow this never crosses their minds when they suggest places to hang out. it comes as a surprise every time I ask about stairs or accessible bathrooms, or literally anything else that a physically disabled person may need to know about a location. anyway, it reminded me of this quote by Rosmarie Garland-Thomson:

Some of my friends, for example, have measured their regard for me by saying, “But I don’t think of you as disabled.” What they point to in such a compliment is the contradiction they find between their perception of me as a valuable, capable, loveable person and the cultural figure of the disabled person whom they take to be precisely my opposite: worthless, incapable, and unlovable. even as someone who loudly makes their presence known as a disabled person in most parts of my life (including the fact that my phd is in disability studies), people do so much work to negate disablement from their understanding of me as a person. the human mind! truly fascinating
