ISOMETRIC WATERCOLOUR RPG - final piece development [may 2022]

concept art for my final college project, i was going for an isometric RPG town and wanted to do it in digital watercolour paint.

i decided to go with clip studio paint for the final concept piece, as it has custom watercolour brushes i really liked the look of. i wanted to keep this piece simple, going for a hypothetical in-game scene with the elements of my research & experimentation coming together for something that looks unremarkable and standard for an rpg (this is what i was going for!)

i also presented my whole project within an art bible on artstation as the final outcome

i fluctuated between using procreate and clip studio paint at this point - they both have very solid options for watercolour. the style had developed to be more consistent, but i worried that the architecture didn’t quite meet what i was going for.

these were all done in procreate, with the exception of the traditional watercolour paint sketch (it didn’t go well, so i decided to just go digital). my intended environment style was “traditional japanese architecture + european landscapes”, taking huge inspiration from kakariko village in the legend of zelda: breath of the wild as well as numerous online real-life photos. a lot of the sketches here prioritized the environment over the art style, so i wouldn’t consider them very watercolour-y...

cel shading 3D project [january 2023]

this was a real doozy of a project to work on, i had another group-oriented project to manage at the same time and when i got time & motivation to work on this one i only had a couple of weeks!!! the pressure was on to design a character and model em in cel-shaded 3D, because i wanted to work on character design and modelling more to branch out my abilities a little. i went with a jet set radio / killer7-esque flat low-poly look and it turned out quite well for a first full 3d project :)

when i joined thorhighheels’ server i found that pikachu was its unofficial mascot and someone had already drawn em in a lawn chair here and by golly i wanted to draw the same scene look at ‘m go

a few bits of fanart [late 2022]

yet again testing out my character art skills, i tried my hand at a few things:

-ginger root’s sensational commemorative online internet concert with its flashy lighting and deep blue-purple hues as well as the lead singer’s absolute swagger made me wanna try a little doodle based on the set. i think it turned out *fine* but i can’t help but feel like a lot could be improved here. idk

-i wanted to doodle both characters in this scene from chainsaw man, i watched each episode as they released weekly and grew attached to both power and denji so i wanted to sketch em out based on a frame from the show.

-at last is my friend jack’s character, who we were actually drawing simultaneously and if i recall, his result was far different from mine despite the same idea. i like this one i think the character’s cute :)

DESK 3.0 [november 2022]

i wanted to update my stream layout yet again for a new style - i realised by this point that i wanted to aim for an art style that.. (gasp) .... DIDN’T rely on aliased pixels D:

i mainly wanted to see if i could pull something off with a more natural looking painted style, by this point i’d gotten used to clip studio paint and its array of tools and options so i wanted my regular background to reflect that

EGX NO NATSUYASUMI [september 2022]

my second year of game art kicked off with a project all about self-improvement, and so i got to work on practicing more environment art - mainly on procreate. (i included a couple of examples of this environment practice at the bottom)

here’s the deal though. in late september, two big inspirational events happened: 

-i went to EGX on a college-organized trip and met kareem ettouney from media molecule for a portfolio review/career advice talk. this was a huge deal for me, as i’ve been a fan of the games he’s worked on for most of my life, so the surrealism of meeting him and his wise advice gave me this unprecedented motivational power that i really still can’t get over. love that guy

-the seventh video in the actionbutton review series by tim rogers, action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi, released a few days after that (EGX was thursday, boku was the following sunday). this video was HUGE for me, as a fan of the channel already it caught my attention and had me hooked, but the subject matter of millenium kitchen’s 2000 playstation game boku no natsuyasumi was itself inspirational. seeing the different background art and intimate portrayal of a mid-70s japanese summer in crunchy PSX pixels and polygons made me wanna try to draw one of its gorgeous environment scenes myself.

and so the following thursday i produced this, all in one straight college day between 10am to 4pm, out of a pure force of passion provided to me by two titans of artistic influence. it means a lot to me, even if the outcome could be a lot better :,)

"PISS BOYZ” [september 2022]

so as it turns out, i have friends in a discord server and they ALL have animal characters (myself included) so i drew em cuz they’re cool (totally not furries (except kate in the bottom right she’s totally a furry))

LONDON TRIP DX 2022 EDITION [july 2022]

i’d actually gone to london several times this year before this trip, but this was the only one where i took photos including BIG BEN and A WENDY’S IN CAMDEN

i wasn’t just with my boyfriend this time round, my pals noah and george were also there (off camera...)

DESK 2.0 [jan 2022 + april 2022]

i got a second monitor in real life so i thought it’d be fitting to get a second monitor on-stream too! i edited the whole layout of the desk and altered the colour scheme to be more purple instead of greeny-blue (this is also reflected in the rest of the room, but the only thing that changed there was the colours)

i also made an alternate version for my april fools’ windows xp stream >:]

misc. game art college work [sept 2021 - may 2022]

i’m kinda not proud of a lot of this, most of this year was spent figuring out the research and written work side of things and the results of each project never ended up being particularly ideal, especially when half the projects involved learning new software after already getting cosy with pc tablet stuff (i had to use photoshop and procreate - i’ve gotten better with procreate but i don’t like photoshop at all lol)

it hasn’t even been too long since this first year of game art but i already feel like my art has improved loads since !!!
