Ensemble Stars Scout Translation: Eccentric Epilogue 2
AND I’M DONE!!! Thanks for sticking around for this gacha story. It was def one of my favorites (though it was a pain to translate ngl) and I hope more people appreciate these dorks.
Special thanks to @aphonicdreams for translating help and @dyinganddead for grammar proofreading!
As the impromptu party comes to an end, the older Oddballs dote on the sleeping Natsume and start to help out around the store. While they may be rather impulsive and wild in character, it’s clear all five of them share a close bond.

The name of the song translates to “A Man and Woman’s Love Game”, it’s an 80′s Japanese duet song.
please support the original release by purchasing the manga so you can have the full version of the drama tracks :)
PLEASE DON’T SHARE THIS OUTSIDE OF TUMBLR AS IT COULD GET REMOVED. I GOT THE AUDIO WHEN I PURCHASED THE MANGA.

I've noticed for both myself and others in the series that Jakurai comes across as a little too "perfect", especially considering how most, if not all characters in the HM universe have flaws. Sure, there's Drunkarai, but this seems to be mostly played for laughs. What, if any character flaws do you see this character having?
I didn’t find Jakurai very compelling at the start because, as you noted, he seemed a little too “perfect”. As far as fiction goes, characters with no room to grow don’t tend to make for very good stories, but after a good deal of poking around looking for more substance, I eventually warmed up to him more.
Various character flaws or I guess more human/realistic traits about Jakurai:
Jakurai doesn’t betray his outwards emotions much, making him a very calm character, but that’s not to say that he isn’t affected by them at all. Rather, he hides them whenever possible but loses composure whenever someone he cares about is threatened, like in Yotsutsuji’s case or with Shishikai. He’s also poor at hiding them around Ramuda, presumably due to his complicated feelings of betrayal and irritation, which can make for some pretty entertaining but otherwise uncharacteristic of Jakurai scenes, like the time he roasted Ramuda in FP/M 12.
For all his put together appearance, Jakurai frequently makes some truly bizarre decisions which can ultimately backfire on him. TDD 3 has an excellent example of this - asking for rap lessons from a complete stranger who somehow knows more than he should about Jakurai’s past and is capable of knocking out multiple trained soldiers does not strike me as well-thought out.
On the flip side, Jakurai also doesn’t step up enough in some situations where people are in danger. Jakurai lets Yotsutsuji go off and do whatever with somewhat disastrous results and doesn’t take direct action when he notices Ramuda’s distress (as compared to someone like Dice who doesn’t know what the hell is going on but goes in swinging anyway). This also persists in anime canon, as in one of the very first episodes, Jakurai figures that Ichirou has it covered and doesn’t help when Ichirou is a hostage in a terrorist attack. While Ichirou does break out successfully with the help of his siblings, I have to wonder if letting a nineteen-year-old handle a terrorist attack alone is perhaps not the best idea.
This isn’t really a character flaw, but it’s something I do find very interesting and rather subtle - Jakurai seems to be strongly aware of what other people think and what is the socially acceptable way to act... but only when other people are watching. This once again has to do with TDD Ramuda, specifically with the way Jakurai treats him in private vs in public. When there are other people around, Jakurai is frequently stern with Ramuda and lectures him on proper behavior (see - telling Ramuda not to drink directly out of a bottle, telling Ramuda to not fling himself at people in present day canon, telling Ramuda not to make fun of Samatoki, etc), and yet his attitude towards Ramuda in private can best be summed up as “ :) Fascinating!” In certain instances, Jakurai even appears to enjoy the very things he considers improper, such as Ramuda’s displays of physical affection. I suppose this can be considered hypocritical, but I mostly think of it as a very specific case of double standards.
Jakurai appears to have some trouble recognizing or understanding other people’s perspectives and can be dismissive of them as a result. A few examples that come to mind are Jakurai failing to notice Shishikai’s and Hitoya’s envy and Jakurai dismissing Yotsutsuji’s concerns about Ramuda in TDD.
I feel like I just wrote a bizarre version of a callout post.
All in all, Jakurai strikes me as a conscientious character who works very hard to cause as little harm to others as possible, which I personally find very admirable. Perfection doesn’t allow for growth or much of an exciting story, though, so I’m glad that there are little cracks in his facade. I hope that Hypmic will continue to expand on those to allow for more development of this character and the Matenrou story arc.

I never paid much attention to Jyushi but after reading the manga and seeing his reaction to when that punk guy said "We're friends, aren't we?!" kinda hit me. I feel like most people would get angry at such a line, especially after being so severely bullied, but Jyushi just kinda... looks super HURT and surprised, instead. It's like he never expected a human could be capable of such cruelty and expect him to be kind. Jyushi was exposed to such awfulness when he rly wasnt ready... too innocent
Oh yeah, this was a really powerful scene. I was going back and forth with the idea of writing it as “I thought we were friends!” since this exclamatory statement is punchier, but that gave Iyogi an accusatory tone as opposed to a desperate one. So in the end I went with the more direct translation “Aren’t we friends?”
I think it’s a shock for Juushi because of how much genuine pain Iyogi is in. Iyogi suggesting that they’re still friends after everything he’s done is really quite ridiculous on the surface level, because all Iyogi has done for the past year is make Juushi’s life a living hell. Yet that reveals quite a bit of Iyogi’s inner thought process, which is probably at this stage too undeveloped to fully empathize with Juushi and understand what he’s doing is wrong. For Iyogi, it’s all like a big game. He thinks he’s humiliating Juushi in the same and ultimately harmless way Juushi “humiliated” him at karaoke and only continues escalating because it keeps providing him with the power and attention he wants. Yet when it backfires by providing Juushi with more positive attention - again, like in the karaoke scene - he feels pressured to kick it up a notch, which is what causes Juushi’s grandmother’s death. (And note that in both instances, what causes Iyogi to lose favor isn’t any malicious actions on Juushi’s part but instead others recognizing Juushi for his talents and hard work.) To Iyogi, this feels like an equal relationship or a game, and that’s why the consequences of his actions shock him so badly. This isn’t how the game is played, so he’s asking for Juushi’s mercy so that they can return to the way things were.
I think Juushi feels horrified since he’s not felt on equal footing with Iyogi ever since Iyogi first made fun of him for carrying Amanda around. And yet, because Juushi is an empathetic young man, he feels guilt for Iyogi’s sentence. It’s not unreasonable, because Iyogi’s sentence is a very strong one, and Juushi doesn’t take pride in revenge. Hurting Iyogi back doesn’t give Juushi the closure he longs for, and so this ties back into the concept of them being friends or treating it like a game. Iyogi says that Juushi’s playing this same game of hurting one another by retaliating through legal actions, and Juushi detests that. He doesn’t want to be a participant in Iyogi’s game or to see himself in Iyogi.

Doppo: Do you ever feel like time is just an otherworldly excuse to pin your problems on? It’s the root of most of our problems. Lack of sleep? Blame your clock. Frustrated that the days won’t just end fast so you can get your paycheck? Blame it on your calendar. Sometimes I don’t know what I’m saying. I’m probably sleep deprived or it’s just that I feel like stabbing someone but—
Samatoki, looking at the camera mouthing: WHAT. THE. FUCK?
Rio: ?(´・_・`)
Jakurai, blinking: I—
Jyuto: This… this is a rap battle…
Hifumi: I have no idea what’s happening right now…
