The reason behind this blog is to show the hyper-sexualized appearance and portrayal of women in video games. This has a negative impact on today’s youth and their perception of women’s femininity. This leads to looking at women as objects instead of human beings and having unrealistic expectations of women’s bodies. Women in games also fit into the stereotype of being a prize or just a pleasure for the main male character. Some games do have women as main characters but as found in a research done by Beasley and Standley, 70% of Mature-Rated games and 46% of Teen-Rated games show women with abundant cleavage. With this said, it seems that female characters have their personality tied to their sexuality making their main feature of importance their sexual appearance. The following are examples of female characters which have had this hyper-sexualized treatment which have them wearing skin tight clothes in situations that do not require such attire and extend the stereotype of women using their bodies to manipulate and get what they want.

Bayonetta (Bayonetta Series)

Bayonetta is an Umbra witch, she is very old but still retains her youth due to her supernatural abilities. She wears a skin tight black suit throughout the game, which is made of her hair. When she attacks her foes, the suit dissipates leaving the majority of her body exposed with only strategically placed strands of hair covering her chest and crotch.

Cammy (Street Fighter Series)

Cammy is essentially an engineered clone. She was trained in the military special forces to fight and posses tremendous strength as well as a slight physic ability. She sports a green skin tight leotard and cargo boots when fighting opponents. Which in real life is very unethical and would not be worn.

Mileena (Mortal Kombat Series)

In this remake of the very popular Mortal Kombat series, Mileena is given a new, more sexual, look. Her new backstory now consists of being a clone of Kitana instead of originally being Kitana’s sister. Not only was Mileena’s new appearance more revealing, but her movement and overall actions were sexualized and promiscuous.

Chloe Frazer (Uncharted Series)

Chloe Frazer is an Australian explorer who helps the main character, Nathan Drake on occasion. As depicted in the picture above, she is a love interest of Nathan Drake and even though her body is not as “revealing” as some of the others on this blog, Chloe does have a very high sex appeal. Using her wit, charm, and sexuality to wrap any man around her finger.

Samus (Metroid Series)

Samus is an intergalactic bounty hunter who is most known for the suit she wore in the first Metroid game. Her first physical appearance without the armor suit shocked gamers, when the body underneath the suit of armor was a woman, with emphases on her body which depicted her in a bikini.

Cortana (Halo Series)

Cortana is a female computer program within the suit of the main character, Master Chief, which helps him through any mission that is assigned to him due to her extreme level of intelligence. Throughout the Halo series, her physical appearance has changed drastically which depicts her far more sexual than in previous games. As seen from left to right on the picture above is each of her appearances from Halo 1 to Halo 4.

Lara Croft (Tomb Raider Series)

From the very famous Tomb Raider game series, Lara Croft is a British archaeologist that goes on many dangerous archaeological expeditions. Her most common and well known look is her iconic tank top, short shorts, backpack, and combat boots. All complimented by her British accent and curvy physique.

EVA (Metal Gear Solid Series)

Making her first appearance in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, this seductive triple agent and lover of Big Boss as implied through various implicated sex scenes goes by many aliases such as Tatyana, Tanya, Matka Pluku, and Big Mama. Sporting her very revealing jumpsuit and black bra in combat throughout the game.

Dead or Alive Xtreme Series

Where do we even begin to explain with this entry. This game is a spin-off of the Dead or Alive fighting game. This is a game full of women in very revealing bikinis who play various minigames ranging from beach volleyball to “butt battle”. There is also a game mode when the player can take control of any girl in the game called girl mode, also the player can make them have relationships with each other. If that isn’t demeaning to women then I don’t know what is.
