Face Shapes!　「顔型　・　顔形」「かおがた　・　かおかたち」

Round- 丸型 ／ 丸顔

Oval- 卵型 ／ 卵顔 ("egg-shaped")

Square- 四角型 ／ 四角顔

Rectangle / Oblong- 長方形 ／ 縦長顔

Pear- ベース型 ／ ベース顔 (I think this shape is less well-known or common in the UK, as I had to look up the name for it..! Also known as a (non-inverted) triangle)

(Inverted) Triangle- （逆）三角顔 (poss. often includes 'heart' as well)

Diamond- 菱形顔 ／ ダイヤモンド型顔 ／ ダイアモンド型顔

Small face & big face: When Japanese women are taking about pictures, it seems hat they say things like 'Ahh, her face looks so small! Mine looks big,' etc.. I found it a little confusing because I think of a 'small' face as one with small features (says short here, but the article I read when this study came out said 'small'). However if you look at the third picture, you can see that it means having a small face mostly taken up by the features (and therefore a more feminine and child-like look)!

Eye shape terms/phrases

Recently, I joined a site called 「アイコレ」(Eyecolle), dedicated to eye makeup! Here are a few terms relating to eye shape etc.~

丸目　－　まるめ　－　round eyes

切れ長　－きれなが　－　long slits

垂れ目　－たれめ　－　droopy eyes

猫目　－ねこめ　－　cat eyes

クリクリ　－　くりくり　－　big and round

パッチリ目　－ぱっちりめ　－　big and beautiful / wide open eyes

デカ目　－でかめ　－　big eyes

大目　－おおめ　－　big eyes 一重　－ひとえ　－　single eyelids / monolids

二重　－ふたえ／にじゅう　－　double eyelids / eyelids with crease

奥二重　－おくふたえ　－　partial double eyelids

"Does this sound right?"

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe this:

「言い方で合ってますか？」

means 'does this sound right/correct/natural?'

For example, someone wrote something to me in English, then said:  「英語の使い方合ってますか？」 Makes sense, right? :)

'It was nice to meet you'

When we were in Japan, I always wanted a way to express 'It was nice to meet you', something it's very common to say on parting after first meeting someone new. You can say 「あなた　に　出会えて　良かった」(anata ni deaete yokatta), but it sounds pretty formal I think~.

After asking some Japanese people, we decided that 「また合いましょう」(mata aimashou) is a good alternative!

It doesn't mean 'It was nice to meet you', but instead 'Let's meet again'.

Saying "I can't wait!" in Japanese

If you've studied or listened to Japanese before, you probably know that 「待つ」(matsu) means to wait, or have come across 「待って！」(matte!) meaning 'Wait!'

Here are a few ways to express 'I can't wait' in Japanese~

「待ち切れない」／「待ち切れません」- Machikirenai / Machikiremasen

「待ち遠しい」- Machi dooshii The second kanji is like 「とおい」! The phrase means 'to wait eagerly/impatiently for' or 'to be a long time coming'.

「待てない」／「待てません」- Matenai / Matemasen This can also refer to lack of time to wait, as well as anticipation.

「楽しみ」- Tanoshimi (can be said as 'o-tanoshimi' or 'tanoshimi ni suru/shimasu') This literally means 'I look forward to [it]'.

「我慢できない」／「我慢できません」- Gaman dekinai / Gaman dekimasen 「がまん」= patience, endurance, self control; 「できない」= can't do (negative of 'dekiru'- 'to be able to' / 'can [do]'). Often translated as 'I can't hold back [any longer]'.

You can also use 「できない」with 「待つ」if you add 「こと」!

「待つことができない」- Matsu koto ga dekinai

Grammar 文法：

さらに is an adverb, so attaches to an adjective, verb, or verbal phrase. It is usually written in hiragana alone, but also has a Kanji alternative: ‘更に’.

Meaning　意味：

Adding さらに means ‘more’, ‘even more’, ‘further’, etc. and gives a sense of ‘addition’. See the examples below for a clear demonstration.

Examples　例え：

この木は高いがあの木はさらに高い。 This tree is tall, but that tree is (even more) taller.

+ 　さらに modifies the adjective here, 高い, to mean ‘more tall’

  これでさらに困ったことになるだろう。 This will add to our troubles. (this will make things more troublesome) + さらに modifies ‘困ったことになる’ (to become troubled), to give the meaning of being even more troubled.

さらに悪いことに雨が降り始めた。

To make matters worse, it began to rain.

さらに悪いことに彼は病気になった。 To make matters worse, he fell ill.

+ さらに is also used in the phrase ‘to make matters worse’ (さらに悪いことに・・・), where さらに modifies 悪い to mean ‘more bad’.
